Mobile-Based Assessment And Iranian College Students' Motivation, Self-Efficacy, And Academic Performance, Abrisham Mokhtari
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
Mobile learning can increase students' access to more affordable and quality college education for those living in remote areas. Even though the instructional aspect of mobile learning has received much attention, there has been limited consideration of the assessment aspect. The purpose of this qualitative study was to explore the perceptions of Iranian college students on the utilization of mobile devices as assessment tools and the influence it has on motivation, self-efficacy, and academic performance in their learning process. The conceptual framework of this study included the unified theory of acceptance and use of technology and Bandura's self-efficacy theory. Data …

Academically-Redshirted Males' Behavior And Academic Performance At The Middle School Level, Cassandra Ricciardi Capadona
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
Male students appear not ready for middle school by exhibiting lower grades, learner disengagement, and/or behavior problems. The age in which male students initially enter school has not been fully investigated as a possible systemic issue of a lack of male student longitudinal success and learner engagement. The purpose of this quantitative study was to examine the differences between how academically redshirted male students performed academically and behaviorally compared to their non-academically redshirted grade mates at Grades 6-8. This study drew from the theories of early childhood constructivists: Piaget, Vygotsky, and Montessori. The research questions addressed the academic and behavioral …

Relationship Between Teacher Instructional Preparedness And English Learner Language Arts Performance, Dorothy Diane Steele
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
English language learners (ELLs) are the fastest-growing population in California schools, with a high percentage of students not meeting the standard of the English language arts performance on the California Standardized Test (CST). This project study investigated the problem in a California school district where it was unknown whether the intervention strategies provided to teachers gave them the curricular skills needed to address the instructional needs of ELLs. The purpose of this quantitative study was to determine whether teachers' self-reported instructional preparedness to teach ELLs was related to ELLs language arts performance. The study was grounded in Marzano's model of …

The Predictive Relationship Between Naturopathic Basic Science Curriculum And Nplex I Performance, Tammy Marie Aragon
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
Naturopathic medical schools are concerned with low first-time pass rates on the Naturopathic Physicians Licensing Exam Part I (NPLEX I) that may impact schools' accreditation with the Council on Naturopathic Medical Education (CNME). At a North American school of naturopathic medicine first-time pass rates have been a concern for 3 of the last 5 years. The purpose of this quantitative study was to determine whether students' naturopathic basic science content area scores predict NPLEX I scores at this this school. Grounded in general systems theory, a predictive correlational research design utilizing multiple logistic regression analyses was used. Archival data were …

Hospitality Students' Perceptions Regarding The Role Of Paid Employment In Academic Performance, Ruth Annette Smith
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
Between January and December 2014, 68% of full-time hospitality management students at a southeastern university in the United States worked for pay more than 15 hours each week. Fifty percent of these students had a GPA of 2.5 or below, reflecting poor academic performance as benchmarked by the institution. The purpose of this study was to achieve an understanding of how full-time undergraduate hospitality students perceived the role of paid employment in their academic performance. The study was grounded by Astin's student involvement theory that requires an investment of psychosocial and physical energy by students for a successful college experience. …

Examination Of Adhd Symptoms In Children Of Traveling Armed Services Members, Giovanda Dewette Norman
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
Research has captured a notable increase in the diagnosis of attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) in the United States. This increase in ADHD diagnosis is also seen in children in military communities. A gap in the literature exists regarding how military deployment affects the presentation of ADHD symptoms of children aged 3 to 15 in military families. The study examined the effect of military deployment status on children aged 3 to 15 with symptoms of ADHD. Participants were 164 military families, representative of the diversity of the military, from military bases around Southern California. Each participant responded to 2 questionnaires: …
