Roundtable – Teaching Human Rights: Challenges And Best Practices, Shayna Plaut, Kristi Kenyon, Joel Pruce, William Simmons
Biennial Conference: The Social Practice of Human Rights
Over the past 20 years, courses addressing human rights have grown dramatically at both the undergraduate and graduate levels worldwide. Many of these courses are housed in specific disciplines, focus on specific issues, and require practical experience in the form of internships/practicums. Amid this growth there is a need to reflect on teaching human rights including the challenges, fears, and best practices.
Recognizing that education takes place inside and outside a classroom, this roundtable brings together scholars teaching human rights in a variety of settings to examine the current state of university human rights education. This includes a discussion of …

Social Scholarship? Academic Communications In The Digital Age, Steven Weiland
Social Scholarship? Academic Communications In The Digital Age, Steven Weiland
Charleston Library Conference
A recent sign of the technological transformation of scholarship is the consolidation of views about the emergence of the “digital scholar,” a variation on the influential reform minded account of faculty work associated with Ernest Boyer’s Scholarship Reconsidered (1990). An essential feature of this new form of academic practice and identity is named “social scholarship,” or participation in scholarly communications via the growing variety of digital networks for professional interaction. Scholars and librarians can recognize the change while acknowledging the durability of academic workflow conventions. Libraries can guide the faculty in social scholarship and be gadflies in matters of the …

Many professional learning (PL) programs in universities aspire to support tertiary educators to perform duties associated with teaching, student learning and assessment. Additionally, because much of a university academic’s work is associated with conducting scholarly research and supervising students’ research, PL programs also need to provide support associated with supervision and research activities. Faced with these multiple PL demands, one small Australian higher education institution developed a suite of resources to support faculty teaching staff and researchers in their professional capacities using a heuristic (self-determined) approach to resource development. The content of the resources drew on the principles of the …

How Are They Going?: A Project To Monitor Student Engagement, Anthony Williams, Maria T. Northcote, John Reddin
Adventist Online Learning Conference / Conferencia de Aprendizaje en Línea
The transition from school or work to university studies is not always a smooth change for many students. The university context may appear threatening, strange and isolating for some students, whether the courses be offered in on-campus or online contexts. While most modern day universities offer a raft of support services for students, including both academic and non-academic services, problems of low retention and high attrition rates still plague some institutions and some sections of particular institutions in the higher education sector. This paper presents an innovative program that uses technology-supported strategies within a regular learning management system (LMS) to …

Many universities have instituted professional learning centres that support academic teaching staff in their capacity to facilitate student-centred learning. Some of these centres also extend their reach to incorporate scholarship and research. This paper reports on one such case, in which a small higher education institution in Australia established what has become known as the Centre for Advancement of the Scholarship of Teaching and Learning (CASTL). From its inception, the CASTL’s intentions have been multi-dimensional, in that its programs, activities and resource development span the following areas of scholarship: 1) learning and teaching; 2) researcher education and support of postgraduate …

Advising Strategies That Increase Online And Post-Traditional Student Persistence, Glynis M. Bradfield
Adventist Online Learning Conference / Conferencia de Aprendizaje en Línea
Research indicates that a crucial factor to student persistence is the quality of student relationship with at least one person in the university community, often the academic advisor. Even though retention and persistence rates are consistently lower for online and non-traditional (or adult) students than traditional (young, on-campus) students, distance education continues to grow. This paper reviews research and one university’s journey to build capacity and quality of distance student services. Considering academic advisor evaluation survey results, online learning management and student information system quantitative data, along with distance degree student qualitative data, this paper shares mix methods action research …

Culturally-competent communication is necessary to engage all community stakeholders. Tara Thomas and Stephanie Mohorne will explain in a one-hour, interactive session how Waterloo Schools applies this strategy to effectively reach its audience—students, staff, families and the community in the 7th largest, and one of the most diverse, school districts in Iowa. Thomas, a former television news anchor and reporter, will give specific examples of how sharing messages with the media and, in turn, the public needs to be a carefully-guided process based on factors like race and socio-economic status. Mohorne, a longtime educational leader and bi-racial daughter of a single …

Addressing Wicked Problems In Practical Ways: Empowering Ethical Action In Higher Ed And Beyond, Cara B. Stone, Anne Marie Gruber
Ethics Conference
This discussion-based workshop will engage faculty and students alike in identifying problem areas related to social responsibility and action. Using a “Wicked Problems” framework, the presenters will provide examples of and opportunities for participants to reflect on challenges they observe in their disciplines/professional lives and on their campuses. Wicked Problems are complex and multifaceted, do not have a simple description or solution, and “are different because traditional processes can’t resolve them” (Camillus, 2008). In a higher education context, faculty and students can address these problems but this will require “new ways of learning, new ways of working together, and new …

Generational Shift: Why We Should Modify Our Instructional Strategies For The Next Generations Of Aviators, Mary Niemczyk
National Training Aircraft Symposium (NTAS)
Air transportation has proven to be an extremely safe, efficient and reliable means for travel – a testament to highly effective instruction and training. Airlines are forecasted to continue their rapid expansion over the next 20 years needing to hire more than 2 million aviation personnel (Boeing, 2015). As Baby Boomers retire, at the rate of 10,000 per day/4 million per year, a ‘generational replacement’ or shift will occur with Gen Y and Z members taking their places in the workforce.
Each generation is impacted by significant events during their developmental adolescent years. For Gen Y members, technological and K-12 …

It’S Almost Magic. Embedding Libguides In Canvas Courses Using Springshare’S Automagic Lti Tool, Alice Anderson
SIDLIT Conference
An academic library may have hundreds of database subscriptions. Librarians create dozens of research guides to point the way to the best resources for subjects and classes. But manually creating links between appropriate library resources and the hundreds of college courses offered every semester is prohibitively labor intensive. The answer is to automate that linking process. Learning Tools Interoperability (LTI) allows applications to interact with learning management systems (LMS) in defined ways. Springshare's LibApps Automagic LTI Tool makes getting the right library resources for each course into the hands of students easier. Discussion will center on how Kansas State University …

The Craft Of Story-Telling In Engineering Education, Ethan Brue
Christian Engineering Conference
For all the efforts over the last decade or more to attract, retain, and engage more students in STEM education, the challenge remains. Most programs have focused on creating gateway programs that attempt to sell the content of engineering as fun and entertaining. While there is little doubt that the task of engineering will be existentially pleasing, it is not a re-casting of the content alone that will attract and keep students in STEM disciplines. In both industry and education, the challenge of engineering is rarely one of content, but rather one of underlying motivation and purpose. History demonstrates that …

The College of the Ozarks began a four-year general engineering program in the fall of 2016. This is the first four-year engineering program at a federally-recognized work college. At the College of the Ozarks, all full-time students work in exchange for tuition. The campus is built with student labor, and college functions are largely conducted by students. The College work component provides challenges in areas such as student schedules and workload. However, the graded work experiences also provide opportunities to increase work maturity and ties between the program and the campus community. The regional and economic improvement focus of the …
Integrally Christian Engineering Scholarship: A Case Study, Justin R. Vander Werff
Integrally Christian Engineering Scholarship: A Case Study, Justin R. Vander Werff
Christian Engineering Conference
Engineering programs at Christian colleges typically focus primarily on undergraduate education. Likewise, faculty members drawn to Christian engineering education tend to have a strong desire to disciple young men and women in what it means to be faithful Christ followers in engineering. Consequently, engineering faculty tend to work long and hard to provide a solid education experience, leaving little time for anything else. However, institutional demands on faculty typically extend far past teaching, and one area that inevitably pops up in growing Christian engineering programs is research and scholarship. What is the place of research in a Christian engineering program? …

This study explored the extent to which faculty report teaching engineering and computing students about ethics and societal impacts (ESI) in courses and via co-curricular activities. The research questions were to determine if there were differences in the topics, teaching methods, assessment methods, and satisfaction with ESI instruction between faculty from religiously-affiliated (RA) and non-religiously affiliated (NRA) institutions. A national survey was conducted, with about 1400 responses. This included 122 faculty from 60 RA institutions (across 17 denominations/faiths). Chi-square tests evaluated statistically significant differences (p
