The Relationships Between Grit, Mindset, And The Academic Success Of Nontraditional Students At Online Colleges, David W. Franklin Jr

Legacy Theses & Dissertations (2009 - 2024)

Grit and mindset are two of the hottest topics in education today, but research on their predictive power for academic success is inconclusive and rife with gaps and limitations. The purpose of this study is to investigate the relationships between grit, mindset, self-regulated learning (SRL), and academic outcomes for adult students attending online colleges. This was investigated using data from the Diagnostic Assessment and Achievement of College Skills (DAACS) project, and includes 9,276 undergraduate, mostly adult students from two online institutions in the United States. The results indicate that while grit, its two components, and mindset were significantly correlated with …

Implicit Sense Of Gratification : A New Lens On Academic Intrinsic Motivation, Haiyang Su

Legacy Theses & Dissertations (2009 - 2024)

The main purpose of this study was to explore the relationship among key concepts from three motivation theories— mastery and performance goal orientation from Achievement Goal Theory (AGT, Elliot & McGregor, 2001), proximal and distal goal setting from Goal Setting Theory (GST; Locke & Latham, 1990), and academic intrinsic motivation based on the Self-Determination Theory (SDT; Deci & Ryan, 1985). The study also examined moderating effects by gender and grade level difference on the relationship between proximal goal setting and academic intrinsic motivation. Implicit sense of gratification, a new concept proposed in this study, was used to test the mediation …

An Investigation Of The Relationship Between Academic Achievement And High School Students' Perceived Level Of Satisfaction Of Needs In Selected Southeast Tennessee Schools, Michael Caraccio

Masters Theses and Doctoral Dissertations

“Lack of motivation is a real and pressing problem. Upwards of 40 percent of high school students are chronically disengaged from school” (Crotty, 2013, para. 3). This problem highlights the purpose of this research, which was twofold. First, the research was designed to develop an assessment to measure students’ level of needs satisfaction using Maslow’s Hierarchy of Needs. Secondly, the assessment instrument was used to investigate the relationship between the level of satisfaction of needs and the academic achievement of high school students. The theoretical basis for this research was Maslow’s Hierarchy of Needs, which was classified as an aspect …

The central purpose of this study was to investigate the differences in test-taking motivation between large-scale high-stakes and low-stakes tests. The high-stakes test in this study was any college admission test, and the low-stakes test was the mandatory state assessment in West Virginia. Comparisons deduced the influence of the following independent variables on self-reported test-taking motivation: test stakes (high or low), future plan (college-bound or non-college bound), grade level (9 – 12), and sex (female or male).

The sample in this investigation (n=161) was taken from a West Virginia school district with a high school population of about 3,000 students. …

The Relationship Between Self-Determination, Achievement Goal Orientation And Satisfaction With The Learning Experience : Working With Adult Lifelong Learners, Jane Rodd

Legacy Theses & Dissertations (2009 - 2024)

This exploratory study investigated how self-perceptions of self-determination and of achievement goal orientation were related to self-perceptions of satisfaction with the learning experience in a population of 495 adults engaged in non-formal lifelong learning through participation as amateur members of the United States Dressage Association. Multivariate statistics were utilized to investigate the effects of self-determination (autonomy, competence and relatedness) and achievement goal orientation (mastery-approach, mastery-avoidance, performance-approach, and performance-avoidance) on self-reported satisfaction with the learning experience; the six satisfaction sub-constructs were opportunities to improve (knowledge and skill), release and diversion (from everyday life), social aspects (interaction with others), (attitudes of) people …
