Disability Or Creative Ability: Reexamining Our Misconceptions, Patricia Klug
Disability Or Creative Ability: Reexamining Our Misconceptions, Patricia Klug
Forum Lectures
It's not a question of whether some students are made for college and academic work and some are not. Rather it's whether academic work reflects the creative and innovative intelligence that our dyslexic students possess and the world needs. If these students have ended up here at CSB/SJU, they have already shown great intelligence and an unbelievable voracity to succeed. These students come to us many times battered and bruised from the prejudicial system of education that has tried to box in and narrowly represent intelligence. On an individual basis, each student has learned a route that goes in, around, …

The Effect Of Authentic Literacy Experiences As Book Buddies With Hispanic Fourth Graders On Preservice Teachers’ Literacy Content Knowledge And Reading Maturity, Vivian L. Veiga
FIU Electronic Theses and Dissertations
From a sociocultural perspective, individuals learn best from contextualized experiences. In preservice teacher education, contextualized experiences include authentic literacy experiences, which include a real reader and writer and replicate real life communication. To be prepared to teach well, preservice teachers need to gain literacy content knowledge and possess reading maturity.
The purpose of this study was to examine the effect of authentic literacy experiences as Book Buddies with Hispanic fourth graders on preservice teachers’ literacy content knowledge and reading maturity.
The study was a pretest/posttest design conducted over 12 weeks. Preservice teacher participants, the focus of the study, were elementary …

Charter School Facilities Funding, Sarah C. Mckenzie, Gary W. Ritter
Charter School Facilities Funding, Sarah C. Mckenzie, Gary W. Ritter
Policy Briefs
The equity and adequacy of facilities funding for charter schools (as well as traditional public schools (TPS)) is a topic of hot debate in Arkansas and across the country. Proponents of charters argue that charter schools are burdened due to a lack of facilities funding. Other argue that there are great needs in our TPS districts as well, and that these needs should be met first. This brief describes what facilities funding is currently available to charter schools in Arkansas and what other states are doing that we could possibly leverage here in the Natural State.

Arkansas Education Reports
The GPA measure, we believe, is a better representation of student achievement on statewide standardized exams. In this report, we are presenting a list of the top 25 schools in each area. In some cases, these "top 25 lists" will contain more than 25 schools as some schools' GPA scores will be identical. This is not a new phenomenon, as we also exceeded 25 schools in previous reports when using the percent proficient and advanced metric as an indicator for student achievement; however, there are fewer ties using the more precise GPA measure.
After we present our overall snapshot of …

Gottlieb presents an early case study of his mobile augmented reality game Jewish Time Jump: New York design on the ARIS platform for the iPhone and iPad (iOS). The game is set on-location in Washington Square Park in New York city. Players in 5th-7th grade take on the role of time-traveling reporters, landing on site on the eve of the Uprising of 20,000, the largest women-led strike in U.S. History. Based on their GPS location they receive media from over 100 years in the past, interactive with digital characters as they work to gather a story for the fictional Jewish …

Open Educational Resources
Gifted students with visual impairments are twice exceptional learners and may not evidence their advanced science aptitudes without appropriate accommodations for learning science. However, effective tactile science teaching materials may be easily made. Recent research has shown that when tactile materials are used with all students in the class, everyone benefits. This presentation provides many classroom-tested example sets of tactile materials for teaching upper elementary and middle school science concepts. These science concepts include the parts of: a flower, ear, insect, beaver habitat, volcano, hydroelectric power plant, plant cell, and sun. Critical and creative thinking skill strategies to accompany these …
