Portrayal Of Disabilities In Caldecott Books, Tina Taylor, Mary Anne Prater, Jennifer Jenson

The authors read all of the books that received Caldecott Medal and Honor status awarded between 1938 and 2005 and found that 11 included a character with a disability. For each book, they analyzed characterizations of those with disabilities and generated tips for using the book to teach about disabilities. They argue that accurate portrayals of characters with disabilities, particularly the types of disabilities encountered most frequently by young children, are needed in award-winning picture books.

A new movement has begun. Spirituality and religion are being integrated into racial-cultural psychology and counseling. This chapter will review the literature that is the basis of that movement. We first describe the historical forces alluded to by Trimble (2000) that until only recently have minimized the relevance of religion and spirituality to psychological research and practice. We then summarize the potential benefits and concerns about incorporating spiritual and religious perspectives into research and practice that have been suggested in publications of the past 30 years. Individualistic values characterize contemporary society and many popular approaches to mental health treatment. This paper critiques the individualistic values embedded in the helping professions that implicitly contradict the teachings ofJesus Christ, the surest foundation for mental health interventions. Members of AMCAP are encouraged to search out and replace problematic values that contradict gospel teachings which have been integrated into contemporary mental health practice.

By definition, children with autism have deficits in communication. Often, when parents notice that something is "different" about their child, it is that he does not acquire language at the same rate as his peers, that the child uses what language he has in an idiosyncratic fashion (e.g., repeating phrases from videos, using pronouns incorrectly), or that the child appears to understand only that language which might be reinforcing to him (e.g., not responding to "Look at Mommy," but responding to "Do you want a cookie?)" A potentially important variable that has received little attention in the disabilities literature is the caregiver's locus of control beliefs for child improvement as they relate to treatment compliance and actual child improvement. To evaluate the construct's utility in a practice setting, 131 caregiver-child dyads were assessed twice, twelve months apart. Children were an average of approximately four years old at the first assessment, and all of them had mild to severe developmental disabilities. Aspects of caregiver compliance to treatment were rated, and measures of child development status, family functioning, and caregiver locus of control were administered. Results indicated that …

Impact Of Peer Teaching On The Acquisition Of Social Skills By Adolescents With Learning Disabilities, Mary Anne Prater, Loretta A. Serna, Kayleen K. Nakamura

The purpose of the study was to examine the impact of peer teaching on social skills acquisition of adolescents with learning disabilities. A special education teacher taught 12 students with learning disabilities three social skills, giving positive feedback, contributing to discussion, and accepting negative feedback. A random sample of five students previously taught by the teacher then instructed five other students with learning disabilities. Results indicated that both groups, the students taught by their teachers and those taught by their peers, improved in all three social skills. Both groups made less improvement in accepting negative feedback. The authors' conclude that …

This is the Third Annual Report on the independent evaluation of the California Master Plan for Special Education, which was mandated in Assembly Bill 1250 and Senate Bill 1870. It contains the findings from follow-up studies in six Master Plan (MP) and four non-Master Plan (NMP) areas during 1979-80. The findings are based on responses of administrators, support personnel, and special education and regular classroom teachers to question­ naires and to questions asked during interviews conducted by SRI staff mem­ bers during 1-week visits to each of the 10 sites. Presented is a two-volume study of the characteristics of students identified as handicapped from educational, clinical, and psychological evaluations. The first volume describes an analysis (based on surveys collected by the National Center for Health Statistics) of the affects on identification of 14,185 6- to 17-year old students of family income, race, population size of place of residence, and geographic location. Among six primary findings reviewed are that all three types of teacher-identified handicaps (physical, mental, and speech) were significantly concentrated in the low income elementary school population, and that teachers identified both mental and speech handicaps at a significantly …

This volume reports the first of two studies conducted by the Educa­tional Policy Research Center (EPRC) of SRI for the Assistant Secretary for Education (ASE) on the handicapped school population. The volume presents data on patterns of socioeconomic and demographic characteristics of teacher-identified handicapped students. The Development And Analysis Of Base Line Data For The Estimation Of Incidence In The Handicapped School Age Population, Patricia Craig, Norman Mceachron

The purpose of this study was, first, to examine and critique the more popular incidence sources for handicapping conditions in the school age population, and second, to establish reasonably reliable base line data on which the future analysis of special population groups can be grounded. On the basis of this study, we suggest that the National Center of Health Statistics estimates become the primary source for further analysis due to both their reliability and comparability. It is questionable whether these figures could be refined further by conducting an independent national survey of school children. Data reliability is important, since even …
