Canines can provide emotional support, create a nonjudgmental environment, facilitate positive social interactions, and shape student behavior. This study investigated the impact of a canine-assisted reading program on four second-grade students' reading fluency and attitudes toward reading. Oral reading fluency (ORF) was measured using ORF probes, and students' attitudes toward reading were measured with the Elementary Reading Attitude Survey. Although ORF skills did not improve significantly following the program, students' attitudes toward reading did. Implications regarding innovative strategies for reading fluency programs, including canine-assisted methods, are discussed, with emphasis on the importance of maintaining reading enjoyment among readers needing extra …

A Collection Of Calculus Lesson Plans: Deriving The 'Why' Behind Derivatives, Kasey Brabec
A Collection Of Calculus Lesson Plans: Deriving The 'Why' Behind Derivatives, Kasey Brabec
Honors Theses
The traditional mathematics classroom is led with a focus on procedural understanding, with deep conceptual understanding considered to be unimportant or too difficult to teach within the allotted time. Both levels of understanding are important mathematical competencies, as it is rare for either of them to function well without accessibility to the other. The disparity between conceptual understanding and procedural understanding in the mathematics classroom is no larger than in courses like Calculus. This project is a collection of fifteen lesson plans constructed with an emphasis on conceptual understanding and the connectivity of Calculus. Each lesson plan’s overview contains the …

How To: Virtual Events For Large Section Course: Preparing Students For A Post Covid Work World With The Help Of Industry Partners, Melissa Diegnau
Management and Entrepreneurship Department Publications
This session offers you insight on how one had to pivot with nearly 300 students during COVID and come out shining. The goal is to see how technology can be used to offer successful virtual events for large section courses and do so better than the traditional in-person offering because of increased industry participation and preparation for the post-COVID work-world. I will walk you through why the change happened, why we kept it virtual post-COVID, and how you can offer a virtual mock interview to nearly 300 students in 2.5 hours and have both students and industry raving about the …

‘How Are You Doing?’: College Instructors’ Relationships And Communication With Students With Intellectual Disabilities, Gavin W. Watts, Mariya T. Davis, Eric J. Lopez
Special Education Faculty Publications
The Higher Education Opportunity Act has increased the number of postsecondary education programs established to assist individuals with intellectual disabilities (ID) in attending college. With the development of these new programs, there is an ever-present need to assess the interactions and necessary strategies to support students with ID in higher education. As college instructors are the primary instructors within these settings and programs, the current study explored this population’s perceptions and experiences related to instructing, communicating, and developing effective relationships with students with ID in their coursework. In-depth interviews were conducted with six college instructors working with students with ID …

Science Of Reading Advocates Are Teaching Children To Guess At Words, Andrew P. Johnson
Science Of Reading Advocates Are Teaching Children To Guess At Words, Andrew P. Johnson
Elementary and Literacy Education Department Publications
Tim Shanahan, Louisa Moats, Linnea Ehri, Wilson Reading Systems, Orton-Gillingham profiteers, SOR advocates, the International Dyslexia Association, and other plucky little phonics-first penguins are advocating that meaning-based reading teachers teach children to read by guessing guess at words. This of course is nonsense.
