Examining Perceptions Of Service Quality Of Student Services And Satisfaction Among International Students At Universities In Indiana And Michigan, Mordekai O. Ongo May 2019

Examining Perceptions Of Service Quality Of Student Services And Satisfaction Among International Students At Universities In Indiana And Michigan, Mordekai O. Ongo

Adventist Human-Subject Researchers Association

Universities in the United States face financial constraints, intense competition for students, declining student enrollment, and constant student attrition. However, an increasing number of international students seek higher education abroad, especially in the U.S. Providing quality services to these international students might help institutions attract and retain more of them. Unfortunately, little empirical research has been done on international students’ perceptions of service quality, especially of non-academic services. The purpose of the study was to examine perceptions of service quality of nonacademic services and satisfaction among international students at universities in Indiana and Michigan. The study also investigated the relationship …

A Critical Conceptual Dialogue On E. G. White's Admonition: "Not Mere Reflectors", Jay Brand, Randy J. Siebold Mar 2019

A Critical Conceptual Dialogue On E. G. White's Admonition: "Not Mere Reflectors", Jay Brand, Randy J. Siebold

Andrews University Teaching and Learning Conference

White's challenge, that 'Youth should be … thinkers, and not mere reflectors of other men's thoughts' can be misinterpreted. Often, individuals criticize education’s focus on scholarly sources instead of personal creativity. However, to avoid reflecting other men’s thoughts, students must be aware of what those men – and women – have said. In fact, in my understanding, it is impossible to contribute original, fresh ideas and insights WITHOUT awareness of what others have already said. To think originally, one must be familiar with previous ideas; otherwise, s/he will be in danger of merely reflecting the ideas of others - even …

Of Maps And Courtrooms: Evaluating Information Sources, Terry Robertson

Seminary Scholarship Symposium

How are novice researchers to evaluate library resources in a topic for which they have limited prior knowledge? Kuhlthau has described two phases in a typical student research process: exploring and documenting. This poster suggests two familiar metaphors that provide clues to evaluating library-mediated sources. During the exploration phase, the metaphor of the map is discussed. What makes for a good map? Many of these same characteristics should be present in the sources that are accessed. Typical characteristics of maps demonstrating the values of soundness and reliability that can be applied to library-mediated resources include: (a) currency, (b) credentialed authors …

Integrating The Scholarship Of Teaching, Learning And Assessment Into One Institution’S Homegrown Professional Learning Resources, Maria Northcote, Anthony Williams, Kevin Petrie, John Seddon, Sherene Hattingh

Adventist Online Learning Conference / Conferencia de Aprendizaje en Línea

Many professional learning (PL) programs in universities aspire to support tertiary educators to perform duties associated with teaching, student learning and assessment. Additionally, because much of a university academic’s work is associated with conducting scholarly research and supervising students’ research, PL programs also need to provide support associated with supervision and research activities. Faced with these multiple PL demands, one small Australian higher education institution developed a suite of resources to support faculty teaching staff and researchers in their professional capacities using a heuristic (self-determined) approach to resource development. The content of the resources drew on the principles of the …

How Are They Going?: A Project To Monitor Student Engagement, Anthony Williams, Maria T. Northcote, John Reddin

Adventist Online Learning Conference / Conferencia de Aprendizaje en Línea

The transition from school or work to university studies is not always a smooth change for many students. The university context may appear threatening, strange and isolating for some students, whether the courses be offered in on-campus or online contexts. While most modern day universities offer a raft of support services for students, including both academic and non-academic services, problems of low retention and high attrition rates still plague some institutions and some sections of particular institutions in the higher education sector. This paper presents an innovative program that uses technology-supported strategies within a regular learning management system (LMS) to …

Getting On The Online Education Train: The Journey Of A Small Higher Education Institution, Anthony Williams, Maria T. Northcote

Adventist Online Learning Conference / Conferencia de Aprendizaje en Línea

Many universities have instituted professional learning centres that support academic teaching staff in their capacity to facilitate student-centred learning. Some of these centres also extend their reach to incorporate scholarship and research. This paper reports on one such case, in which a small higher education institution in Australia established what has become known as the Centre for Advancement of the Scholarship of Teaching and Learning (CASTL). From its inception, the CASTL’s intentions have been multi-dimensional, in that its programs, activities and resource development span the following areas of scholarship: 1) learning and teaching; 2) researcher education and support of postgraduate …

Advising Strategies That Increase Online And Post-Traditional Student Persistence, Glynis M. Bradfield

Adventist Online Learning Conference / Conferencia de Aprendizaje en Línea

Research indicates that a crucial factor to student persistence is the quality of student relationship with at least one person in the university community, often the academic advisor. Even though retention and persistence rates are consistently lower for online and non-traditional (or adult) students than traditional (young, on-campus) students, distance education continues to grow. This paper reviews research and one university’s journey to build capacity and quality of distance student services. Considering academic advisor evaluation survey results, online learning management and student information system quantitative data, along with distance degree student qualitative data, this paper shares mix methods action research …

Managing For Quality In Higher Education: A Biblical Perspective, Ben A. Maguad Mar 2017

Managing For Quality In Higher Education: A Biblical Perspective, Ben A. Maguad

Andrews University Teaching and Learning Conference

Although higher education has long been committed to excellence, its pace of change and improvement has been slow and episodic at best due to external pressures. To overcome the many obstacles confronting it, strong leadership is needed in all areas: academic, administrative, student life, and service. The challenge is to clarify the principles, knowledge, and skill bases necessary for effective higher education leadership. The spiritual dimension is perhaps the missing piece that today’s institutions need to effect lasting and meaningful change in the behaviors or attitudes of their people from the top administrator to the entry-level employee.
