In this article, we use the lens of Tinto’s (1987) separation and transition phases to reflect on lessons learned when moving classes with oral communication components from in-person to online. We believe that being mindful and intentional in how we include oral communication instruction, opportunities for improvement, and incorporating feedback can positively impact retention and persistence of students. First, we describe the timelines of events, then we connect Tinto’s essential features of effective retention programs to oral communication pedagogy, and finally offer resources and strategies for incorporating oral communication into courses.

This qualitative study examines the experiences of 10 male students of color attending HBCUs in southern states of the United States. Research has shown that Black men are attending college at a significantly disproportionate rate than white males, as well as their Black female counterparts. According to a report by the National Center for Education Statistics (NCES; 2010), the gender gap for enrollment between male and female Black students has increased significantly over the last 30 years. This research study examined the relationship between persistence to graduation within six years and selected variables including financial aid awarded, high school GPA, ACT composite scores, SAT combined scores, and first-year first-semester GPA. It is well documented in research literature that high school preparation, college entrance examinations, and freshman year academic performance play a significant role in degree completion; however, studies on the impact of financial aid have not been as abundant. The researchers developed the College Persistence – Financial Aid Coding Technique System (CP-FACTS) to explore the influences of finances on degree attainment.

This paper draws upon intertextuality to explore how an African American male adult learner uses his religious faith as a resource for persisting in an adult literacy program. Increased numbers of students are enrolling in online doctoral programs. Although students enroll for a variety of reasons, many do not persist to the dissertation phase. The results of this quantitative study can guide the development of retention strategies for students who are at risk of academic failure in doctoral programs.
