In Being, Richard Hal Rosen Dec 1975

In Being, Richard Hal Rosen

Doctoral Dissertations

This work, In Being, is an effort to establish the validity of individual thought. Personal thought (Chapter I) is elevated to the realm of objective knowledge while the knower is free from bias and preconception and aims at universals. The detached observer in science is questioned as personal knowing makes that which is known a part of the knower. Yoga, chemicals and phenomenology are explored as means for knowing and ultimate reality. Chapter I concludes with a delineation of the creative and intuitive implications for personal knowledge.

In the personal writing section (Chapter II), signs are discussed as they …

A Study Of East Tennessee Regional Phonology: Its Influence On Reading Performance, Margaret B. Davis Dec 1975

A Study Of East Tennessee Regional Phonology: Its Influence On Reading Performance, Margaret B. Davis

Doctoral Dissertations

The purposes of this study were to analyze the pronunciation of pupils and teachers to determine the deviation from the expected pronunciation for each group, and to determine the influence of dialect on reading performance of pupils. A random selection of twenty first grade, third-generation pupils and twenty elementary, second-generation teachers from four small, rural, all-white elementary schools in Sevier County, Tennessee were interviewed with the use of an instrument which the investigator developed from an arbitrary selection of one-hundred-sixty-two pictorial words. These words were teaching examples for the eighteen vowels and diphthongs that are taught as phoneme-grapheme correspondences in …

Sex And Curriculum Differences In Conceptions Of The Teacher Role: A Role Theoretical Analysis, Steven Michael Koning Dec 1975

Sex And Curriculum Differences In Conceptions Of The Teacher Role: A Role Theoretical Analysis, Steven Michael Koning

Masters Theses

This study is concerned with factors which influence the way individuals conceptualize and define their social roles. Role theory suggests that role conceptions, which are individual orientations to a role, are affected by expectations associated with the role and personality characteristics that an individual brings to the role. These suggestions are tested by examining sex and curriculum differences in conceptions of the teacher role among education students at a midwestern university. Conceptions of teacher control and nurturance are assessed by two scales developed by the author. Results indicate that factors associated with a student's curriculum influence orientations toward teacher control …

A Comparative Study Of Campus Environments At Three Church-Related Colleges, William K. Stob Dec 1975

A Comparative Study Of Campus Environments At Three Church-Related Colleges, William K. Stob

Dissertations

The purpose of this study was to investigate, compare and contrast the perceptions and expectations of second-semester freshmen in regard to several aspects of the campus environment at three church-related liberal arts colleges in western Michigan.

The review of the literature traced the origins and the development of private church-related higher education and outlined some rationale for the continuation of pluralism in American higher education. The review further indicated that church-related higher education appears to be caught in a period of self-doubt and uncertainty. Some studies have been conducted to assess the condition of church related higher education in America …

Stability And Change In Self-Conceptions As A Function Of Perceived Consistency Of Evaluations Among Significant Others, Alan Mcevoy Dec 1975

Stability And Change In Self-Conceptions As A Function Of Perceived Consistency Of Evaluations Among Significant Others, Alan Mcevoy

Dissertations

This study represents an attempt to empirically test a theoretical model explicating the contingencies associated with stability and change in self-conceptions among highschool students. Specifically, this investigation is concerned with the cumulative and isolated impact of perceived parental, teacher, and peer expectations on student self-conceptions over time.

The basic postulate is that patterns of stability and change in self-conceptions are a function of the degree of perceived consistency in the expectations and evaluations of significant others. The data were supportive of the consistency model and suggest that some groups of significant others have a greater impact on the self-conceptualizing process …

Rain On Tuesday, A Growth Community In Southern California, Lucile Hubbell Anderson

Health, Exercise, and Sports Sciences ETDs

Growth communities have developed throughout the United States in answer to a need to relate to others in close, meaningful ways and to regain a sense of personal identity, threatened by urban life styles. This study reports the events and situations leading to the formation, development and decline of Rain on Tuesday, a growth community in Laguna Beach, California. The community was started as a leisure activity by a group of middle-aged, upper middle class people who had previously been involved in a social action project. The group eventually included over one hundred people. For nearly a year the community …

A Sociolinguistic Study Of Language Maintenance In The Northern New Mexico Community Of Arroyo Seco, Leroy I. Ortiz Oct 1975

A Sociolinguistic Study Of Language Maintenance In The Northern New Mexico Community Of Arroyo Seco, Leroy I. Ortiz

Language, Literacy, and Sociocultural Studies ETDs

Since the late 16th century, the Spanish language has been maintained in rural, northern New Mexico communities, largely through a pattern of geographic isolation. Within the past 50 years, however, communities in northern New Mexico have begun to undergo greater sociocultural change and more contact with English.

Arroyo Seco is one Spanish-speaking community in northern New Mexico that has recently experienced increased intercultural contact. The purpose of this study was to examine the existing language situation in Arroyo Seco to determine to what extent the community is maintaining Spanish, to assess the strength of English, and to isolate the factors …

The Effects Of An Innovative Curriculum On The Attitudes Of "Educationally Disadvantaged" Freshman College Students, Julius William Wilkerson Aug 1975

The Effects Of An Innovative Curriculum On The Attitudes Of "Educationally Disadvantaged" Freshman College Students, Julius William Wilkerson

Dissertations and Theses

Educational research literature suggests the expectations for success in college for youth from "educationally disadvantaged" backgrounds are tragically small. Reasons offered for this have included the lack of requisite academic preparation, lack of motivation, lack of appreciation for the value of a college education. The general purpose of this study was to investigate the effectiveness of an innovative instructional technique in promoting the development of positive attitudes about self-worth, and academic achievement, for "disadvantaged" students. Specifically, this study attempted to identify the structure of attitudes of "educationally disadvantaged" students in the Portland State University support service program (Operation PLUS) about …

Presweetened Cereal Patterns Of Older Sib Families And No Older Sib Families: Child's Preference, Mother's Perception Of Child's Preference, And Family Purchase, Doris Ellen Phillips Aug 1975

Presweetened Cereal Patterns Of Older Sib Families And No Older Sib Families: Child's Preference, Mother's Perception Of Child's Preference, And Family Purchase, Doris Ellen Phillips

Doctoral Dissertations

The child's food preferences are influenced by several variables. Some of these included his flavor perception, television commercials, sibling influence, and other family characteristics. These factors vary depending upon his place in the family and his development at any particular period in his life.

Thirty 4-to 5-year-old children and their mothers were interviewed separately to determine each of their perceptions of the child's presweetened cereal preferences. Sensory tests were used to determine the child's actual presweetened cereal preference and his physiological perception of the sweet taste and flavor. His familiarity with television commercials was explored and he was asked to …

Career Education: A Promise Of Relevancy In Education, Jimmie Nell Parker Aug 1975

Career Education: A Promise Of Relevancy In Education, Jimmie Nell Parker

Student Dissertations & Theses

That students are role-oriented while many schools are still goal-oriented has been demonstrated in this project. Many educators (Goldhammer & Heilman, 1973; Glasser, 1970; Goodlad, 1975; Hansen, 1975; Mink, 1975; and Tyler, 1972) emphasize the importance of students finding their identity and a sense of belongingness. Hoyt (1974), Marland (1971) (1972), and Goldhammer et. al. (1973) see work as an important element in helping youth find a meaningful role for himself in his community. While still in its infancy, I career education is well on its way to carving out a purpose which is critical if American education is to …

A Report Of An Internship In Gull Lake Community Schools, Gull Lake, Michigan, Gary J. Jackson

Masters Theses

The Gull Lake Community Schools, a class B school with an enrollment of 3000 students, 145 teachers, and 12 administrative staff, provided an intern experience for me from June 24, 1974 to August 14, 1974.

The intern experience was related to the role of the school superintendent. The role of the superintendent varies from district to district but generally playing the role requires a great deal of human, conceptual, and technical skills that when utilized properly result in a healthy, productive educational institution.

As a result of the internship, this intern believes that he has a very broad knowledge of …
