On that date President Lloyd H. Elliott was directed by the Trustees "to appoint a faculty committee to make a thorough study of fraternities and sororities at the University of Maine, particularly their relationship to the purposes and values of the institution." The chair of the committee was Professor John J. Nolde, and this report was sometimes referred to as the "Nolde Report."
