Integrating Ctls Into Campus Strategic Planning Through An Effective Brainstorming Process, Charlie Sweet, Hal Blythe Dec 2009

Integrating Ctls Into Campus Strategic Planning Through An Effective Brainstorming Process, Charlie Sweet, Hal Blythe

Charlie Sweet

One way Centers for Teaching and Learning (CTLs) can position themselves at the epicenter of campus activity and insert themselves into strategic planning is by transforming group work through an effective brainstorming process that the authors have developed called Ideation Development for Excellence in Academic Learning (I.D.E.A.L.). The authors explain the evolution of the process in a learning community from best practices in brainstorming through a working model. The process has been effective with actual groups both on and off campus (vs. laboratory conditions). “Collaboration drives creativity because innovation always emerges from a series of sparks—never a single flash of …

A Symposium Model For Doctoral Students Of Color Seeking Faculty Positions In Higher Education, Samuel Hinton, Sherwood Thompson

Samuel Hinton

The purpose of this article is to share a model for motivating and mentoring students of color who are finding it difficult to complete their doctorate degree because of personal, social, and institutional challenges. Students do not pay a fee to participate in the symposium. They are motivated among other things to build relationships, and establish contacts and networks with a cohort of scholars interested in helping them complete their studies. In addition, the program prepares these students to apply for faculty positions at this university in the mid-west and other institutions of higher education when they graduate. Student populations …

Foreign Languages And Sustainability: Addressing The Connections, Communities And Comparisons Standards In Higher Education, Eleanor Horst, Joshua Pearce Dec 2009

Foreign Languages And Sustainability: Addressing The Connections, Communities And Comparisons Standards In Higher Education, Eleanor Horst, Joshua Pearce

Joshua M. Pearce

This article describes an interdisciplinary collaboration that combined the study of German language with instruction in environmental issues (sustainable development). The project, involving both an independent study and a classroom unit, allowed students to make connections between disciplines, establish contact with German-speaking communities outside the university, and make cultural and linguistic comparisons. By expanding the German-language content on the Web site Appropedia.org, which is devoted to global sustainable development, students took an active role in learning by creating content that can be read and used by the global community of German speakers. This project provided a model for successful interdisciplinary …

Research And Development To Support The Next Stage Of The Harnessing Technology Strategy: The Learner And Their Context, Chris Davies, Anne-Marie Chase, Jenny Good, Dimitrina Spencer

Dr Anne-Marie Chase

The report explores the issues raised in providing children in care, those with special needs and/or in disadvantaged circumstances, with computers and support technology along with Internet access. The authors explore the ways in which technology provision supports wellbeing, and the ways in which the use of the technologies both enables and is enabled by the context of family and informal learning. The key role of parents and carers in this respect is emphasised.

Formation Of Quality Pre-Service Teachers Through Leadership, Service And Pastoral Care, Chris Hackett

Chris Hackett

This book is the third in a series that has applied the findings of values education projects to various fields of education. The findings are taken from updated international research with particular reference to those of the various projects that emanated from the Australian Values Education Program, 2003-2009.
In the first book, the findings that illustrated the close connection between values education and quality teaching were highlighted and referred to as a 'double helix'.
In the second book, findings from service learning were added to the mix, with the trio of values education, quality teaching and service learning referred to …

E-readers are promising teaching and learning devices for the mobile generation whose reading and writing skills educators are working to improve. These two universities are exploring and identifying practices that will best optimize an e-reader’s potential for encouraging deeper student learning. Importance/Relevance: The portable e-reader, so intuitive to students, is the ideal device for the mobile generation. Educators who want to engage students more deeply in reading and writing are using e-readers to help enhance and personalize education for diverse student learners. Student engagement in reading and writing is the overarching objective of these projects. Students carry e-readers everywhere, read …

Comic books, graphic novels, picture books, wordless picture books, illustrated books, and novels, as distinct genres abide to specific conventions. Word-image interaction in each genre is also guided by conventions and can only vary within a preset range. These identifiable conventions assist the interpretation of stories; the reader knows what to expect and how to receive it. We assert, however, that the postmodern era has brought the publication of works that break conventions, resist categorization, subvert reading expectations, and yet are highly successful in communicating powerful and engaging stories.

Virtual Arts: Visual Arts Education In The Virtual World Of Second Life., Lisa Jacka, Allan Ellis Dec 2009

Virtual Arts: Visual Arts Education In The Virtual World Of Second Life., Lisa Jacka, Allan Ellis

Dr Lisa Jacka

Virtual worlds are emerging as the new frontier in the use of ICTs for the engagement of students in primary, secondary and tertiary education. In 2010 the use of the virtual world, Second Life, was trialled as a pedagogical tool in the training of Visual Art Education students studying at Southern Cross University. The students, physically located at three regional campuses, spent time in-world discussing concepts, visiting art sites, creating 2D and 3D art work and designing an exhibition space. This case study makes a comparison between traditional and mixed mode delivery and recommendations are proposed in relation to strategies …

Help-Negation And Suicidal Ideation: The Role Of Depression, Anxiety And Hopelessness., Coralie J. Wilson Dec 2009

Help-Negation And Suicidal Ideation: The Role Of Depression, Anxiety And Hopelessness., Coralie J. Wilson

Coralie J Wilson

Help-negation is expressed behaviorally by the refusal or avoidance of available help and cognitively by the inverse relationship between self-reported symptoms of psychological distress and help-seeking intentions. The current study is part of a larger multi-cite research program developed and led by the first author. It examines the association between suicidal ideation and intentions to seek help from friends, family and professional mental health sources in a sample of 302 Australian university students. Participants were 77.5% female and aged from 18-25 years old, with 85.4% aged 21 years or younger. Higher levels of suicidal ideation were related to lower help-seeking …

An Analysis Of Desegregation Policy And Disparities In Faculty Salary And Workload At An Historically Black And Predominantly White Institutions In Maryland, Robert T. Palmer, Kimberly A. Griffin Dec 2009

An Analysis Of Desegregation Policy And Disparities In Faculty Salary And Workload At An Historically Black And Predominantly White Institutions In Maryland, Robert T. Palmer, Kimberly A. Griffin

Robert T. Palmer, PhD

Although ambiguity exists regarding how states must respond to the mandates of Fordice to dismantle dual systems of education in previously segregated states, several scholars note Fordice should manifest itself in the enhancement of public Black colleges. Responding to Fordice, the state of Maryland entered into an agreement with the Office of Civil Rights (OCR) to make its Black colleges comparable with their White counterparts. While Maryland claims that it has satisfied its agreement with OCR, findings of this study challenge this assertion. Data from AAUP, University System of Maryland [USM], and the Morgan State Office of Institutional research show …

Iccs 2009 European Report. Civic Knowledge, Attitudes And Engagement Among Lower Secondary School Students In Tweenty-Four European Countries, Wolfram Schulz

Dr Wolfram Schulz

The International Civic and Citizenship Education Study (ICCS) studied the ways in which countries prepare their young people to undertake their roles as citizens. ICCS was based on the premise that preparing students for citizenship involves helping them develop relevant knowledge and understanding and form positive attitudes toward being a citizen and participating in activities related to civics and citizenship. These notions were elaborated in the ICCS assessment framework (Schulz, Fraillon, Ainley, Losito, & Kerr, 2008).

Popularizing Achievement: The Role Of An Hbcu In Supporting Academic Success For Underprepared Black Males, Robert T. Palmer, Phd, Ryan J. Davis, Dina C. Maramba, Phd

Robert T. Palmer, PhD

Both predominantly White institutions (PWIs) and historically Black colleges and universities (HBCUs) are experiencing low academic persistence rates among Black males. While researchers have focused on factors facilitating the retention and persistence for Black males at PWIs, a paucity of contemporary research has focused on the academic and social experiences of Black males at HBCUs. We used in-depth interview methods to investigate the academic and social experiences of 11 Black males, who entered a public HBCU through its remedial or developmental studies program and persisted to graduation. Although several themes emerged from this study, special attention was placed on the …
