Impact Of Academic Golden Weekend Initiative On Academic Success For An Internal Medicine Clerkship, Elif S. Duran, Maria A. Alvarenga, Stephanie Onyechi, Jose E. Campo Maldonado
Research Colloquium
Background: COVID-19 precautions led to a change in the number of protected weekends for the UTRGV Internal Medicine Clerkship, going from 2 protected weekends to none. The aim of Academic Golden Weekends during a fully inpatient clerkship has been to maximize the student experience by providing enough time to balance all the necessary components of the student experience. Starting April 26, 2021, all cohorts completing their Internal Medicine Clerkship as third-year medical students had 3 protected weekends.
Methods: Two surveys were created to compare the pre-intervention and post-intervention cohorts. The surveys focused on student satisfaction regarding the time they had …

Teacher Education In The Arts Before, During, And After The Covid-19 Pandemic, Jake E. Knight
Teacher Education In The Arts Before, During, And After The Covid-19 Pandemic, Jake E. Knight
Undergraduate Student Research Internships Conference
The purpose of this research is to construct a detailed picture of teacher education in the arts within Ontario, with a specific focus on the Primary-Junior arts discipline. This project will survey publicly-funded educational institutions in order to create a baseline of information on arts teacher education. This foundational information will allow for differences to be identified between pre-service teacher arts programs, and will also initiate a dialogue as to whether or not arts programs are equitably administered throughout the province. Moreover, this project will examine the professional practices of teacher educators in the arts before, during, and after the …

Impact Of Covid-19 On Occupational Therapy Service Delivery In Public Schools, Amanda Ciccone
Impact Of Covid-19 On Occupational Therapy Service Delivery In Public Schools, Amanda Ciccone
Student Symposium
The COVID-19 pandemic had a major effect across the US, but the impact on the school system was a major focus within the media. Due to federal legislation, public schools are required to provide accommodations to children with disabilities in order to make them successful in schools. There is a lack of research on the effect COVID-19 had on related services which these students are provided. To bring more understanding to this aspect of the public school system, this study investigated the impact COVID-19 had on the delivery of occupational therapy services provided to children with disabilities in Ohio public …

SoTL Commons Conference
Navigating unexpected disruption caused by COVID-19 in Higher Education required immediate and flexible response by faculty and students as they pivoted to other learning modalities. In Spring Semester 2021, we administered a 40-question survey including several open-ended questions to 795 undergraduate and graduate students (master and doctoral level) in multiple disciplines across four Schools at a private university in Pennsylvania to capture student perceptions of learning experience in face-to-face, hybrid, and fully online environments. Ninety-nine students completed the survey. Lessons learned for teaching and learning include sensitivity to students’ stress and understanding learning environment design preferences and effectiveness.

Disparities In Covid-19 Rates Among Various Demographics And Lack Of Racial Representation In Medical Texts, Diangelo Gonzalez
Celebration of Learning
The 2019 novel coronavirus (COVID-19) outbreak, which originated in Wuhan, China in December of 2019, has impacted nations all over the globe. Given the health disparities which existed within the United States prior to the COVID-19 pandemic, this pandemic continued to pose a significant challenge to the health of the public. The aims of this research study were twofold: (1) to analyze the incidence rates of COVID-19 among different racial and ethnic groups within the United States and (2) to describe the occurrence of diversity within medical texts. Overall, the COVID-19 pandemic exacerbated health disparities within the United States. Understanding …

Teaching Culturally and Linguistically Diverse International Students in Open or Online Learning Environments: A Research Symposium
In the past two decades, the international-student population increased to about 600,000 (Canada Bureau for International Education, 2018). According to The Immigration, Refugees, and Citizenship Canada (IRCC, 2019I), international students contributed an estimated $21.6 billion to the Canadian gross domestic product. With the COVID-19 pandemic, recruitment of international students, and the economic contribution they bring is under threat. More so, the lockdown imposed by the government, and schools’ adoption of online learning, further poses challenges and unique experiences to children, and young persona, especially international students. We used qualitative data from a focus group of 10 male Black students, aged …

Teaching Culturally and Linguistically Diverse International Students in Open or Online Learning Environments: A Research Symposium
Building on an earlier action research project looking at international student grades at an Ontario College, the researchers explored the impact of learning in an online learning environment on international student performance. The researchers asked: 1) Is there a significant difference in the average student grades (regardless of country of residence or origin) between online delivery and in-person delivery? 2) Is there a statistically significant difference in average student grades between delivery methods, based on country of origin or residence?; and 3) Is there a statistically significant difference in average student grades between domestic and international students, based on delivery? …

Teaching Culturally and Linguistically Diverse International Students in Open or Online Learning Environments: A Research Symposium
Teaching international students can be challenging, either online or face-to-face. However, it can also be fruitful if one knows how to engage with international students in the learning and teaching environments, especially online. In Australia, traditional delivery of teaching was still going on for schools and higher educational institutions until the end of March 2020, but this changed within weeks to remote or online methods, due to the COVID-19 pandemic. At La Trobe University in Australia, teaching was paused for a week to cope with the learning and teaching ‘shock’ – that is to re-orientate teaching from face-to-face to completely …

The phenomenon of the COVID-19 pandemic has dramatically changed the format of public education, putting stress on the educational system and its teachers. This research study aims to understand the impact of COVID-19 on the role of teachers in Maine, specifically focusing on the added responsibility that parents may experience while simultaneously meeting professional obligations. Researchers posed the question: “What is the relationship between caregiving responsibilities and emotional wellbeing of teachers during the COVID-19 pandemic among public school teachers in Maine?” Participants from K-12 public schools around the state were recruited through direct contact or via building administrators who distributed …

How I Developed As A Qualitative Researcher: A Covid-19 Induced Dissertation Research Shift, Jareau Almeyda
The Qualitative Report Conference
Prior to the global COVID-19 pandemic, my dissertation study aimed to explore how exposure to information systems project management impacts perceptions of computing careers among high school female participants. However, the emergence of the COVID-19 global pandemic and the closure of schools forced the premature end of the study–resulting in the design of a new study. The new study aimed to understand the experiences of teachers and the readiness and sustainability concerns they had after being abruptly transitioned from an in-person teaching environment to a fully online teaching environment. The qualitative data, collected from a ten-item, open-ended questionnaire, underwent a …

Georgia Educational Research Association Conference
The quandary of how to deliver quality instruction in the midst of a virulent and unabated pandemic for which there are no medications or vaccination is the greatest educational dilemma of our age. Using modified interpretive policy analysis (IPA), the paper reports the results of a study that examined the challenges, responsiveness, and efficacy of policies initiated during the early outbreak of the coronavirus pandemic in three sectors of the education community: (1) Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs), (2) public schools offering services to disabled students, and (3) research universities in four geographic locations. Specific attention is given to …
