How Much Difference Can We Make? Assessing The Change In Students’ Critical Thinking In A Private Political Science Program In Egypt, Yasmin Khodary

Political Science

The purpose of this study is to determine the change in students’ levels of critical thinking (CT) through comparing the results of second- and fourth-year students. The study also investigates the factors that are statistically significant in explaining the change, if any, in students’ CT. In doing that, the study determines whether or not the use of assessment criteria that encourage CT influences or triggers any change in students’ CT. The study employs mixed methods, combining quantitative methods with qualitative ones. This paper was commissioned to inform the Review of Queensland Senior Assessment and School Reporting and Tertiary Entrance Processes undertaken by Australian Council for Educational Research (ACER). Specifically, the lead Investigator was tasked to address the hypothesis that the Queensland Studies Authority’s (QSA, also referred to as system) approach to specifying assessment criteria and standards remains dominant and salient across disciplines. Formative feedback has been well documented as a means of promoting and engaging learning. Indeed, for effective feedback the timely nature of feedback is essential. This project outlines the development of formative assessment as integral part of a blended learning programme. Using the existing BA Visual Art Programme (Sherkin Island), this project developed, used and evaluated innovative student feedback mechanisms. The project focused on the development of formative feedback for first year modules on the programme with special emphasis placed upon the written elements of the course.
