Integrating A New Service Into The Learning Environment: The Value Of Communication, Gan Ye, Sally Bryant

Gan Ye

Libraries often face challenges when launching new services and integrating new applications with existing systems. Universal problems in the library world include not only technical issues but also the need for cooperation and working relationships both within the library and outside of the library. Last August XXX University Libraries completed our initial roll out of SIPX, a new electronic reserves system which is a cloud based product created by Stanford University. Our implementation of SIPX is a case study in best practices for dealing with all of the logistics that are outside of the actual technological issues. The project is …

Rape Myth Acceptance: A Comparison Of Military Service Academy And Civilian Fraternity And Sorority Students, Marjorie H. Carroll, Judith Rosenstein, John D. Foubert, M. Diane Clark, Lisa Korenman

John D. Foubert

Although both the military and fraternities have been theorized to be characterized by
norms and attitudes that serve to legitimize violence against women, no previous work has
examined the potential similarity and differences in rape-supportive beliefs of these 2
environments or the people drawn to them. Further, the belief systems of women within
these organizations have received little attention. As such, the current study sought to serve
as an initial exploration of the rape-supportive belief systems of people drawn to these
groups. Participants were recruited from students entering 2 military service academies

Abstract Refining city services is gradually being placed in the hands of the citizens,
or, as in the case of IBM’s initiative, Blet’s build a planet of smarter cities (https://

cost and gaining control in building smart transportation management systems, IBM
provided a grant to the city of Chicago to reinvigorate Chicago’s K-12 schools and city
college. Similarly, Catherine Bracy (https://www.codeforamerica.org/people/catherinebracy/)

The First-Semester Student: The Legal-Problem-Solving Apprentice, Kylie Fletcher Mar 2016

The First-Semester Student: The Legal-Problem-Solving Apprentice, Kylie Fletcher

Kylie Fletcher

Students are asked to answer hypothetical legal problems very early in their studies. They are typically introduced to legal-problem-solving processes (eg IRAC, FILAC, MIRAT and CLEO) very early in their first- semester subjects. An ability to answer hypothetical legal problems is critical to the student’s success at law school. In my role as a teacher in a firstsemester subject (Principles of Contractual Liability), I observe that some students remain confused about the process that they adopt to answer hypothetical legal problems well into their first semester. Further, many students fail to understand that the process they adopt can be applied …

Laramie 2.0: Journey Of A Queer Professor, Eric D. Teman J.D., Ph.D.

Eric D Teman, J.D., Ph.D.

Through autoethnographic poetry, I take the reader on a journey through my experience of moving to Laramie, Wyoming, to become faculty at the University of Wyoming. As a gay male who is still haunted by the 1998 brutal murder of Matthew Shepard in Laramie, I engage in storytelling: relaying my personal experiences of living in modern-day Laramie, showing the reader my fears, obstacles, and revelations through prose.

Dr Paul Weldon

This report analyses the 2007, 2010 and 2013 Staff in Australia's Schools (SiAS) survey results to produce profiles of primary and secondary teachers who are working in a library role. It compares the findings about numbers of teachers working in a library role with the overall teacher cohort in terms of location, school sector and socio-economic status of schools. It also profiles teachers working in a library role in terms of their average age, gender, level of tertiary study and basis of work. It makes particular mention of early career teachers in libraries and teachers working out of field in …

Discrepant Stakeholder Perspectives On Graduate Employability Strategies, Shelley Kinash, Linda Crane, Madelaine Judd, Cecily Knight

Linda Crane

A literature review identified 12 strategies that have been empirically linked to improvements in graduate employability. A survey methodology was used to investigate self-reported use and/or perspectives on these strategies among four stakeholder groups. The following questions were asked: to students – What strategies are you using to improve your graduate employability; to graduates – What strategies did you use to improve your employability?; to higher education career development professionals and educators – Which of the following employability strategies do you provide for students?; and to employers – Which of the following strategies undertaken by students does your organisation value …

Enhancing Graduate Employability Of The 21st Century Learner, Shelley Kinash, Linda Crane Mar 2016

Enhancing Graduate Employability Of The 21st Century Learner, Shelley Kinash, Linda Crane

Linda Crane

Today’s higher education students want choice, personalisation, efficiency and relevance leading to maximal outcomes, including employment. They need heightened media literacy and advanced higher order thinking, which can be facilitated through technology-enhanced pedagogies. The reported research inquired into how higher education can heighten graduate employability in the context of 21st century learning. Analysed Australian national data from 705 completed surveys, and interviews/focus groups with 147 people revealed that there are discrepancies between stakeholder groups (students, graduates, higher education personnel and employers) that must be acknowledged and rectified if the 21st century learner is to maximise employability. Research results indicated that …

Learning Technical Writing: Creating An Opportunity For Engineering Undergraduates, Debbie Morrow Mar 2016

Learning Technical Writing: Creating An Opportunity For Engineering Undergraduates, Debbie Morrow

Debbie Morrow

Extended Abstract

An undergraduate engineering program emphasizing hands-on learning and close interaction with engineering industry, including mandatory three terms of co-op employment, can find it challenging to build writing skills into its curriculum, too. Grand Valley State University has established its mission on principles of liberal education that permeate all of its programs, and on an overarching commitment to student success, academically and in transition to the work world. GVSU’s School of Engineering (SoE) has struggled to design and offer a writing-intensive experience that benefits Engineering majors and adequately prepares them to meet the needs of future industry employers in …

Working The System: A Model For System-Wide Change In Pre-Service Teacher Education, Jo-Anne Ferreira, Lisa Ryan Mar 2016

Working The System: A Model For System-Wide Change In Pre-Service Teacher Education, Jo-Anne Ferreira, Lisa Ryan

Associate ProfessorJo-Anne Ferreira

This paper reports on a study undertaken to identify the strategies and models used to facilitate curriculum change within teacher education institutions. Findings indicate three main approaches, which we name the ‘resource development’, ‘action research’ and ‘contextual change’ models. A new model that combines the best features of each is proposed. In this paper we provide a brief overview of the three models, a rationale for the new model being proposed, and a discussion of the systems theory concepts underpinning the model. It is our contention that the Mainstreaming Change model provides a structure for change to occur simultaneously at …

Science Fiction In Education: Case Studies From Classroom Implementations, Charalambos Vrasidas, Lucy Avraamidou, Katerina Theodoridou, Sotiris Themistokleous, Petros Panaou

Petros Panaou

This manuscript reports on findings from the implementation of the EU project “Science Fiction in Education” (Sci-Fi-Ed). The project provides teachers with tools, training, and guidance that will assist them in enhancing their teaching, making science more attractive to students, connecting it with real-life issues such as the environment, and providing girls and other marginalised groups with access to science resources, material, and learning opportunities. The central project idea is to achieve this by incorporating science fiction (Sci-Fi) in science teaching. The aim of this paper is to present the framework and the lessons learned from designing and implementing the …

Mission Driven Curriculum, Thomas Oldenski Mar 2016

Mission Driven Curriculum, Thomas Oldenski

Thomas Oldenski

The curriculum of the Catholic school needs to be driven by the Mission Statement of the school. Curriculum is one of the places where the mission statement should be incarnated and Catholic schools are called to do so by Church documents on education. Each school needs to confront the issue that if X is the mission, what follows for curriculum, teaching, school organization, and so on? Do unit plans, modes of instruction and forms of assessment reflect the Mission Statement? In this session, both theory and practice will be addressed so that participants might begin to do the necessary reform …

Teacher Qualifications And Student Achievement: A Panel Data Of Analysis, Trevor Collier Mar 2016

Teacher Qualifications And Student Achievement: A Panel Data Of Analysis, Trevor Collier

Trevor Collier

Recent academic research suggests that teacher quality plays an important role in student achievement: however, empirical research on the efficacy of policies requiring teachers to obtain certain degrees is inconclusive, particularly in elementary education. This paper models a panel data production function with fixed effects using the Early Childhood Longitudinal Study (ECLS-K) to asses the relationship between different undergraduate and graduate majors and elementary student test scores. Specifcally, we aim to discern if there is a difference in teacher efficacy within the different education related majors (e.g. early childhood education and elementary education) and between education and non-education related majors.

Are You Research Ready: Adding Imagine Easy Academy's Tutorials To Library Instruction At Hamline, Siobhan Dizio, Kimberly Feilmeyer, Jon Neilson

Kristofer Scheid

In Fall 2015, Bush Library rolled out a series of library tutorials to students enrolled in Hamline’s First Year Seminars (FYSEMs). Students were required to complete five “courses” before meeting with their librarian for classroom instruction. ImagineEasy’s product helped the librarians to address stated University and library information literacy learning outcomes and allowed us to re-imagine the classroom experience.

Book Cover-My Schoolhouse Is A Ghost Town .Pdf

Sunni Ali

This book is dedicated to the terrific educators that inspire, uplift, and challenge young people to achieve their personal goals and aspirations. The journey of being a teacher is truly arduous and challenging, which makes it difficult for some teachers to remember why they entered this field.

Teachers dedicate a great portion of their lives giving back to society, and despite their sincerest efforts, policyholders, business leaders, and certain members of the public do not appreciate the work educators perform on a consistent basis. Although it is very telling how many public schools have been closed and minority teachers dismissed …

Courtroom And Classroom Across The Curriculum: The Strange Case Of Dr. Jekyll & Mr. Hyde, Jason Goldsmith Mar 2016

Courtroom And Classroom Across The Curriculum: The Strange Case Of Dr. Jekyll & Mr. Hyde, Jason Goldsmith

Jason Goldsmith

The Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde draws on Robert Louis Stevensons intimate knowledge of Victorian legal culture knowledge Stevenson acquired while studying law at the University of Edinburgh. (Although he was called to the Scottish bar in 1875, he abandoned the legal profession and never practiced it.) Its trace can be found in the work's title, main characters, and narrative structure: the title suggests a legal action; Mr. Utterson is the legal representative of Henry Jekyll, who is himself both a doctor of law (LLD) and a doctor of Civil laws (DCL); and the final two chapters …

Use Of Social Emotional Learning Skills To Predict Future Academic Success And Progress Toward Graduation, Alan Davis, V. Solberg, Christine De Baca, Taryn Hargrove Gore

Alan Davis

This study evaluated the degree to which a range of social emotional learning skills—academic self-efficacy, academic motivation, social connections, importance of school, and managing psychological and emotional distress and academic stress— could be used as an indicator of future academic outcomes. Using a sample of 4,797 from a large urban school district, we found that high school students classified as performing in the lowest 25% of their grade reported lower social emotional skills than students classified in the top 25% of academic performers by the end of the 8th grade. Two variables, perceived importance of attending college and psychological and …
