Refugio I. Rochin
A majority of rural Latinos are immigrants or the first sons and daughters of immigrants from Mexico. They arrive to survive, earn income, raise and support family and work hard without burdening public services. I offer a personal account of rural Latinos, partly through the lives of my parents, to explain Latino adaptations and contributions in America. Abstract for Rochin & Mello (2007)
Latinas/os in Science & Engineering is a study of the patterns and trends of Latina/o doctorates in U.S. fields of STEM – Science Technology Engineering and Mathematics. The study uses data from NSF and the US Department of Education to address these questions: What is the trend in doctoral degree completion in fields of STEM? What fields are pursued? What is the citizenship status of Latina/o doctorates? What are the baccalaureate origins of Latina/o doctorates? What roles do community colleges and Hispanic Serving Institutions play in serving Latinas/os?

Using multiple regression analysis, we compare non-Latino vs Latino test scores in rural school districts (grades 3,6,12) to determine the "effects" of Latino concentration, English proficiency, socio-economic status and school funding. We find relatively better test results for Latinos as Latino concentration increases. We provide theoretical hypothesis for more study.
