Living In Question, Cynthia Rothschild
Living In Question, Cynthia Rothschild
Occasional Paper Series
September 11 and the following months found Rothschild's students asking: "Why is there suffering?" "What has real value for me and for my society?" and, most resoundingly, "Is there a God?" She had few answers. The value that came to the forefront in her post-September 11 teaching was the value of living in question.

Spirituality, Religion, And Pursuing Purpose: Connecting African American Males’ Educational Pursuits To A Higher Power, Brian L. English Phd
The Journal of Faith, Education, and Community
As Black men continually face challenges while seeking to graduate from college, researchers and educational leaders have continuously sought ways to understand and remedy the issues. Spirituality and religion have been found to have positive influences on Black students’ success in college. This study was designed to explore the role of spirituality and religion in the lives of Black men at a large research-oriented institution in Texas. The article examines how spirituality and religion among Black undergraduate men influenced their ability to persist. Interviews were conducted with 10 Black undergraduate men who identified as being spiritual and/or religious. The findings …

Problem-Based Learning And Two Studies Of The Journal Of Religion And Film: Self-Sacrifice And Music, Ken Derry
Journal of Religion & Film
This article offers a case study for using problem-based learning (PBL) in a religion and film course. PBL is an open-ended, experiential approach to teaching, which requires students to engage with a real world problem in groups. While many university classes are based on a lecture format and variations of that format, PBL asks students to take greater ownership of their learning. The problem drives what students will learn, how they will learn it, and what they produce to assess that learning. Students in a fourth-year PBL class at the University of Toronto Mississauga were given the following problem: analyze …

Using The News To Enhance Critical Thinking And Engagement In Middle And High School Students, Jessica Walters
Journal of Catholic Education
This article describes the author’s adaptation of Gallagher’s (2009) Article of the Week approach to teaching students literacy skills using current events. The use of this unique instructional routine within the context of a Catholic middle school language arts classroom has proven successful for supporting students in developing critical literacy and an understanding of moral leadership by examining world events from a Catholic worldview.
War Of The Worlds: Music And Cosmological Battles In The Balinese Cremation Procession, Michael B. Bakan
War Of The Worlds: Music And Cosmological Battles In The Balinese Cremation Procession, Michael B. Bakan
Yale Journal of Music & Religion
Abstract
This article explores processional action as a form of cosmological intervention in Hindu-Balinese cremation processions, focusing on the multiple and intersecting functions of a particular type of Balinese instrumental music ensemble: the gamelan beleganjur. It explores the alternately “enlivening and protective aspects” (DeVale 1990, 62) that underlie the use of beleganjur music in the ngaben, or cremation ritual, showing how beleganjur’s sonic power and rhythmic drive serve to combat malevolent spirit beings, strengthen and inspire processional participants in their efforts to meet challenging ritual obligations, and grant courage to the souls of deceased individuals embarking on their …
Students With Developmental Disabilities In Catholic Schools: Examples In Primary And Secondary Settings, Meghan M. Burke, Megan M. Griffin
Students With Developmental Disabilities In Catholic Schools: Examples In Primary And Secondary Settings, Meghan M. Burke, Megan M. Griffin
Journal of Catholic Education
While some Catholic schools include students with disabilities, few serve students with significant support needs. This paper offers two distinct models of including students with developmental disabilities in Catholic schools at the primary and secondary level. Describing programs at Children of Peace School and Notre Dame College Prep School, this paper discusses each program’s history, funding, student composition, programming, transition supports, and outcomes. Implications of these models are discussed, as well as the need for further inclusion of students with disabilities in Catholic and other private schools.

Jainism And Nonviolence: From Mahavira To Modern Times, Lana E. Sims
The Downtown Review
The research contained in this paper focuses on the religion of Jainism, its main principle of ahimsa, or nonviolence, and how that philosophy has evolved over the years, eventually inspiring today’s nonviolent movements. First, a look will be taken at the origin of Jainism, with a brief explanation of its most important principles and beliefs. Then, ahimsa is explained as it has been traditionally perceived by Jains. The recent evolution of the meaning of ahimsa and its impact on modern nonviolence movements is discussed, with a focus on the influence of second-generation Jains in the United States on the …
The Influence Of Setting On Supreme Court Religious Expression Decisions, Joseph J. Hemmer Jr.
The Influence Of Setting On Supreme Court Religious Expression Decisions, Joseph J. Hemmer Jr.
Communication and Theater Association of Minnesota Journal
The First Amendment prohibits any establishment of religion, a dicta that has been applied in an apparently inconsistent manner by the Supreme Court when called upon to evaluate various forms of verbal and nonverbal religious communication. Court decisions have approved religious prayers and displays in government settings. When such exercises and displays were introduced to the public school academic setting, the Court chose to disallow the practice. An examination of judicial opinions reveals that justices recognize three factors inherent to the academic setting which justify the apparently contradictory decisions. Because of the captive nature of the audience, the presence of …
“Does Jesus Want Us To Be Poor?” Student Perspectives Of The Religious Program At A Cristo Rey Network School, Ursula S. Aldana
“Does Jesus Want Us To Be Poor?” Student Perspectives Of The Religious Program At A Cristo Rey Network School, Ursula S. Aldana
Journal of Catholic Education
The structure of Catholic schools improves achievement by providing multiple opportunities for face-to-face interaction, the development of meaningful relationships between students, teachers, and other members of the school community, and a shared set of beliefs among all school members (Bryk, Lee, & Holland, 1993). Despite a substantiating body of research for this assertion, few empirical studies exist on how the religious program might impact the intrapersonal and interpersonal development of students. The Cristo Rey Network (CRN) of schools was developed in response to the material realities of students and families living in Chicago (Kearney, 2006). The leaders of the network, …

Big Gay Church: Religion, Religiosity, And Visual Culture, James H. Sanders Iii, Kimberly Cosier, Mindi Rhoades, Courtnie Wolfgang, Melanie G. Davenport
Journal of Social Theory in Art Education
Five academics explore their performed occupations of the National Art Education Association Annual Meetings. They have annually mounted Big Gay Church (BGC) services that deconstruct and question the ways visual culture, media representations, scriptural interpretations, and religious teaching have constructed (at times harmful) depictions of lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer and questioning (LGBTQ2) subjects. This essay recounts how co-authors have drawn on their multiple experiences with/in churches to play with religious rituals and narratives in ways that queerly comment on the damage or support organized religions offer LGBTQ2 students and educators.
The Pretence Of Western Religion And Education In Nigeria: A Sociological Perspective., E. Okpilike
The Pretence Of Western Religion And Education In Nigeria: A Sociological Perspective., E. Okpilike
Academic Leadership: The Online Journal (2003-2012)
The main aim of the missionary education was to reach Christianity and thus convert all those who came within the four walls of the mission house. The British colonial Missions set up norms of religious education that progressively colonized the converts. Religious education primarily meant carrying out civic duties which enabled Nigerians to adopt the Western culture at the expense of their own. Prior to the coming of Western religions and education, Nigerians were very religious and also functional in their education. They acknowledged the presence of God in whatever they did. Their religion therefore cut across their entire lives …
Dangerous Liaisons: Non-Western Religious Minority Groups And American Public Education, Steve Charbonneau
Dangerous Liaisons: Non-Western Religious Minority Groups And American Public Education, Steve Charbonneau
Academic Leadership: The Online Journal (2003-2012)
Public education and so many institutions charged with serving the public are struggling to serve cultural minority groups who see the world and interact with it in ways quite foreign to mainstream America. A lack of knowledge, on the part of public institutions, has led to the further alienation of certain minority subgroups and has made the public institutions that serve them ineffective. Increasing institutional knowledge of cultural minority groups is one of the critical steps American pubic educators must take towards cultural competency (Hoffman, 2004).
Personal Faith And Public Religious Neutrality: A Brief History Of The Separation Of Church And State For School Leaders, Peter Miller, Engel Max
Personal Faith And Public Religious Neutrality: A Brief History Of The Separation Of Church And State For School Leaders, Peter Miller, Engel Max
Academic Leadership: The Online Journal (2003-2012)
We are often told “keep the faith” or “have faith” but rarely are we told what that means. Psychologist and educational philosopher Sharon Daloz Parks states that faith is the way we make meaning from our life’s experiences: faith results when “human beings… compose a sense of the ultimate reality and then stake [their] lives on that sense of things” (Parks, 2000, p. 20). Faith is both a dynamic force as well as a stabilizing and grounding entity; it organizes how the world is perceived, acted upon, and interpreted; faith is not synonymous with religion, belief, or spirituality. Obviously something …

Can Business Leaders Learn From Leaders Of Today’S Megachurches?, Peter A. Maresco
Academic Leadership: The Online Journal (2003-2012)
In 2005, Malcolm Gladwell, author of the best selling books, The Turning Point: How Little Things Can Make a Big Difference (Little, Brown & Company, 2000) and Blink: The Power of Thinking Without Thinking (Little, Brown & Company, 2005), wrote an article titled The Cellular Church that appeared in The New Yorker Magazine (9/12/05). The article retells the story of the beginnings and the growth of Pastor Rick Warren’s Saddleback Church located in the Saddleback Valley of Orange County, California. In re-reading the article I found an interesting quote attributed to Jack Welch, the former chairman of General Electric and …

God, The Taboo Topic In Art Education, Terry Barrett, Valora Blackson, Vicki Daiello, Megan Goffos
Journal of Social Theory in Art Education
A serendipitous match of this journal's call for imagery "that lies outside art educators' accepted sphere"-"out of site/ sight/ cite" - and a (too) rare discussion among art educators talking about God within a secular classroom prompts this article. Concepts of God are generally withheld from the site of public school art classrooms in the United States; many teachers express wariness and fear of bringing artists' sights of God into their public school art rooms, although God and Gods are a frequent subject for artists through time and across place. Further, the topic of God is rarely cited in art …
