In his paper, Slock (1977) commented upon a different view of what science is and how it operates. It has been my experience that prospective secondary science teachers are extremely deficient in this area. Perhaps, it is not a different view that is needed as much as a definite viewpoint that is needed.

When looking upon an aroused sea, many wonder how this seemingly large energy resource could be used. Inventive minds have gone to work on devices of all kinds - pumps and bellows, buoys, barges, and ramps, surface and subsurface siting, using alloys and plastics, etc. -generally based on mechanical or hydraulic principles. They would probably all work (if somebody would build them), but none thus far have been shown to do so profitably.

Six years ago, Wahlert High School became a pilot school for the use of SPBE (Self-Paced Biology Experiences), an individualized biology course written by James Kelly of the Malcolm Price Laboratory School at the University of Northern Iowa. Through its implementation, the value of individualized instruction was recognized.

Purchase a head of red-purple cabbage. Cut up small pieces so that approximately a cupful of chopped leaves is obtained. Pour in enough water to cover the leaves and boil until the leaves turn colorless. Decant the purple liquid and store the liquid in a refrigerator for use.

Iowa's rock record is noted for its abundance of carbonate rocks. These carbonate rocks, limestones and dolomites, contain interesting textural features and an abundance of fossils. The fossils can often be removed from the rock matrix and studied. The fossils can also be studied in cut and polished slabs of rock or by making thin sections of the rock. Thin sections are prepared by cutting a thin slice from the rock and gluing the slice on a glass slide. The rock slice is then ground-down with abrasives to a thickness of .030 mm., covered with a coverslip, and studied with …
