Issues Related To Counseling Mexican Americans, Garrin D. Prather Jan 1995

Issues Related To Counseling Mexican Americans, Garrin D. Prather

Graduate Research Papers

The unique psychological problems plaguing Mexican Americans have led to a barrage of articles about how to counsel this population. However, few of these articles have addressed some of the reasons Mexican Americans have historically underutilized mental health counseling services (Keefe & Casas, 1980; Keefe, Padilla, & Carlos, 1978; Padilla & Ruiz, 1973; Padilla, Ruiz, & Alvarez, 1975; Ponterotto, 1987; Sue, 1977). Even fewer articles have addressed the issue of acculturation and its major role in causing psychological stress in the lives of many Mexican Americans (Montgomery, 1992; Padilla, Alvarez, & Lindholm, 1986).

The Effect Of A Time Line Technique To Supplement The Teaching Of American History In Fifth Grade, Kay M. Treiber

Graduate Research Papers

The effects of nine months of a daily enrichment procedure for teaching American history to fifth grade students were investigated. This enrichment procedure was designed to enhance the historical thinking ability of the experimental group. Historical thinking is defined as using critical thinking skills to make connections between specific events and the time line of history (Booth, 1980). Learners in the treatment group received a daily holistic time line approach to American history followed by the sequential units. The time line approach established the whole picture of history using ten major events which the students use daily to deduce the …

Retellings To Assess Comprehension Of Expository Text, Eileen M. Toillion Jan 1995

Retellings To Assess Comprehension Of Expository Text, Eileen M. Toillion

Graduate Research Papers

Chapter I was implemented in 1965 as a federally funded supplemental program to assist disadvantaged children in becoming better readers. Since that time changes have occurred in reading instruction and assessment. Traditionally, instruction focused on phonics to decode and question and answer tests to assess comprehension. Today, teachers stress phonics less and use authentic assessments to evaluate comprehension. This study sought to determine if retellings would improve comprehension of expository text following instruction in the conventions of expository text. Five, third grade, Chapter I students (four girls and one boy) rendered a pre-instruction retelling, followed by instruction in the conventions …

Improving Reading Comprehension Through The Formation Of Mental Images, Betty A. Young Schmidt Jan 1995

Improving Reading Comprehension Through The Formation Of Mental Images, Betty A. Young Schmidt

Graduate Research Papers

This literature review explores recent research to support the hypothesis that training students to form mental images will facilitate comprehension and enable the reader to find more enjoyment while engaged in the reading process. There is a relationship between forming mental images and age. Beginning readers need illustrations to enhance comprehension; however, by the third grade level many students are able to improve their comprehension when instructed in forming mental images. Among poor comprehenders mental imagery was shown to be effective as a memory and comprehension device. The findings of this review suggest to educators that the training of self-generated …

Phonemic Awareness Activities For First-Grade Students: A Descriptive Project, Karen Solomon Jan 1995

Phonemic Awareness Activities For First-Grade Students: A Descriptive Project, Karen Solomon

Graduate Research Papers

This project examined the use of three practices as means of developing graphophonic awareness in first-grade students. The three practices were: journal writing, in which students used invented spelling in their writing (Goodman, 1989}; phonics charts in which students listed and located words with specific phonemic elements (Routman, 1991}; and Making Words an activity in which students manipulated letters to form various words (Cunningham & Cunningham, 1992}. These practices were taught through the context of whole-word relationships and meaningful experiences. The specific phonemic elements targeted were the th, .s.b., and w digraphs, blends with s., 1, and r, and the …

Spelling: A Consideration Of One School's Curriculum, Robert W. Follmuth Jan 1995

Spelling: A Consideration Of One School's Curriculum, Robert W. Follmuth

Graduate Research Papers

Spelling is" the foundation of reading and the greatest ornament of writing," according to Noah Webster in 1783 (Venezky, 1980, p. 26). The interest of scholars and educators in spelling has risen and fallen over the years, but the public perception of its importance has remained strikingly constant. Americans sometimes perceive spelling to be the very soul and fiber of education and even society. According to Templeton (1992), spelling has been the bedrock of literacy, the barometer of intelligence, the measure of our school's successes.

Reflectivity Of Preservice Teachers' Perceptions And Practices In A Novice Instructional Environment, Jeanne Delk Montenier

Graduate Research Papers

This study examined reflective language that preservice teachers engaged in as they structured discourse about their tutorial experiences. Four subjects responded to pre- and postinterviews and a repeated conference questioning frame. Key reflective language from their responses resulted in three broad categories of reflection: Self-Discovery, Instructional Assessment, and Flexibility. Stages of reflective judgment were assigned to each subject at the beginning and at the end of the study, culminating in an overall stage of reflective judgment for each subject. Results reinforced the validity of Korthagen and Wubbels (1991) study on what reflective teachers say and do. The greatest growth was …

Rp489 Impacting Private Sector Policy For Families, Georgia L. Stevens Jan 1995

Rp489 Impacting Private Sector Policy For Families, Georgia L. Stevens

University of Nebraska-Lincoln Extension: Historical Materials

Who is caring for families(*) these days? Historically, we've had the notion that families needed to be self-sufficient. But, today, dramatic changes in family structure and family member's employment have shifted this thinking. As family policy educator and researcher Shirley Zimmerman (personal communication, April 26, 1993) states,

"increasingly it is recognized that the well-being of families is dependent on the functioning of other societal institutions, such as government and business. For this reason, government is taking an expanding interest in the role of the private sector, namely business and industry, for ensuring the health and economic security of workers and …

University of Nebraska-Lincoln Extension: Historical Materials

This publication describes the most common types of ventilation fans and compares their physical and performance characteristics.

Two general types of ventilation fans are commonly used for agricultural applications. Each type has many different blade diameters, materials, blade shapes, speeds, and motor horsepowers available. The desired airflow rate and the resistance to airflow through the ventilation system, or static pressure capabilities, are the two primary considerations when selecting a ventilation fan. Other considerations include maintenance requirements, noise levels, and energy efficiency.

Ec95-816 Extending The Clean Water Act: Issues And Alternatives, Roy Frederick Jan 1995

Ec95-816 Extending The Clean Water Act: Issues And Alternatives, Roy Frederick

University of Nebraska-Lincoln Extension: Historical Materials

Author's note: This publication was written in the months immediately prior to the beginning of the 104th Congress in January 1995. While the basic issues ave not changed, the schedule for reauthorization of the Clean Water Act and the approach to issues may have been altered by the change in political-party leadership in the Congress. For example, wetlands policy and private property rights may be treated as separate pieces of legislation in 1995.

The Federal Water Pollution Control Act of 1972, frequently referred to as the Clean Water Act (CWA), was last amended and updated in 1987. This reauthorization expired …

Nf95-218 Conjunctive Use Policy Options, William Miller Jan 1995

Nf95-218 Conjunctive Use Policy Options, William Miller

University of Nebraska-Lincoln Extension: Historical Materials

Background

The hydrologic cycle controls water available for use. Rainfall, evaporation, runoff, percolation, and transpiration combine to influence the water available at a specific location at a particular point in time. The speed at which water moves among stages in the hydrologic cycle and the amount of time it spends in storage at any stage affects water availability to users. The conjunctive use issue refers to the portion of the hydrologic cycle where groundwater and surface water interface and influence each other.

Users who couldn't depend on an irregular flow of water over time developed systems that modify the variable …
