The Targeted Open Online Course (Tooc) Model, Credence Baker, James Gentry
Administrative Issues Journal
In an era of increasingly hyped Massive Open Online Courses (MOOCs) that seem to evoke feelings of both promise and peril for higher education, many institutions are struggling to find their niche among top-tier Ivy League schools offering courses to thousands of participants for free. While the effectiveness of MOOCs in terms of learning outcomes and student persistence is still unclear (see Daniel, 2012; Kirschner, 2012; and Jordan, 2013), one benefit of the trend are the innovative adaptations that smaller-sized, regional institutions have begun testing as alternative in-roads into the MOOC era. The Targeted Open Online Course (TOOC) model allowed …

Students' Competency -- The Intersection Of Didactics And Organisation Of Higher Education, Peter Slepcevic-Zach, Ph.D.
International Journal for Business Education
Output orientation in the realm of education has become a requirement for higher education that is now slowly starting to be manifested in its curricula. This raises the question: what competences students are supposed to develop in the course of their studies and how these competences can be developed. In a first step, this article will therefore deal with the notion of competence. The next step involves an analysis of the various approaches to didactics in higher education, which plays an important role in the promotion of students' competency as well as in the design of individual lesson plans and …
Beginning Teacher Support In Australia: Towards An Online Community To Augment Current Support, Nick Kelly, Shirley Reushle, Sayan Chakrabarty, Anna Kinnane
Beginning Teacher Support In Australia: Towards An Online Community To Augment Current Support, Nick Kelly, Shirley Reushle, Sayan Chakrabarty, Anna Kinnane
Australian Journal of Teacher Education
This paper describes opportunities to improve the current support provided to beginning teachers in Australia. It holds that there is a need for approaches that go beyond school-based induction and support. The paper presents data from a survey of beginning teachers in Queensland, with aims to determine current access to support and perceptions about gaps in support. It uses these findings alongside existing evidence to make arguments, that some beginning teachers are effectively unsupported and that universities have the potential to play a greater role in beginning teacher support. Further results are used to suggest guidelines for developing a national …

Curriculum, Marginalization, And The Professoriate, William L. White
Curriculum, Marginalization, And The Professoriate, William L. White
Journal of Inquiry and Action in Education
The author exposes the subtext on which education and particularly curriculum making is based by focusing on the notion that the professoriate has been marginalized within curriculum planning by an educational hegemony that utilizes the sorting and classification mechanisms present in schooling to co-opt the development of educational plans.
Organizational Culture, Knowledge Structures, And Relational Messages In Organizational Negotiation: A Systems Approach, Vincent P. Cavataio, Robert S. Hinck
Organizational Culture, Knowledge Structures, And Relational Messages In Organizational Negotiation: A Systems Approach, Vincent P. Cavataio, Robert S. Hinck
Journal of Collective Bargaining in the Academy
This study examines a recent bargaining process between the Faculty Association and Central Michigan University. Taking a systems approach, we began with the assumption that a healthy organizational culture produces negative feedback which can help keep participants at the bargaining table despite disagreement. However, if organizational members’ relationships are threatened, organizational culture unravels as destructive messages provide positive feedback to disrupt the system and make impasse more likely. To understand how an university’s culture is impacted during contract negotiations we examined messages published in a university student newspaper, transcripts from the local NPR station, CMU’s press releases, a Facebook page, …
Allocating Higher-Education Stimulus Funds In New Jersey: A Multiple-Streams Case Study, Michael W. Klein
Allocating Higher-Education Stimulus Funds In New Jersey: A Multiple-Streams Case Study, Michael W. Klein
Kentucky Journal of Higher Education Policy and Practice
This case study examines the public policy process in New Jersey and how it influenced the distribution of American Recovery and Reinvestment Act (ARRA) funds for higher education. New Jersey originally proposed to appropriate ARRA funds only to state-administered financial-aid programs in the FY2010 budget. Applying Kingdon’s (2003) public policy framework, this study explains how higher education advocates provided feedback, presented a successful alternative, and secured $39.6 million for public college and universities.
