Nigeria is one of the world’s most endowed nations, with abundant human and natural resources. These resources are located in all the states of the federation and exist in commercial quantities (see Ajibewa, 2006:261). The proceeds from these resources have been disproportionately distributed to the disadvantage of the poor population while through the paraphernalia of the presidium of government, the allocation of resources has been done to generously favour the ruling and business elites as well as their cronies. This situation has given rise to the grave issue of inequality in the country. The availability of these resources notwithstanding, Nigeria …

The importance of Mathematics transcends all definitions and the prosperity of any country depends on the volume and quality of Mathematics offered in its school system. Obe (1996) conceptualises Mathematics as the master and servant of most disciplines and thus, a source of enlightenment and understanding of the universe. He further opines that without it, the understanding of national problems would be superficial. Graeber and Weisman (1995) agree that Mathematics helps the individual to understand his/her environment and to give accurate account of the physical phenomena around him/her. To this end, Setidisho (2001) submits that no other subject forms a …

Education in the opinion of (Akindutire, 2010) is regarded by many as the key that unlocks the development of personal and national potentials of individuals including their rights and powers. The major purposes to which the results of assessment could be put were diagnosis, evaluation, guidance, grading prediction, and selection. In Nigeria, it is unfortunate that the results of many examinations have been used almost exclusively for grading and promotion exercises and inevitably there has been a neglect of diagnosis, guidance and evaluation although considerable informal use of assessment for these purposes are made by teachers in the classroom.

Basic Social Values In Modern Nigerian School System, E. Okpilike

Academic Leadership: The Online Journal

A careful study of current event in modern Nigerian scene, religious institutions and of course all other sectors of the society clearly show that there is an unbalanced equation as regards the input and output of societal values in the school system. It is either there is a reduction of the necessary and compulsory societal values which must be introduced and imbibed in the school system or that there is a wanton disregard, disrespect, or negligence of the excellent societal values already introduced or made available to the Nigeria school system. In these two probabilities the society receives the blame …

The HIV-AIDS epidemic is perhaps one of the greatest challenges to countries of the world today. Since it was first diagnosed in 1981, it has become a significant threat to everybody throughout the world irrespective of gender and sexual orientation. The widespread of the disease especially in the African continent has become a major source of concern to government and non-governmental agencies and others concerned with curtailing the pandemic disease. In fact in hard hit areas of Africa, infection rate has been higher in teenage groups than that of adult (Hopkins, 2000). In 2008 alone, an estimated 3 million people …

Democracy is said to be consolidated when all parties and individuals operate freely in a competitive and transparent environment; where stakeholders are guided by the rule of law, fair play and respect for group and individual rights. In political systems that approximate the ideal of democracy, the vote and election are meaningful. Elections place some individuals in power and reject the claims of others. Elections most typically are retrospective judgments on the conduct of the person and party that has held power. Those who have given satisfaction are confirmed in the office, those who are held responsible for the poor …

The main aim of the missionary education was to reach Christianity and thus convert all those who came within the four walls of the mission house. The British colonial Missions set up norms of religious education that progressively colonized the converts. Religious education primarily meant carrying out civic duties which enabled Nigerians to adopt the Western culture at the expense of their own. Prior to the coming of Western religions and education, Nigerians were very religious and also functional in their education. They acknowledged the presence of God in whatever they did. Their religion therefore cut across their entire lives …

Academic Leadership: The Online Journal

The transformation of societies to capitalism has introduced complexity into activities of man. Once capitalism transformed the traditional way of life, factors such as effectiveness of competition, freedom of movement and the absence of any system of social security compelled the state to assume responsibility for the protection and welfare of the individual (Jacoby, 1973:147). To help the state achieve this, it has become imperative to have a seeming standing power evolving from, but placing itself above, the society. Such power that alienates itself more and more from the society is being exercised on behalf of the state by certain …

Privatisation has become the current wave moving across both developing and developed nations all over the world. This is so in order to promote efficient allocation and management of resources. In Nigeria, like most other developing countries, the ownership and control of key public utilities have virtually been the responsibility of the government since independence in 1960. The case for government control of public utilities, such as electricity, telecommunication, gas, water supply and air transportation is based on the argument that basic goods and services need to be provided to the citizenry at affordable prices, and also that government needs …

Analysis Of The Educational Facilities In Southern Universities In Nigeria, O.L. Oyeniyi

Academic Leadership: The Online Journal

The educational system in Nigeria has witnessed tremendous expansion within the last two decades in the midst of limited resources and dilapidated educational facilities. The education sector has not enjoyed a fair share of the total recurrent and capital expenditure of the federal Government, despite the 26% recommended by the United Nations Educational Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO).The high priority accorded education according to Longe (1985), has partly been due to the view of education as an investment.

The lecture method is probably the most prevalent and only method some university lecturers often employ in the training programs leading to the preparation of Nigerian graduates. In recent times the quality of graduates in Nigeria has necessitated a second look at this predominant method of preparation. Since the lecture method is predominantly teacher – centered and mostly leaves the learners as passive participants, only to take notes and probably ask questions after the lecture delivery if and when time permits, the need has arisen to look for alternative ways of graduates’ preparation that will be all inclusive. There is …

The Nigerian higher education has been accused of performing below expectation when judged from both internal and global benchmarks of quality of output, peaceful co-existence on campus, fair conduct of examination, amongst others. The nature of higher education is such that its students are seen by members of campus community as adults who have attained the age of taking full responsibility of their behaviours and students on their part see themselves as those set free from the encumbrances of family control and influences. Indeed the campus environment is one perceived as “everyman to himself”. Students’ relationship with teachers, fellow students, …

Dressing is an act of putting on clothes and usually a means of expressing our individuality. Thompson (2005) citing Kaiser (1997) opined that dressing is the total arrangement of all outward detectable modification of the body and all material objects added to it. The implication of this is that dressing which is an aspect of clothing is the external covering put on the body for different purposes. The way an individual dresses is a tangible expression of an individual’s unique value system. In recent time, there had been an urgent need for the understanding of and a planned framework for the introduction of the commercialization of knowledge production concept in our universities. Many dimensions to this need had been attempted. This include drawing up new course descriptions or revising the mix of the course subject portfolio. However, it is now becomes very obvious that such development requires a good deal more than just looking into specific course contents, or setting up an entrepreneurial centre and or introducing a course in entrepreneurial education as announced by Baridam (2009) during the 25th Convocation Ceremony …

These attempts can be summarized as follows: The defunct Western Region free primary education programme of 1955. The defunct Eastern Region Education of 1957. The federal Government National Universal Primary Education of 1976. Over the years, universal access to education has been the prime target for Nigeria, since the middle of the 1970s when the universal primary Education (UPE) scheme took off. Most Nigerian students learn English Language as a second Language (L2).They have acquired their mother tongues (L1) and are very proficient in them before entering the school. In most cases, many secondary school students do not have the opportunity to use English language at home. For such students, English Language learning and use is restricted to the classroom. Therefore, these students use their mother tongue more in the school environment, at home and for interpersonal relationships. These practices are negatively affecting the production of some sounds in English Language, which is the language of education, government, commerce and international communication.

The pride of educational system depends not just on the quantity but more importantly, on the quality of its products at all levels. The quality of the products in turn depends largely on the quality of the education diet that students receive in Secondary Schools and which is also dependent upon the standard of control that teachers and students enjoy. It has been observed that, the problem of adequate and effective quality control has been responsible for producing students who remain half-baked and could not assist the society in which they find themselves (Erinle & Abioye, 2003). The problem of …
