Teachers With Passion: Teaching In A Distressed Educational Environment, Professor Ben C Osisioma Oct 2011

Teachers With Passion: Teaching In A Distressed Educational Environment, Professor Ben C Osisioma

Prof Ben Chuka Osisioma

Passion is great enthusiasm, very strong emotion, a willingness to sacrifice. Men and women with passion outpace themselves as they go beyond mere talent, to leave their impact on society. Nigerian education needs teachers with passion – men and women with fire in their bones, impatient for lasting and enduring results. Such extra-ordinary pedagogues are people who will give themselves as ministers and missionaries in the temple of education.

The Relationship Development And Learning Organization Dimensions., Yuhfen Diana H. Wu, Connie K. Haley Dr.

Diana H. Wu

This research examined the relationship among learning organization dimensions, leadership development, employee development, and their interactions with two demographic variables (gender and ethnicity) in the context of libraries. The researchers conducted a multivariate analysis of the variance to assess the differences by leadership training groups (low training hours vs. high training hours), or by gender; and by workplace training groups (low vs. high), or by ethnicity (white vs. all others) on a linear combination of the seven dimensions of the learning organization. A conclusive summary is provided along with contributive discussion. Implications and contributions to librarians are discussed in addition …

A Living Lecture For Lifelong Learning, John A. Henschke Edd Aug 2011

A Living Lecture For Lifelong Learning, John A. Henschke Edd

John A. Henschke

The author is seeking to improve the lecture, by adding numerous techniques with it to engage the learners more actively in the learning process, supporting it with the theories of large group meetings and andragogy, and naming it ‘a living lecture for lifelong learning’. The process of the living lecture for lifelong learning is described as follows. Before the presentation/lecture, which the leader has prepared on a predetermined topic prior to the time of its audible delivery, the audience may be divided into four teams and be asked to serve as listening teams. Each team respectively, listens to a five …

The Scenario Of A Learning Society Model Toward Promoting A Positive Paradigm Shif For Communities, John A. Henschke Edd, Suwithida Charungkaittikul Phd

John A. Henschke

This study uses a prospective qualitative approach. The Ethnographic Delphi Futures Research (EDFR) technique is used to propose a learning society model. The data include a review of the peer-reviewed literature, a field study visit and observation of five best practices communities in Thailand, in-depth interviews to gain experts’ perspectives, mini-Delphi techniques questionnaires, focus group discussions, and model evaluation. Qualitative data were transcribed and analyzed using content-analysis. Forty-two individuals (e.g., policy makers, practitioners from public and private agencies, educational personnel, and community leaders) were involved in the data collection effort. Results revealed essential elements for development of a learning society …

Andragogy And Transformative Learning: Imigration Meets Ratioalism In College Classrooms, John A. Henschke Edd Aug 2011

Andragogy And Transformative Learning: Imigration Meets Ratioalism In College Classrooms, John A. Henschke Edd

John A. Henschke

Although Andragogy and Transformative learning (TL) are highly prized concepts in Adult Education, many scholars are critical of their principles and often confusing strategies. While educators immerse themselves quite successfully in the nuances of theory, they remain puzzled over how to apply them in the classroom. A robust and dynamic approach that can capture the meaningfulness of these ageless paradigms is greatly needed. Therefore in this session we will identify some of the illusive elements that obfuscate the application of Andragogy and TL in university classrooms – undergraduate, graduate, doctoral and post-doctoral.

Susan Miller Dorsey (1857-1946): Trailblazer For Women School Superintendents, Samuel J. Smith, Joseph Steven Strickland

Samuel James Smith

Though women are increasingly breaking the glass ceiling into the position of school superintendent, the profession continues to be predominately occupied by men. More historical biographs of successful female superintendents may encourage women to pursue the role. To that end, this study examined the impact of a progressive-era trailblazer for women in educational leadership, Susan Miller Dorsey, superintendent of Los Angeles City Schools from 1920 to 1929. Two critical questions were addressed: What factors influenced Dorsey? Can her experiences in administration reveal any critical influences for present-day female teachers who pursue administrative positions?

Tracking The Use Of Leed® In Facilities For Higher Education, Shannon M. Chance Jan 2011

Tracking The Use Of Leed® In Facilities For Higher Education, Shannon M. Chance

Shannon M. Chance

America’s 4391 institutions of higher learning own roughly 240,000 buildings according to The Carnegie Foundation for the Advancement of Teaching (2009) and the United States Green Building Council [USGBC] (n.d.). Most of these buildings’ designs reflect a time when energy was cheap and material abundant. Throughout the past century, building designs frequently ignored their surroundings, usurped energy at appalling rates, and did little to teach inhabitants respect for the environment (Fox, 2007; McDonough & Braungart 2002; Orr, 2007). As our colleges renovate and expand their facilities today, however, their activities reflect a decided shift in values. Over the past few …

Adaptive Leadership, Fact Or Buzz Words?, Derek J. Ambrose Dr

Derek J Ambrose Dr

Recently I came across several conversations where the colleagues were discussing the virtues of adaptive leadership. Initially I froze with fear on account of here we go again on another buzz phrase conjured up to sell meaningless outcomes, make someone wealthy, and again add confusion to the leadership debate.

A Southern Progressive: M. A. Cassidy And The Lexington Schools, 1886-1928, Richard E. Day

Richard E. Day

The 42-year career of M. A. Cassidy exemplifies the transition of public school leadership in Kentucky from non-educators who held religious-political ideologies to professional progressive educators who sought to make Kentucky schools more efficient through expertise and scientific management. This concept was fully adopted in Section 183 of the Kentucky Constitution (1891) which required the General Assembly to “provide for an efficient system of common schools throughout the state.” Confident that professional educators were best suited to devise solutions to social problems, and justified by the twin notions of equality of educational opportunity and meritocracy, Cassidy was part of a …

Madalienne F. Peters

The report concludes with suggestions for future research. Much of the current research details the successes of high school graduates in attending and completing post-secondary education, but there exists a need for longitudinal studies tracking students from an early age, through their elementary, middle and high school experience, and on to their college attendance and careers. In comparing schools that have implemented strides toward College-Prep-For-All policies versus those that remain status quo, what possible differences develop for students and the local economy? Furthermore, how can the North Bay glean aspects of successful college- and career-ready programs for their schools? The …

Chinese Women Administrators In Higher Education: Developing Leadership Throughout Life, Susan R. Madsen

Susan R. Madsen

The development of leadership has been a critical concern of many organizational leaders in various sectors (public, private, and social) across the globe. To better understand this complex phenomenon, researchers (e.g., Bass, 1990; Bennis, 1989) have been conducting leadership studies for decades in various disciplines (e.g., education, management, psychology). Yet, studies in these disciplines on developing women leaders are just emerging as an important focus of researchers and practitioners in many countries throughout the world. In many regions it has become evident that the process of developing women leaders is particularly multifaceted and challenging. There are numerous complexities inherent in …

Chinese Women Developing Leadership: Case Studies In Higher Education, Susan R. Madsen

Susan R. Madsen

Organizational leaders in various sectors (public, private, and social) across the globe often acknowledge the importance of preparing both men and women for strong, competent leadership. To assist these organizations, researchers (e.g., Bass, 1990; Bennis, 1989) have been conducting leadership studies for decades in various disciplines (e.g., education, management, psychology) to better understand this complex phenomenon. Kowske and Anthony (2007), Ardichvili and Manderscheid (2008), and Madsen (2009) have also highlighted the importance of studying leadership development within the human resource development (HRD) arena in the U.S. and beyond. Yet, studies in these disciplines on developing women leaders are just emerging …

Do I Belong Here? Exploring Immigrant College Student Responses On The Seru Survey Sense Of Belonging/Satisfaction Factor, Michael J. Stebleton, Ron Huesman, A. Kuzhabekova

Michael J. Stebleton

The immigrant college student population will likely continue to increase. This exploratory study addresses the questions: To what extent does sense of belonging/satisfaction of recent immigrant college students differ from non-immigrant college students? Do perceived self-ratings of belonging vary by immigrant generations? This research draws on a new extensive data source, the Student Experience in the Research University (SERU) survey. Survey data from the 2009 SERU is based on the responses from 55,433 undergraduate students from six-large research institutions from across the United States. Findings suggest that immigrant students’ perception of their sense of belonging and satisfaction is significantly lower …

Strategic By Design: Iterative Approaches To Educational Planning, Shannon M. Chance Dec 2009

Strategic By Design: Iterative Approaches To Educational Planning, Shannon M. Chance

Shannon M. Chance

oday’s tumultuous economic and political conditions require universities to adapt—fast. Leaders must attend to unforeseen crises, events, and opportunities in ways that align with their core missions, promote their universities’ continued existence, and help achieve disparate goals (Rowley, Lujan, and Dolence 1997). Good planning and good plans involve iteration; simple cause-and-effect thinking is no longer enough. Universities can—and frequently do—suffer when they use linear, mechanistic thinking (Presley and Leslie 1999; Rowley, Lujan, and Dolence 1998). Leaders can make too many erroneous assumptions about the future. And, when users view strategic plans as fixed road maps, they often fail to recognize …

An International Capsule Of The History And Philosophy Of Andragogy, John A. Henschke Edd Dec 2009

An International Capsule Of The History And Philosophy Of Andragogy, John A. Henschke Edd

John A. Henschke

Andragogy was first authored by Alexander Kapp (1833), a German high school teacher. He asserted andragogy as education in the man's age including self reflection, and educating the character as primary values in human life. The most cogently knowledgeable and articulate of all scholars that have researched and practiced in andragogy in Savicevic (2006a). After writing extensively internationally on andragogy for 50 years, he observed that since his first visit to the USA in 1966, up through 2006, tracing andragogy on USA universities is that there had not been a single serious study on adult education and learning that did …
