Purpose of review: There is a growing awareness of the increase in non-AIDS-defining cancers (NADC) in the HIV-infected population. Cancer screening is one means of reducing morbidity and mortality, but such screening may have psychological consequences across those with high and low-risk results, such as increased anxiety, worry and potential behavior change like increased self-examination or medical follow-up. This review examines the literature on psychological consequences of screening for NADC in HIV-infected populations. Recent findings: Anal cancer is the only cancer type in which the psychological consequence of screening has been investigated in HIV-infected populations. Screening increases worry about anal …

The present study explored the relationship between emotion identification skill (EIS) and friendships in adolescence. Students from five Australian high schools completed questionnaires annually from Grade 8 to Grade 12 including subjective measures of EIS and a peer-based objective measure of social functioning (e.g., friendship nominations). The total sample of participants was 795 (406 males; 389 females) with 468 (225 males; 243 females) completing questionnaires in Grade 12. EIS in early adolescence was predictive of friendships for females in late adolescence. This presentation preliminarily examines the effectiveness of campus-wide diversity initiatives through the Office of the Assistant Provost for Diversity at the College at Brockport, State University of New York. Effectiveness will be measured by survey item responses and institutional data. Student perception data was obtained through item responses on the 2008 and 2011 National Survey of Student Engagement (NSSE) survey and SUNY Student Opinion Survey (SOS). The College's institutional research department collected the institutional data that is examined (e.g., enrollment diversity). There has been an explosion in the number of health-related smartphone applications, or apps, available for download. These products nowinclude apps concerning concussion. From April to August 2011, at least seven concussion-related apps were released. The primary focus of these apps is assessment at the time of injury. One exception to this trend is Psychological Assessment Resources' (PAR) Concussion Recognition & Response: Coach & Parent Version.

Extract: The reconstruction of the modern university is under way, and it extends beyond Massively Open Online Courses (MOOCs). Just as the United Nations Human Settlements Program (UN-Habitat) has re-imagined urban spaces in Minecraft (Mojang, 2011) through the block by block initiative (blockbyblock.org), so too have educators re-imagined the space and meaning of the University Campus. This chapter presents the potential of Minecraft to help students and professors re-think university spaces and university education by presenting a detailed case study of the integration of the standard, unmodified release of Minecraft operating in creative mode into an experimental university class.

Out-of-level testing is an underused strategy for addressing the needs of students who score in the extremes, and when used wisely, it could provide educators with a much more accurate picture of what students know. Out-of-level testing has been shown to be an effective assessment strategy with high-achieving students; however, out-of-level testing has not been shown to work well with low-achieving students. This article provides a brief history of out-of-level testing, along with guidelines for using it.

Do firms demand more skilled workers in a slack labor market? We use a new database of job vacancy postings, containing a near-universe of electronic posts in U.S. metro areas, collected by the firm Burning Glass over the period 2010-2013. We find evidence of upskilling – firms demanding more skilled workers – when the local unemployment rate is higher, i.e., in places where the recovery following the Great Recession was slower. Our estimates imply that firms demand three-quarters of a year more schooling on average in a large recession compared to a boom. We find that at least two-thirds of …

This paper describes how public schools experience competition from private schools in the context of a low-income country: Nepal. I argue that experiencing competitive pressures is a necessary starting point for public schools to feel the need to initiate competitive reforms. I use qualitative analysis to illuminate how the experience of competition is linked to school and community characteristics, and principal perceptions. I find that there are key temporal and demographic dimensions that determine the public school’s experience of competition and their ability to respond with reforms. The field of school counseling is becoming increasingly evidence-based and results-driven. As a way to help Massachusetts’ schools develop school counseling programs, the Massachusetts School Counselors Association created the Massachusetts Accountability Report Card (MARC). We are school counseling interns at TechBoston Academy, a Boston Public School. Over the course of the 2010-2011 school year, we measured the effectiveness of our interventions and compiled them into a “MARC Jr.” The information we will present is a review of our MARC Jr., which focused on our school counseling curriculum for 11th grade students.

Commercial dog health programs in Australian Indigenous communities are a relatively recent occurrence. Health promotion for these programs is an even more recent development, and lacks data on effective practices. This paper analyses 38 resources created by veterinary-community partnerships in Indigenous communities, to 71 resources available through local veterinary service providers. On average, community-produced resources used significantly more of the resource area as image, more imagery as communicative rather than decorative images, larger fonts and smaller segments of text and used images of people with a range of skin tones.
