Enrichment Curriculum For Third Grade Mathematically Gifted Students, Brooke Anne Mcallister Feb 2007

Enrichment Curriculum For Third Grade Mathematically Gifted Students, Brooke Anne Mcallister

All Graduate Projects

Research shows that mathematically gifted students learn differently from their same age group peers. They require curriculum to be differentiated to meet their specific learning styles (Johnson, 2006). Studies have shown that formal instruction in elementary school classrooms often lacks challenge for the gifted learner since courses in regular classrooms sometimes have a relatively narrow range of topics, minimal investigation of concepts, repeated drill and practice, and yearly repetition (Fello, 2004). This project consists of curriculum for third grade gifted math students which takes the regular classroom curriculum to a more contextual level. This unit provides inquiry-based, discovery learning approaches …

The Social Construction Of Authorship: An Investigation Of Subjectivity And Rhetorical Authority In The College Writing Classroom, Johannah Rodgers

Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects

Although we use the term author on a daily basis to refer to certain individuals, bodies of work, and systems of ideas, as Michel Foucault and other critics have pointed out, attempting to answer the question “What is an Author?” is by no means a simple proposition. And, starting from the position that there is no single, or definitive answer to this complex question, this dissertation seeks to contribute to the ongoing discussion of the genealogy of authorship by investigating the ways in which conceptions of the author have informed models of the writing subject in the field of rhetoric …

The Effect Of An Intensive Writing Instruction Assessment Preparation Program On Student Writing Proficiency, Edward J. Bennett Feb 2007

The Effect Of An Intensive Writing Instruction Assessment Preparation Program On Student Writing Proficiency, Edward J. Bennett

Student Work

An intensive writing instruction and assessment preparation program was evaluated to determine its effectiveness in helping students improve their performance on a standardized statewide writing assessment. Following the six-week program, pretest to posttest gains made by 8th-grade students ( N = 74) revealed significant improvement in writing performance on the statewide assessment. As reflected by subject test scores, the control group of 8th-grade students (N = 86) also demonstrated significant pretest to posttest gains. Although posttest statewide writing assessment scores were significant for both groups, Norm Referenced Normal Curve Equivalent posttest measures dipped significantly for both groups. However, the achievement …

One Problem, Two Contexts, Danielle L. Gigger Jan 2007

One Problem, Two Contexts, Danielle L. Gigger

Theses and Dissertations

In this study, a group of students were presented with two mathematically isomorphic problems but in radically different contexts. Analysis of their thinking and reasoning as they worked to solve and explain each problem demonstrates that the thinking and reasoning that emerged in each problem responded to clear purposes that the problems elicited in these students. The first problem was posed in a context that relied on experience and intuition rather than a formal mathematical description. The second problem was posed in a formal, set-theoretic context. While the analysis offered here reveals similarities in the students' final reasoning in the …

Is It Possible To Teach As A Christian In Today's Public School Setting?, Rachel Waggener

Honors Theses

I am a teacher. I have chosen to invest three years of my life as well as my undergraduate college experience to learn how to educate. In the Merriam-Webster Online Dictionary (2007), education is defined as "the field of study that deals mainly with methods of teaching and learning in schools." Education, particularly as it relates to public school classrooms and teachers, is often a topic on talk shows, front page newspaper articles, and political campaign speeches. It should be. It affects every family in our country and world.

Application Of Emotional Intelligence In Elementary Education Classrooms, Sabrina D. Farmer

Regis University Student Publications (comprehensive collection)

The following research project investigates the research on emotional intelligence, how it is used in the classroom, how it leads to student success, and how educators can encourage personal emotional inquiry and emotional intelligence in social and personal situations. Personalization Efforts And The Relationship To School Climate In Select Michigan High Schools, Karl A. Pilar Jan 2007

Personalization Efforts And The Relationship To School Climate In Select Michigan High Schools, Karl A. Pilar

Master's Theses and Doctoral Dissertations

The American high school is on the verge of a reform movement like that seen in American middle schools throughout the early and mid-1990s. In 1996 the National Association of Secondary School Principals (NASSP) released its recommendations for reform in the study Breaking Ranks: Changing an American Institution. Among these are recommendations that call for high schools to become smaller, less bureaucratic, and more responsive to student needs, where students feel a sense of belonging. Hoy and Miskel (2001) defined school climate as a “relatively enduring quality of the school’s environment that is experienced by participants, affects their behavior, is …
