We’ll start with our school’s motto, “Family, Love, Respect,” which is posted in nearly every hallway, office and gathering place in our school. We attempt to provide each student with a strong sense of each. Although ours is an alternative high school, filled with stories of trauma, neglect and despair, our students are resilient! Promoting student success in entry-level STEM courses is a continuing area of interest. While JCSU has made great strides in this area, in 2016, data began to show an increase in the DFW rates for key courses. The urban small university where these studies were conducted provides students with an online tutorial service. While the success of tutoring is well-documented, it is our perception that students do not utilize this resource as often or as effectively as they might. This project increased student utilization of online tutoring and improved participating students’ test and quiz grades.

Teaching Culturally and Linguistically Diverse International Students in Open or Online Learning Environments: A Research Symposium

Building on an earlier action research project looking at international student grades at an Ontario College, the researchers explored the impact of learning in an online learning environment on international student performance. The researchers asked: 1) Is there a significant difference in the average student grades (regardless of country of residence or origin) between online delivery and in-person delivery? 2) Is there a statistically significant difference in average student grades between delivery methods, based on country of origin or residence?; and 3) Is there a statistically significant difference in average student grades between domestic and international students, based on delivery? …

This session will describe a unique collaboration that resulted in development of a strategic research assignment design supported by relevant information literacy sessions. This effort stems from an existing relationship between research librarians and an instructor who was previously a graduate assistant in Research & Instruction Services and became an instructor of a general education course in Communication Sciences and Disorders. Through a grant-funded opportunity called CARLI Counts, I participated in in-person and online training, mentoring, and team projects which enabled me to do a small assessment of the use of Interlibrary Loan, Reference services, and a nursing database by students in selected Olivet Nazarene University School of Graduate and Continuing Studies programs. The purpose of the assessment was to see if outreach to faculty or course-integrated library instruction increased student use of resources—a behavior which correlates with student success in library research literature.

Although a 2-credit hour information literacy course had high enrollment, with multiple sections offered each year across several campuses, course completion rates were not as high as hoped. Originally designed for freshman or sophomores, many upper-level students were enrolling in the course because they needed the credit hours, not because of interest in the course content, and overall engagement with the course material was low. During the presentation, presenters will deliver methods used in designing a LibGuide that contains various assignments and research activities so that students gain an understanding of library research, critical thinking, evaluation skills, financial literacy, registration, ethics, and more. The presenter developed Student Success @ Limestone College LibGuide specifically for freshman students. The guide has been so popular it has been designated as a required tool in freshman day and online courses.

We explore how the dynamics of the tutor-tutee relationship influence student self- reliance, and ultimately course performance. We examine 333 tutor and tutee pairs at a student success center at a public, comprehensive, university of about 5,000 undergraduates in over 60 different courses during the spring of 2015. We find as frequency and quality of the interactions between tutor and tutees increase that the tutors increasingly foster independent study habits on the part of the tutees. The incorporation of independent study habits was then associated with better course outcomes. In other words, the development of a positive, sustained relationship by …
