Education To Enable Sustainable Economic Development, Ozeias Rodrigues Da Rocha, Lucia Morales, Jon-Hans Coetzer, Cormac Macmahon

Papers

Sustainable development has been widely discussed in the economic and political debate for the past 20 years, but practical, sustainable measures are still lacking. This fact poses a serious challenge to governments as they strive to balance the demand for natural and social resources while ensuring economic progress and risking severe environmental degradation. The urgent need for an economically sustainable development model raises essential questions, such as integrating education into business models and government policies. Education plays a vital role in sustainable development, as recognised by the United Nations. Technological solutions alone are insufficient; our society requires a shift in …

Educational Development For Online Teaching, Jordanne Christie

Teaching and Learning in a Digital Context

The data were collected through an online survey of 34 participants, face-to-face interviews with 18 participants and documentary evidence review of 6 participants, and was analysed using Braun and Clarke’s (2006) thematic analysis approach. The findings suggest that the knowledge and experience that college educators acquire when participating in educational development for online …

Three Key Challenges Facing Higher Education And Policymakers, Ellen Hazelkorn May 2012

Three Key Challenges Facing Higher Education And Policymakers, Ellen Hazelkorn

Articles

Our preoccupation with the relative standing of universities and national education systems—illustrated by the growing popularity and obsession with university rankings—reflects the consensus that higher education is essential for economic growth, global competitiveness and a civil society. Universities and nations are being measured according to indicators of global capacity and potential in which comparative and competitive advantages come into play. The more globalization drives a single market in education, as it does in most goods and services, the more higher education is a beacon for investment and talent—the more this kind of barometer is inevitable.

The Discourses Of Higher Education In Ireland: Religion, Nationalism And Economic Development, Nora French

Articles

Higher education is shaped and changed by the context in which it operates. For the past several decades, it has been shaped in Ireland by plans for economic development and the focus has been on education as an enabler of wealth creation. It is claimed to have been an important factor in the rise of the Celtic Tiger economy, and the government are again looking to education as a main contributor to recovery from the current recession. This focus marked a major change in Irish higher education. It was in sharp opposition to the deep-seated tradition of liberal education based …

Those dimensions include biographical, cultural, micro-political, structural, socio-historical, technological and scientific. The research design was essentially a hermeneutical, interpretative case study using qualitative data gathering techniques. The primary research methods employed were interviews conducted with lecturing staff, and a survey conducted with students travelling to Germany for continuing professional development. An extensive literature review was conducted …

  • Defines the height, bulk and massing of buildings.
  • Sets out suggested relationships between buildings and public spaces.
  • Identifies the movement patterns for people on foot, or by bicycle, car or public transport, as well as looking at the needs of service and refuse vehicles.

Activity Systems Within Blended Problem-Based Learning In Academic Professional Development, Roisin Donnelly

Articles

Blending face-to-face and online problem-based learning environments presents opportunities for both learners and lecturers to take part in collaborative knowledge construction. Activity theory is a suitable framework to investigate such environments and the learning processes that both sets of participants experience when engaging in these complementary environments. This paper attempts to map out the potential for activity systems using a blended problem-based learning approach through the exploration of an accredited academic staff development programme in Ireland. Firstly, an analysis of tool use and the discourse that participants and tutors engage in is presented. Secondly, tutor reflections about the evolution of …

An Action Research Project To Explore Providing Improved Academic Support For Newly Appointed Staff In A Higher Education Institution In Ireland, Roisin Donnelly

Other resources

In my current professional role as an academic in a higher education institution in Ireland, I have only recently asked myself if I have been living in the direction of my educational values (Whitehead, 1989a). Educational values are ideas about what constitutes an educationally worthwhile process of teaching and learning: they define the relationship between knowledge, teachers and learners (Elliott, 1995). Action research begins with values (McNiff, 1995). In my attempts to become a more developed self-reflective practitioner, there are times when it helps me to take a time-out from my daily practice in work and instead put some time …
