Reading And Extraneous-Free Tests, Jerome Axelrod Apr 1974

Reading And Extraneous-Free Tests, Jerome Axelrod

Reading Horizons: A Journal of Literacy and Language Arts

An extraneous-loaded test is one which tests something other than or more than what the exam purports to test. A pupil's score on an extraneous-loaded test is unduly inflated or deflated because it allows him to bring to the testing situation data (i.e., experiences and previous learnings) which are unrelated to the test but which "help him out" (so the pupil thinks) with the answers. For example, if a student figures out the correct answer to a question in an objective reading comprehension test by using the process of elimination, then that question does not test reading comprehension. Instead, it …

Reading In The Secondary School, Kenneth Vandermeulen

Reading Horizons: A Journal of Literacy and Language Arts

Secondary teachers of vocational subjects frequently have to face the burdensome task of choosing the right text for their courses, but they would not and should not delegate the responsibility to other offices or agencies. In having to deal with choice of texts, teachers feel several factors are operating against the chances of finding the right textbook. Sometimes they express a certain frustration, saying, "As if it is not enough responsibility to try to prepare young people for a role in a technical area, we even have some evidence that students whose verbal backgrounds are poor are advised to take …

An Experiment In Cross-Age Tutoring, Connie Strong Morrison

Reading Horizons: A Journal of Literacy and Language Arts

Participating elementary students were chosen by their classroom teachers. Seventh and eighth graders were selected by the junior high reading teacher. All of the students involved participated by choice, and none were required to be a part of the program. It was interesting to observe that in a very short period of time tutoring became a status symbol in the junior high, and several students went so far as to feign reading problems in order to be eligible for the tutoring project.

Did You See "Reading Failures, Dropouts, Delinquency and Crime" by Newell W. Tune? It appears in the Fall, 1973, issue of the Spelling Progress Bulletin. Tune points out that even though education in America's schools has improved, it is still inadequate. The nonreader has been with us since the dawn of literacy, and there are still 18 million American adults who cannot read a newspaper. This stimulating article states that a reading disability, more than any other single factor, accounts for behavior problems, truancy, and general school failure. Well-known authors are quoted throughout this article.

P-V-S: A New Approach To Teaching Communication Skills, Bruce A. Lloyd

Reading Horizons: A Journal of Literacy and Language Arts

Conscientious teachers are constantly searching for viable procedures which will enhance pupil creativity in oral and written expression. Typically such teachers attempt to avoid the sterile, stereotyped, workbook-oriented language "lessons" and endeavor to bring into their classrooms valuable activities which provide some direction but do not stifle pupil interest or creativity. Furthermore, because the acquisition of speaking and writing skills is being encouraged in modern classroom instructional programs, those media which assist the teacher are in ever-increasing demand.

Did You See "IRA Reports on The Right To Read Effort"? This special report on the National Right to Read effort was published in May, 1973, for IRA members and others interested in this important program. The Right To Read effort was established in 1970 by the late Dr. James E. Allen, Jr., who was then U.S. Com missioner of Education. The program was designed as a coordinated endeavor to work toward one common goal—to ensure that by 1980 ninety-nine percent of all people under 16 years of age in the U.S. and ninety percent of all those over 16 …

Reading In The Secondary School: 'Carbon Dating' Figures Of Speech, Kenneth Vandermeulen

Reading Horizons: A Journal of Literacy and Language Arts

Teachers usually find that students become enthusiastic and energetic when they are discovering new things for themselves. This article points up some possibilities in teaching students to become "detectives," investigating the age and origin of words and phrases used in American simile and metaphor. An end result is sure to be a heightened feeling for literary style, with an increased appreciation for creative writing a possible "spinoff." Students may also gain a clearer picture of the cultural settings from which these figures of speech are derived.

The Play's The Thing: A Dramatic Approach To Reading, Harvey Frommer

Reading Horizons: A Journal of Literacy and Language Arts

Too often educators and students alike content themselves with the more convenient aspects of reading drama: analysis of thought, dissection of structure and plot, information about a playwright's life and times, discussion of characterization, performance of segments of a play. Language—sometimes soaring, sometimes vulgar, poignant, distressing, philosophical, or witty—gets short shrift in this type of drama study.
