After identifying this gap in our business programs, we created a stand-alone course that focuses on business sustainability. This paper addresses the following questions: What is the business case for adding the course? What should the …

With so much public discussion of gender issues in the US, it is important to introduce students to the breadth of reproductive expressions in the biological world early in their university education. I do this in two ways: first by centering a first-year research project on the reproduction of hermaphroditic snails, and second by focusing a second-year writing seminar on “Varieties of Animal Reproduction.” The laboratory component of our Foundations of Biology I course is a semester-long investigation where students are guided through the process of scientific research. With support from instructors, each team frames a question, writes a proposal, …

The oft-quoted advice to “Follow your passion” is little help to people who have no particular interests or too many. However, if you want to do research, you need to pick one or more specific topics to study. I myself am interested in many research topics and have a tendency to take on too many projects and feel overwhelmed. I’ve met several students who have the same issue. I’ve also met students who weren’t sure where their interests lay and who waited for inspiration to strike rather than diving in.

A democracy that’s truly representative of the people depends on the people to exercise their right to vote. There are some groups of people, however, who regularly don’t vote—because they don’t know they’re eligible. Contrary to popular belief, in Illinois, a convicted felon regains eligibility to vote as soon as he or she leaves a corrections facility. Anyone awaiting trial in jail is eligible to vote, too. DePaul political scientist Christina Rivers, an expert in voting rights and a DePaul Presidential Fellow, helped pass legislation to provide voter education to soon-to-be released inmates. In this episode, she discusses these initiatives, …

The doctoral advisor, typically the principal investigator (PI), is often characterized as a singular or primary mentor who guides students using a cognitive apprenticeship model. Alternatively, the cascading mentorship model describes the members of laboratories or research groups receiving mentorship from more senior laboratory members and providing it to more junior members (i.e., PIs mentor postdocs, postdocs mentor senior graduate students, senior students mentor junior students, etc.). Here we show that PIs laboratory and mentoring activities do not significantly predict students skill development trajectories, but the engagement of postdocs and senior graduate students in laboratory interactions do. We found that …

How can closure activities end my lessons with a lasting impression? Natasha Yates, St. Catherine University20-Minute Mentor SessionYou will take away many quick and easy closure strategies for your lessons from this session. Lectures or class meetings that just end do not leave lasting impressions as well as classes with closure. Closure or the wrap up of a lesson helps students recognize, summarize, acknowledge, and synthesize what they just learned.
