Examining Productive Conceptions Of Masculinities: Lessons Learned From Academically Driven African American Male Student-Athletes, Brandon E. Martin, Frank Harris
Frank Harris III
Conceptions of masculinities among African American male student athletes are considered in this article. Grounded in the social constructivist perspective and guided by the phenomenological qualitative research tradition, individual interviews were conducted with 27 academically driven African American male student- athletes attending four Division I universities. Findings suggest that the participants embrace a wide range of productive gender-related attitudes and behaviors that are uncommon among male college student-athletes. Implications and recommendations are offered for coaches and university administrators charged with working with African American male student-athletes.

This paper considers the challenges ahead after having assessed what determined the outcome of the referendum in April 2004 and the balance of forces as they emerge in the Parliamentary elections of 2006. In spite of the generally sound claims that globalisation shifts decision-making away from nation-states, particularly weak and small states to networks beyond the nation-state, in the case of Cyprus what we have for the first time paradoxically is the “fate” of Cyprus primarily in the hands of Cypriots themselves. Although semi-occupied the two communities can make their decision as to the future of their country and state, …

Immigration To Cyprus, Nicos Trimikliniotis
Nicos Trimikliniotis
This chapter discusses the context that has transformed Cyprus from an emigration to an immigration country. It examines public discourse, the legal status, and the social position of migrants and asylum-seekers. This is exposed against the historical and political backdrop of Cyprus, dominated by the ‘national’ problem, which keeps the island divided.

Cultural Learning Outcomes And Summer Study Abroad, Heather W. Allen, Veronica Dristas, Nicole A. Mills
Nicole A Mills
This study investigated cultural learning by 194 high school students in summer study abroad programs. Quantitative analysis was used to determine if significant changes occurred in self reports of cultural, linguistic, and interpersonal challenges in the target culture; understanding of target-culture perspectives, practices, and products; and identification with native versus target culture after study abroad. Outcomes in each area were compared between homestay and non-homestay participants. This chapter was published in "Identity and Second Language Learning: Culture, Inquiry, and Dialogic Activity in Educational Contexts."

A Reevaluation Of The Role Of Anxiety: Self-Efficacy, Anxiety And Their Relation To Reading And Listening Proficiency, Nicole A. Mills, Frank Pajares, Carol Herron
Nicole A Mills
Research findings from several academic domains have demonstrated that students’ judgments of their own academic capabilities, or self-efficacy beliefs, influence their academic behaviors and performances. Absent from this body of research are studies assessing self-efficacy beliefs and their relation to foreign language proficiency. Informed by the tenets of Bandura’s (1986) social cognitive theory, the purpose of this study was to examine the relationship between self-efficacy, anxiety, and French proficiency in reading and listening. Students’ reading self-efficacy in French was positively related to reading proficiency, whereas reading anxiety was not related. Listening self-efficacy was positively associated with listening proficiency only for …

Toward A Thorough Understanding Of The International Foundation Of Andragogy In Hrd And Adult Education, John A. Henschke Edd
John A. Henschke
More than 160 major works published in English from national and international sources on andragogy are presented here, in order to provide an clear and understandable, international foundation fr the linkage between the research, theory and practice of andragogy and its application to Adult Education and Human Resources Development. Six themes have emerged that provide a foundation for the linkage: The evolution of the term: historical antecedents shaping the concept; comparison of American and European understanding; popularizing of the American concept; practical applications; and theory, research, and definition. Andragogy has been used by some as a code word for identifying …

Common Elements For Re-Orienting Higher Education Institutions In Various Countries Toward Lifelong Learning: Research And Implications For Practice, John A. Henschke Edd
John A. Henschke
This research study focused on the question: What common elements will need to be considered to help higher education institutions in various countries shift toward a lifelong learning focus? Research is presented on the background and experiences of various institutions in this regard, developing a policy statement on elements of this re-orientation as a product of a worldwide conference, and ultimately constructing "measurable performance indicators" (MPI) for the seven elements - overarching frameworks, strategic partnerships and linkages, research, teaching and learning processes, administration policies and mechanisms, decision support systems, and student support systems and services. Research and implications for practices …

Malcolm S. Knowles: Four Major Historical Social Movements That Influenced Him And He Influenced As He Became An Adult Educator, John A. Henschke Edd
John A. Henschke
Using a qualitative approach, this research provided thematic analysis and description of the context of Knowles' times. This study set out to rewrite history to complement Knowles' autobiography, The Making of an Adult Educator. The research questions included: What took place when Knowles and Savicevic met in 1966? How did Knowles decide to make use of the term andragogy to name his theory of adult learning in 1967 and 1968? What discourse followed Knowles' introduction of his theory? What social movements in the U.S. occurred during Knowles' times? Denzin's (1989) model of a fully triangulated biographical investigation, consisting of a …

The Voice Of Reason: A Qualitative Examination Of Black Student Perceptions Of Their Black Culture Center, Lori Patton Davis
Lori Patton Davis
Black Culture Centers (BCCs) represent safe and welcoming spaces for Black students at predominantly White Institutions (PWIs). Resulting from the Black Student Movement of the 1960s, BCCs have become institutional mainstays that provide services and programs to the entire campus community. This study examined Black students' perceptions of the Institute of Black Culture at the University of Florida. The discussion and implications provide an in-depth understanding of the historical, current and future role, and mission of BCCs, as well as insights on the importance of BCCs as PWIs strive to better serve the needs of Black students.

Black Culture Centers: Still Central To Student Learning, Lori Patton Davis
Lori Patton Davis
Are support and resource centers that serve students from single cultures still relevant after thirty years and in light of widespread interest in multiculturalism? Lori Patton argues that, at least in the case of black culture centers, these spaces continue to matter a great deal to students.

Channeling Buzz Or Bucks? Ethical Implications For Marketing, Oscar T. Mcknight, Ronald Paugh, Vahn Knight
Channeling Buzz Or Bucks? Ethical Implications For Marketing, Oscar T. Mcknight, Ronald Paugh, Vahn Knight
Oscar T McKnight Ph.D.
Too often higher education officials equate successful enrollment management with determining the appropriate financial-aid package, assuming the student matriculates. However, there are competing theories as to why a student may be attracted to a particular college. Could it be the "buzz"? This study examines the relationship between buzz and bucks with respect to enrollment objectives. Research findings indicate that it is not an either-or proposition. Moreover, marketers are presented with an ethical responsibility to safeguard the public.

East Meets West, Or Vice-Versa: Exploring A Hybrid Pedagogical Approach To Global Instruction, Ronald Paugh, Oscar Mcknight, Jun Gong
Oscar T McKnight Ph.D.
In an increasing multicultural classroom a Confucian-Socratic framework is used to highlight fundamental differences in learning approaches between Eastern and Western cultures. However, educators must also be aware of inherent similarities if best practices are to be gleaned and implemented with ingenuity in the classroom. Therefore, innovations and insights into the qualitative-quantitative continum of contemporary research are offered as an analogue to help build a hybrid model of global instruction. A new Mobius Model of Global Instruction is introduced that emphasizes a multicultural perspective

Politeia And Paideia. “Reminiscences” Of Western Political Thought In A Reading Of Plato’S Politeia, Paulo Ferreira Da Cunha
Paulo Ferreira da Cunha
Many readings have been proposed of the Politeia. We propose here a brief reflection of the intertextual type, not upon the theme or main themes of this work, but more precisely in search of aspects that also seem to have acquired a posterity (or at any rate a universality that allows for the detection of coincidences). It is not merely that Plato’s great utopian ideas have found an echo in later authors, as one the most important of western politico-philosophical canons. It is also that some topics and arguments that appear through this richly magnificent dialogue seem to have had …
