This paper takes a large-scale social perspective in describing a national project in Australia that was premised on local school communities working together and contributing ideas for the benefit of their students, and potentially, the whole country. The project was intended to improve schools’ capacity for educating boys, and in the long-term, the learning outcomes of under-performing boys, using evidence-based and action research methods. KidsMatter (KM) is an Australian national primary school mental health promotion, prevention and early intervention initiative. It uses a whole-school approach and a framework built around the four components of: Positive school community; Social emotional learning; Parenting support and education; and Early intervention for students experiencing mental health difficulties. It was recently trialed in 100 schools across Australia during 2007 and 2008. This report presents findings from the evaluation of this pilot phase, which examined the implementation, engagement, and impact aspects of the of the initiative for schools, teachers, parents, and students.

The use of comparative research by social work dates back to the profession's origins. However, its nature has changed over time, reflecting the profession's changing contexts. With the globalisation of social work, professional practice has expanded outside of the profession's western origins to encompass cross-worldview settings. Each contextual expansion has meant a greater complexity of the comparative research factors to be considered.
