Distal Urogenital Anatomy Of Male Southern Coal Skinks, Plestiodon Anthracinus Pluvialis (Reptilia: Scincidae), Stanley E. Trauth
Journal of the Arkansas Academy of Science
I investigated the morphology and histology of the distal urogenital anatomy of male southern coal skinks (Plestiodon anthracinus pluvialis) from reproductively active individuals collected in Arkansas in order to provide comparative information with recent studies on squamate urogenital anatomy. Specifically, I focused on the basic anatomy and positioning of posterior ducts in this skink, which included portions of the ductus deferens, the ampulla ductus deferentis, the sexual segment of the kidney, the ureter and collecting ducts, as well as aspects of the urodaeal chamber and urogenital papillae. I found a much reduced ampulla ductus deferentis comprising only 0.7 …

Germinal Epithelium Cytology During Spermatogenesis In The Alligator Snapping Turtle, Macrochelys Temminckii (Reptilia: Chelydridae), Stanley E. Trauth, Kevin M. Gribbins
Journal of the Arkansas Academy of Science
We investigated the cytology of the seminiferous epithelia of the Alligator Snapping Turtle (Macrochelys temminckii). Spermatogenic and regressed testes were assessed from 2 adult individuals collected in Arkansas in May and September of 1993. Specifically, we focused on the cellular phases of germ cell development and maturation. The germ cell morphology and developmental strategy within the germinal epithelium of M. temminckii appear similar to that of other genera of turtles previously studied. Interestingly, mitotic, meiotic, and spermiogeneic cells are nearly identical to that of other turtles studied based on light microscopy. There are also 6 recognizable steps to …

Succeeding In Introduction To Physical Science: Is Mathematics Background Important?, Wilson J. Gonzalez-Espada
Journal of the Arkansas Academy of Science
Most college students complete courses in physical and life science as general education requirements. Although the level of difficulty of these survey courses is relatively low compared to upper-level science courses, a number of students still struggle to pass them. The purpose of this research was to investigate (a) the nature of mathematics background of students enrolling in physical science courses; (b) the change in mathematics ability of students at the end of the semester; and (c) what is the relationship between mathematics background and course completion and success. A 15-item test of basic mathematics skills was administered as a …

Effects Of Science Crusade In Arkansas, Mostafa Hemmati, Heath Spillers
Journal of the Arkansas Academy of Science
The NSF funded Arkansas Statewide Systemic Initiative (1992), developed with the intent to restructure mathematics and science education in Arkansas, is a recent reform in the Arkansas educational system. The project aimed at changing Arkansas students' attitudes toward science and mathematics, improving student learning and performance, introducing appropriate technology into the classrooms, and allowing for a lasting community involvement in the Arkansas educational system. To implement change through Arkansas Science and Math Crusades, the project has provided large scale teacher training and professional development opportunities to Arkansas school teachers. This reform effort in education started in 1992. A search of …
Coplanarity Test For Selecting A Pair Of Charged-Particle Tracks Resulting From A Single Neutral-Particle Decay, Edwin S. Braithwaite, Wilfred J. Braithwaite
Coplanarity Test For Selecting A Pair Of Charged-Particle Tracks Resulting From A Single Neutral-Particle Decay, Edwin S. Braithwaite, Wilfred J. Braithwaite
Journal of the Arkansas Academy of Science
It is hard to determine directly the position of a neutral subatomic particle, but when such a particle decays into a pair of charged particles, it is easy to determine the positions of the charged decay particles and thereby infer the position of the parent particle at the time of its decay. A minimum of two coordinate points for each of the two decay particles is needed to reconstruct the position of the parent vertex. The mathematics of the reconstruction process is inherently interesting, and it can be used to demonstrate to students the utility of some of the most …

Ann: A Set Of Educational Neural Net Simulators, Siripong Malasri, Stanley P. Franklin
Journal of the Arkansas Academy of Science
ANN has been developed on MS-DOS computers primarily for educational uses. Currently, it consists of six simulation programs. ANN1 is a very simple neural net which shows how a network learns by adjusting its connection weights. ANN2 is a single processing element neural net, in which the user trains the network manually by adjusting the connection weights and the threshold value. ANN3 is a manually trained simple two layered network. It demonstrates the power of hidden neurons. ANN4is a Bidirectional Associative Memory network. ANN5 is a Perceptron that learns from examples. ANN6 is a network based on the backpropagation of …

Educational Software Development Using Hypertext And Expert System Software Concepts, Siripong Malasri, Roger R. Easson
Journal of the Arkansas Academy of Science
This paper presents two computer software concepts: hypertext and expert systems; which are useful for educational software development. Good educational software enhances the learning process and offers opportunities for faculty to provide additional materials for independent studies, which would otherwise be impossible, due to the limited time and incredible growing rate of technological progress. The hypertext concept offers the students a non-linear learning style, while the expert system concept provides explanation facilities for students to probe the logic of the systems. Both approaches are extremely useful for educational software. With the proper tools, the courseware can be implemented easily and …

Journal of the Arkansas Academy of Science
Several definitions of the term "engineer" are presented, discussed, and contrasted with the term "scientist". These definitions demonstrate the fundamental differences between engineers and scientists and their professions The engineering method is compared with the scientific method and the value of each is discussed. Several aspects of engineering education are covered. The need for more liberally educated engineers is emphasized and the impact of computers on engineering education and the engineering profession is discussed. The value of a good science foundation in an undergraduate engineering program is also stressed. An engineering education is only as good as the engineering educators …

University Of Arkansas At Monticello's 1985 Summer Science Institute: A Report And An Opinion, Eric Sundell
Journal of the Arkansas Academy of Science
The University of Arkansas at Monticello's 1985 Summer Science Institute was created to improve competence in science among on-the-job upper elementary school teachers (grades 4-6) in southeast Arkansas. Students received three weeks of solid introductory coursework in botany, chemistry, and geology. However, deficiencies in public school science education are extensive and deeply rooted and will not be seriously addressed by anything less than radical changes in teacher training and certification policies.

Toward A Concise Definition And Perspective For Biology, Arthur V. Brown, Kristine Basinger Brown
Journal of the Arkansas Academy of Science
The content of introductory biology courses at the high school and college levels are currently being re-examined. Many biological educators favor revision of the high school biology courses to a format that directly addresses current social issues to "promote good citizenship". We believe it would be more meaningful to teach the fundamental principles of biology, the study of living systems. Properly defining biology, by defining a living system, should help identify important topics to include in a basic biology course. Emphasis should be placed on subjects which would contribute most to the development of a basic understanding of how all …

Experimental Testing Program In Elementary Chemistry: A Preliminary Report, Billie G. Broach, Howard L. Hodges
Journal of the Arkansas Academy of Science
An experimental testing program is described which utilizes questions that are partly computer composed, in addition to a section composed by the instructor, and a retesting option to the student. Results from a trial of the program for one term indicate that (1) course grades were improved, (2) the student withdrawal failure rate was unaffected, and (3) the employed students took greater advantage of the retest than did the unemployed students.

Multi-Use Of The Campus Environment In The Teaching Of Botany, Jewel E. Moore
Journal of the Arkansas Academy of Science
Use of the campus environment in the teaching program is described with special reference to the campus of University of Central Arkansas. Permanent labels identify the campus trees, many of which are representative of native Arkansas trees. A Daylily Display Bed and an Iris Display Bed, both composed of hybrid varieties, are included in the campus design. This organization of the flora of the campus provides a community service as well as an outdoor supplement to the classroom studies in plant science.

Chemistry Departments In Predominantly Black Institutions, James O. Wear, Nirmal K. Shastri
Journal of the Arkansas Academy of Science
Chemistry programs in 87 predominantly Black institutions were compared by questionnaire survey. Advanced undergraduate courses were offered for chemistry majors by 86% of these schools, but only 28% offered research and independent study for undergraduates. Although there were extremes, most of the faculty taught 15 to 18 contact hours and their median salaries were below the national median. Library support seemed adequate with 1 to 1.5% of the total library materials being chemistry books, texts and reference, and the libraries of most schools had holdings of 15 principal chemistry-related journals. More than 90% of the schools were well-equipped with laboratory …
