A Controlled Composition-Based Exercise Program To Teach Error Remediation In Writing In The High School Regular Freshman English Classroom, Sarah E. Mitchell

Theses and Dissertations

For this project, a controlled composition-based exercise program was developed for use in the high school freshman English writing classroom. This non-error-based method utilized a four-stage design -- attention grabber exercises, rewriting exercises, proofreading practice and test exercises, and writing assignments -- to teach error remediation through writing. After the students were exposed to correctness in stage one, they were asked to make transformations, to practice proofreading, and finally to demonstrate knowledge of correct usage in both testing and writing modes.

Included in the program are two diagnostic tools, a student checklist, an introductory sentence section, and sections to address …

The study implemented a correlational research design, and the Pearson product moment correlation coefficient was used to determine the relationship between the locus of control scores and the GPA scores. Results indicated a significant relationship between the internal dimension …

The Development Of Secondary Education For Black Students In Columbus, Georgia 1920-1930, Becky Matthews Jan 1990

The Development Of Secondary Education For Black Students In Columbus, Georgia 1920-1930, Becky Matthews

Theses and Dissertations

Prior to the opening of William H. Spencer High School in 1930, the highest level of public education that Columbus, Georgia, provided for its black students was nine years of industrial schooling that was designed to prepare them for jobs as manual laborers or domestic workers. The process which led to the development of Spencer High School was complex and protracted and involved a variety of organizations and individuals, but the major impetus for the building of the school came from three sources. These include consistent pressure from black community leaders, the growth of the city's black population, and the …

The Pine Mountain Valley Rural Community Project 1934-1946, Nick Marino Jan 1990

The Pine Mountain Valley Rural Community Project 1934-1946, Nick Marino

Theses and Dissertations

During the Great Depression New Deal planners attributed much of the nation's unemployment problem to automation in the workplace. It was believed that structural economic changes had dislocated millions of city workers permanently. To get these people off relief, the Federal Emergency Relief Administration established about 100 rural industrial communities across America. By providing the opportunity to develop rural communities based upon modern farming and agriculturally-related industries, dislocated workers would be brought back to the land as productive citizens. One of the most unique of these rural industrial communities was established in Pine Mountain Valley, Georgia. Being near President Roosevelt's …

Theses and Dissertations

The study was undertaken to investigate the role of competitive behavior in the distribution of the crayfish Procambarus spicullfer and Procambarus versutus. Forty pairs of animals, one of each species per pair, were matched by size and gender. For each pair, four fifteen minute agonistic encounters were observed under controlled laboratory conditions, and winners were determined using a scoring system developed by the author. P. versutus won 26 of 40 contests. Chi Square analysis revealed that this outcome deviated from an expected 50/50 ratio at the .942 significance level, suggesting support for the hypothesis that no difference exists in competitive …

An Original Formula That Produces Polynomial Functions With Integral Critical Points And Zeros. Will The Classroom Teacher Use It?, Roy C. Gregory

Theses and Dissertations

The author of this paper presents an original formula for creating polynomial functions with integral critical points and Integral zeros. This formula provides quickly constructed polynomial functions needed for teaching graphing techniques at the high school level. These functions have the characteristic that both coordinates of each critical point and each zero are integers, which simplifies graphing. A group of one hundred twenty high school mathematics teachers were sent questionnaires to determine if high school teachers would use the formula. Of the fifty-two respondents; twenty-six responded that they would use the formula; twenty-six responded that they may use the formula …

Encouraging A Positive Self-Image, Lois W. Atkins

Theses and Dissertations

This project was designed as a workshop to teach a method of encouraging better self-images in students. A series of self-improvement imagery exercises are outlined. Steps include choosing goals; writing them in behavioral terms and specific measurable outcomes; and using self-recording, self-reward and self-punishment. By aiding students early in their school career to develop positive self-concepts, good work habits, and high motivation, ultimately a lower dropout rate and higher percentages of self-actualized persons is visualized.

Differences In The. Reading And Mathematics Achievement Between Asian American And Non Asian American Children, Linda B. Price Jan 1989

Differences In The. Reading And Mathematics Achievement Between Asian American And Non Asian American Children, Linda B. Price

Theses and Dissertations

Explanations for the achievement or overachievement of Asian Americans are often conflicting and subject to debate among researchers. Four major theories for this achievement are explored in the review of literature. One of these theories concerns the idea that Asian American's beliefs are the result of Confucianism and its influence on the lives of Asian Americans. Another theory examines the parent's positive attitude toward education and its influence on achievement. A third theory suggests that Asian American babies are more alert and sensitive at birth. The final theory examined proposes that the Asian American immigration to the United States is …
