Perceptions Of Science And Engineering Majors' L2 Academic Writing, Erica L. Meyer Lewko

Archived Theses and Dissertations

Writing in different disciplines can be challenging for students whose second language is English. While this issue has received some attention in the literature, it has not been addressed in a Middle Eastern context. This study, carried out at an English-medium university in Egypt, was undertaken to examine the perceptions of undergraduate students majoring in science and engineering disciplines and their professors of the quality of the students’ writing. In the first part of the study, 35 undergraduates completed an online questionnaire containing both Likert scale and open-ended items about writing for classes in their major. Six student participants were …

Interpersonal Metadiscourse Categories In Two Egyptian Newspapers Concerning The 2007 "Constitutional Amendments", Ahmad Abdelmoneim

Archived Theses and Dissertations

This research-work aims at studying the use of metadiscourse markers by foreign learners of Arabic to enhance their writing skills. First there is an introduction which explains the role of metadiscourse markers in writing within the framework of the two paradigms of meaning suggested by Halliday, i.e. the textual and the interspersonal. Second two hypotheses on which the research-work is built are spelled out. The first hypothesis assumes that writers will always use the two basic paradigms of meaning suggested by Haliday as far as metadiscourse markers are concerned. The Second one postulates that foreign learners of Arabic acquire solid …

Rote Learning In The Egyptian National Education System: Possible Roots And Consequences, Deena Mahmoud Sami Douara Dec 2008

Rote Learning In The Egyptian National Education System: Possible Roots And Consequences, Deena Mahmoud Sami Douara

Archived Theses and Dissertations

It is commonly accepted that the national education system in Egypt promotes rote learning over critical or independent thinking, despite government rhetoric for reform. Close examination, however, of the underlying factors sustaining such a system are sparse. The first part of the research examines teacher priorities and constraints, testing effects, and parental expectations, as well as student attitudes towards their subjects, teachers and learning. The thesis fills a gap in the research by investigating private preparatory and secondary schools, which should represent the best of what the national system can accomplish without interference of confounding variables. The research is based …

Communication Strategies In Problem-Free Synchronous And Asynchronous Computer-Mediated Communication (Cmc): An Egyptian Efl University Context, Hanaa Abdel Rahman

Archived Theses and Dissertations

This study investigated four communication strategies in problem-free synchronous and asynchronous CMC interactions among 15 advanced Egyptian students in an EFL university context. The data yielded a statistically significant difference in the use of topic continuation and off-task discussion at higher levels than forward inferencing and hypothesis testing in synchronous CMC. Differences among some groups were also observed showing variation in communication strategy use. The results failed to support similar findings in asynchronous CMC. However, the data implied several considerations closely related to low interactivity in asynchronous CMC. The findings suggest that some communication strategies may lend themselves to a …

Development of the learning process, education reform and school effectiveness represent a very important area of study in both the developing and the developed countries. In the face of budget constraints, for many developing countries, investing in IT may be a very expensive task given the various problems related to access and equity. Raising the quality of education has been an aim for most countries in order to raise the capacity of their labor force.

This study aims at evaluating the value added to the learning process using IT as a tool in class and how it leads to development. …
