Facing The Interface: Evolving Practices For User-Centered Teaching And Learning, Ronda Wery, Kate Crane, Carly Finseth, Ana Krahmer

Facing the Interface: Evolving Practices for User-Centered Teaching and Learning: Interface is communication, functioning as the bridge between messenger, message, and audience. However, those who manage the interface also manage communication, creating a power imbalance within learning environments. Recognizing and interrogating power dynamics within a course interface and distributing power among interface designers, teachers, and students can enhance the communication situation to support a more participatory writing classroom. This panel considers how classroom spaces and technologies serve as interfaces that mediate classroom communication between instructors and students by examining interfaces for online class discussions, modes for syllabi delivery, interactivity of …

If there’s one thing that writing instructors are known for it’s innovation. Compositionists, because of our connection between academia and industry, the humanistic and the technical, the creative and the practical, are often some of the first to explore and adopt new technologies. In this review essay, I introduce how games and digital technologies can help our students “make” new thing. Understanding how games can link with literary practices, multimodal composition, creativity, problem solving, critical thinking, and more can help researchers in rhetoric and composition make important contributions to our field: Make games with the knowledge of what actually works …

The Arrows In Our Backs: Lessons Learned Trying To Change The Engineering Curriculum, Steven Villachica, Anthony Marker, Donald Plumlee, Linda Huglin, Amy Chegash

Published research has provided a robust set of documented tools and techniques for transforming individual engineering courses in ways that use evidence-based instructional practices. Many engineering faculty are already aware of these practices and would like to use them. However, they still face significant implementation barriers. The E2R2P effort addresses the question: How can successes in engineering education research translate into widespread instructional practice?
This poster session will describe hard-won lessons the E2R2P team has learned as it begins its third year attempting such curricular change.
Lesson 1: “Wonder workshops” and visible course redesigns don’t produce curricular change.
Lesson 2: …

In this assignment, students in upper-division Adolescent Literature and Children’s Literature classes contributed to Wikipedia articles about the books and authors covered in the courses. Drawing on the pedagogical scholarship that demonstrates the benefits of collaborative writing and the importance of learning a “community of practice”, the assignment asked students to edit live Wikipedia articles along with pseudonymous editors from around the world and learn the expectations of the online encyclopedia’s writing community. Over the semester, the students developed in-depth research skills, basic wiki editing skills, complex summarizing skills, and an appreciation for the constructed nature of knowledge. The students …

Authenticity In Academic Development: The Myth Of Neutrality, Gail Rathbun, Nancy Turner
Authenticity In Academic Development: The Myth Of Neutrality, Gail Rathbun, Nancy Turner
Gail A. Rathbun
Academic developers are often positioned as intermediaries who wield value-neutral tools—language, models, and techniques—in service of decidedly non-neutral institutional goals. We challenge the value of perpetuating the ideal of the neutrality of academic developers and their tools by examining the ways in which our resources and approaches produce imbalances of control, power, and authority in a consulting relationship. We suggest that the values embedded within the practices of academic development lead developers, and the people they help, to act inauthentically. By recognizing the improbability of neutrality in academic development work, the authors seek to open the way to constructive reflection, …
Igniting And Nurturing The Next Generation Of Stem Talent, Innovation And Leadership, By Design, Stephanie Pace Marshall
Igniting And Nurturing The Next Generation Of Stem Talent, Innovation And Leadership, By Design, Stephanie Pace Marshall
Stephanie Pace Marshall, Ph.D.
Regrettably, most American students experience STEM learning as an exclusive, individual, theoretical and “formulaic” enterprise. By decoupling STEM education from the human experience, we have distorted the essential nature of the scientific enterprise and advanced instrumentalist and utilitarian rationales for pursuing STEM careers—global economic superiority and technological competition.

Impact Of Scaffolding Characteristics And Study Quality On Learner Outcomes In Stem Education: A Meta-Analysis, Brian Belland, Andrew Walker, M. Olsen, Heather Leary
Heather Leary, Ph.D.
This paper employs meta-analysis to determine the impact of scaffold characteristics and study and assessment instrument quality on cognitive student outcomes in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics education at the K-12, college, graduate, and adult levels. Studies were coded for necessary information for effect size calculation, contextual information, threats to internal and external validity, and assessment instrument validity and reliability. Results indicate (a) scaffolding positively impacts student learning (g = 0.53), (b) studies with zero threats to internal validity had lower effect sizes than studies with two threats, (c) studies with one threat to external validity had higher effect sizes …

Engineering Education Research To Practice (E²R2p): Nsf Grant 1037808, Steven Villachica, Donald Plumlee, Linda Huglin, Drew Borresen
Linda Huglin
The E²R2P team employs a unique interdisciplinary approach to facilitate faculty adoption of research-based educational strategies across the engineering curriculum. As part of a "Sounding Board" of potential adopters, faculty will provide guidance, review components of redesigned courses, and participate in a series of workshops highlighting a variety of problem- and project-based instructional strategies1, 2.
A "Test Bed" will act as a venue for the visible redesign of existing courses in ways that employ authentic learning and assessment activities--where students do real-world engineering in the classroom. The redesigned courses will also help students inbound into their community of …

This paper describes how to use multimedia effectively in online courses aimed at adult audiences who have lower internet visual literacy. This paper will help faculty and others who develop online courses for adults to understand key principles for using multimedia to increase engagement and learning, reduce distraction, and take cognitive load limits and student internet visual literacy into account.
Using Mobile Devices To Extend The Classroom, Chris Haskell
Using Mobile Devices To Extend The Classroom, Chris Haskell
Chris Haskell
The popularity, power, and availability of mobile devices make them powerful tools in the hands of millennial learners. Many teens and preteens are currently using cell phones and mobile devices daily to communicate. When combined with popular social networking tools, iPods, handheld devices and mobile phones can support traditional instruction. This session will outline the benefits to using mobile devices and social networking sites together.

As we develop instructional systems using Second Life and other virtual worlds, learners find droning lectures, stale slide presentations, and instructional methodologies that are 10 years behind the current thinking. This session will discuss and demonstrate learning by doing in proxy-based learning environments using constructivist and social learning theory approaches to teaching in Second Life and other virtual environments. Participants should bring laptops with Second Life to participate in demonstrations.

This session will identify critical factors and challenges associated with utilizing existing resources as well as producing and disseminating personal and classroom web-based video. The presenter will discuss and demonstrate the process of creating and publishing persistent video resources online including technical requirements, norms, and current levels of usage. At the University level, Haskell uses web-based video to supplement instruction and promote student reflection. Utilizing Internet-based video as a persistent resource, Mr. Haskell was able to increase interest, bolster recruitment and participation, and secure school support for his high school percussion program. Using web-based video, the Reno high school promoted …

We begin our presentation with an overview of Google Tools and the benefits of using them in your classroom. We will discuss methods to increase student access to information, decrease workloads, and create collaborative opportunities. With the current economic times, budgets are feeling the strain, as are teachers and faculty in Higher Education settings. With web 2.0 tools, specifically Google Tools, we are empowered to use the technology to decrease our budgets, create a paperless environment, and introduce collaborative learning environments into our curriculum.
Our research serves to legitimize teachers in order to empower them to encourage our digital natives …
