Discussion-based teaching is popular in several courses because it creates opportunities for students to practice important skills useful for the working environment. In order to make this pedagogy impactful and effective, instructors employ technologies such as online discussion forums and student response systems to conduct and manage classroom discussions. More recently mobile devices have become prevalent and researchers have been exploring how this device can help support education. In this paper we report the innovative use of mobile technology and supporting backend tools to manage classroom discussions. We have implemented a class discussion and management application, LiveClass. This application records …

An Investigation Of Engineering Design Cognition And Achievement In Primary School, Greg J. Strimel, Scott R. Bartholomew, Eunhye Kim, Liwei Zhang
Faculty Publications
This study examined the design cognition and achievement results of both kindergarten and fourth grade students engaged in engineering design-based instructional activities. Relationships between design cognition and student grade level, as well as quality of student work, were investigated. 30 concurrent think-aloud protocols were collected from individual primary students as they worked in groups to design and make a solution to a design task. The concurrent think-aloud protocols were examined and coded to determine the duration of time the participants devoted to a pre-established set of mental processes for technological problem solving. Significant differences between kindergarten and fourth grade participants …

Medical Biochemistry Without Rote Memorization: Multi-Institution Implementation And Student Perceptions Of A Nationally Standardized Metabolic Map For Learning And Assessment, Douglas B. Spicer, Kathryn H. Thompson, Michelle S. Tong, Tina M. Cowan, Tracy B. Fulton, Janet E. Lindsley
Biomedical Sciences Faculty Publications
Despite the growing number of patients worldwide with metabolism-related chronic diseases, medical biochemistry education is commonly perceived as focusing on recall of facts irrelevant for patient care. The authors suggest that this focus on rote memorization of pathways creates excessive cognitive load that may interfere with learners’ development of an integrated understanding of metabolic regulation and dysregulation. This cognitive load can be minimized by providing appropriate references during learning and assessment. Biochemistry educators collaborated to develop a medically relevant Pathways of Human Metabolism map (MetMap) that is now being used at many medical schools as a nationally standardized resource during …

(In)Visible Men On Campus: Campus Racial Climate And Subversive Black Masculinities At A Predominantly White Liberal Arts University, Quaylan Allen
Education Faculty Articles and Research
There is an emerging body of literature examining the academic success of Black men attending predominantly White colleges and universities, though less is known about Black college men’s experiences at liberal arts institutions. In this paper, I draw upon semi-structured and photovoice interview data from a study on Black male college students attending a predominantly White liberal arts institution in the USA. Specifically, I will present narrative and visual data of how Black college men perceive the campus racial climate and make sense of their (in)visibility at the university. Drawing upon poststructuralist theories of gender and critical race theory, I …

Gonski, Learning And The Case For Change, Geoff Masters
Teacher columnist – Geoff Masters
The Gonski 2.0 recommendations may provide our best hope of reversing the long-term decline in the reading, mathematics and science levels of Australian 15-year-olds. A notable feature of Gonski’s report was that it looked at learning from the perspective of learners and recognised that the way we currently organise the school curriculum disadvantages some students.

Pisa Australia In Focus Number 4: Anxiety, Marina Schmid
Pisa Australia In Focus Number 4: Anxiety, Marina Schmid
OECD Programme for International Student Assessment (PISA) Australia
The pressure to get good grades is one of the most frequently cited sources of stress for school age children and adolescents (OECD, 2017). Both schoolwork-related anxiety and test anxiety have been shown to have a negative impact on student academic performance and general well-being. As students move into the later years of schooling, the academic demand on them increases and they are expected to manage this along with their emotional responses to it. Alongside the assessments of students’ performance in reading, mathematics and scientific literacy, PISA also collects information about their experiences of schooling – their worries, their interests …

Proficient Or Deficient? Pre-Service Elementary Teachers' Social Studies Content Knowledge In The Era Of Nclb, Kimberlee Anne Sharp, Kimberely Fletcher Nettleson
Faculty Research at Morehead State University
Millennial generation pre-service teachers enrolled in undergraduate social studies methods courses are largely the products of NCLB and the concomitant marginalization of social studies during their K-12 education experience. This study examined a sample (N=136) of pre-service elementary teachers’ entry-point social studies content knowledge strengths and weaknesses over a three-year time frame and the degree to which NCLB era K-12 content standards had an impact on pre-service teachers’ entry-point content knowledge scores. The unintended consequences of NCLB on pre-service elementary teachers’ social studies content knowledge and recommendations for intervention and continuous improvement are presented in this paper.
Automation Of Air Traffic Management Using Fuzzy Logic Algorithm To Integrate Unmanned Aerial Systems Into The National Airspace, Kouroush Jenab, Joseph Pineau
Automation Of Air Traffic Management Using Fuzzy Logic Algorithm To Integrate Unmanned Aerial Systems Into The National Airspace, Kouroush Jenab, Joseph Pineau
Faculty Research at Morehead State University
Unmanned Aircraft Systems (UAS) have been increasing in popularity in personal, commercial, and military applications. The increase of the use of UAS poses a significant risk to general air travel, and will burden an already overburdened Air Traffic Control (ATC) network if the Air Traffic Management (ATM) system does not undergo a revolutionary change. Already there have been many near misses reported in the news with personal hobbyist UAS flying in controlled airspace near airports almost colliding with manned aircraft. The expected increase in the use of UAS over the upcoming years will exacerbate this problem, leading to a catastrophic …

09. Group Dynamics, Illinois Mathematics And Science Academy
CORE
The Group Dynamics module focuses on informing students about inter/intra group interactions, while also demonstrating the role of an individual within a group. As individuals become a part of a group, they lose a certain distinction between their personal identity and their group personality, or prototype. Individuals become part of a social categorization and comparison, and require the skills of empathy and relations to successfully communicate with not only their ingroup, but also their outgroup. An absence of awareness of the feelings around them can develop the negative effects of groupthink, as individual ideas are unheard. As fitting into the …

Latent Class Analysis Of Children With Math Difficulties And/Or Math Learning Disabilities: Are There Cognitive Differences?, H. Lee Swanson, Andres F. Olide, Jennifer E. Kong
Education Faculty Articles and Research
This study investigated whether a latent class of children with math difficulties (MD) or math learning disabilities (MLD) emerged within a heterogeneous sample of learners. A latent class analysis was computed on children (N = 447) in Grade 3 who were administered a battery of math, reading, and cognitive measures. The analysis yielded four important findings. First, a discrete latent class of children with MD (15% of the sample) or MLD (10% of the sample) emerged when setting cut-off scores at or below the 25th and 11th percentile, respectively. Second, model testing yielded a high probability of finding children with …

Examination The Impact Of Various Factors On Student Success In An Introduction To Circuit Analysis Course, David Parent
Faculty Publications
In this work in progress, several models to predict student success in a sophomore introduction to circuit analysis class were created based on prior grade point average, grade in a pre-requisite physics class, the semester the pre-requisite physics class was taken, the number of units a student was taking, the number of times a student repeated the circuits class, and the number of times a student repeated any class prior to enrollment. While all models were statistically significant, the model that included prior GPA and the grade in a pre-requisite physics was the most significant for the data collection effort. …

Exploring Preschool-Age Children’S Ability To Write Letters, Ying Guo, Allison Breit-Smith, Anna H. Hall, Carrie Biales
Publications
The purpose of this study was to examine the letter-writing ability of preschool children aged 3-5 years and the relationship between early literacy skills (i.e., alphabet knowledge, phonological awareness, and name writing) and letter-writing ability. Thirty-six children were individually assessed on letter writing and early literacy skills thought to be important for letter writing success: letter-name knowledge, letter-sound knowledge, beginning sound awareness, and name writing (i.e., writing names using letters or letter-like forms). Results showed that preschool children demonstrated substantial abilities to write upper-case and lower-case letters and children's age was significantly associated with letter-writing ability. Children's lower-case letter-name knowledge, …

Validating Professional Standards For Teachers: A Practical Guide For Research Design: Snapshot Literature Review, Jen Jackson, Yung Nietschke
Teaching standards and teacher evaluation
This report aims to establish a strong evidence base for planning a validation study of professional standards for teachers. It presents findings from a rapid "snapshot" review of relevant research literature, to identify previous examples of validation studies, and extract lessons from these about worthwhile methods and considerations in research design. This review was originally conducted to inform the design of a validation study of the draft Myanmar Teacher Competency Standards Framework, but may also have wider relevance to other education systems pursuing similar standards-based reforms. This report presents findings from the literature review. It is divided into four sections: …

Further Validation Of Survey Effort Measures Of Relevant Character Skills: Results From A Sample Of High School Students, Gema Zamarro, Malachi Nichols, Angela Duckworth, Sidney D'Mello
Education Reform Faculty and Graduate Students Publications
Character skills, including conscientiousness, grit or self-control are important determinants of relevant life outcomes. However, researchers struggle to find valid measures of these skills and many existing datasets lack any measures of them at all. This limits research on how these important skills could be better supported and developed. Recent research has shown the potential of parametrizations of survey effort measures as proxy measures of character skills related to conscientiousness, to either complement other collected measures or to add to datasets that lack such measures. This study provides further validation of these survey effort measures in a sample of high …
The Effects Of Regulations On Private School Choice Program Participation: Experimental Evidence From Florida, Corey Deangelis, Lindsey Burke, Patrick Wolf
The Effects Of Regulations On Private School Choice Program Participation: Experimental Evidence From Florida, Corey Deangelis, Lindsey Burke, Patrick Wolf
Education Reform Faculty and Graduate Students Publications
When deciding whether to participate in a private school choice program, private school leaders weigh additional financial benefits against additional regulatory costs. In theory, raising the costs associated with entering private school choice programs should reduce the likelihood that individual schools participate in those programs. However, very little empirical evidence exists evaluating this idea. While a few studies suggest that more highly regulated programs are correlated with lower levels of school participation, none have established causal relationships between these factors, and none have determined which program regulations are the most costly. Because it is nearly impossible to randomly assign program …

In this age of an ever-increasing list of analytics vendors and endlessly forwarded news articles that trumpet the promises of big data in higher education, it can be easy to become distracted by data science and miss out on another opportunity—supporting increased professionalism amongst university staff, faculty, and administrators. Indeed, like many technologies before it, analytics provides us with an opportunity to catalyze institutional effectiveness, but only when we resist the tendency to believe that technology can replace the need for human ingenuity and judgment. This report will argue that such threats to professional flourishing can be insulated against if …
