Manifestation Determination Reviews: What Is The Role Of The Speech Language Pathologist And Are The Language Abilities Of The Student Considered?, Joan Turner

All Theses, Dissertations, and Capstone Projects

The purpose of this study is to seek best practices for Manifestation Determination Review (MDR) meetings with regards to Speech Language Pathologist (SLP) participation, how frequently expressive and receptive language of the student are considered throughout the process, and the degree to which MDR teams follow best practice recommendations. Given the vague federal guidelines regarding the MDR process, SLPs are not consistently invited to MDR meetings and expressive and receptive language of the student being disciplined are not consistently considered in the manifestation determination meetings and process (Fisher et al., 2021; Knudsen & Bethune, 2018). The researcher used a mixed …

An Exploration Of Dress Codes In Speech-Language Pathology Graduate Programs, Brumbaugh Klaire Jan 2024

An Exploration Of Dress Codes In Speech-Language Pathology Graduate Programs, Brumbaugh Klaire

All Theses, Dissertations, and Capstone Projects

This investigation utilized a qualitative approach to explore dress code policy in twelve Midwestern master’s in speech-language pathology programs. After a written policy review, the clinic directors associated with each program were interviewed. Following the interview, the clinic directors sent a survey to the graduate students to complete (n = 74). Findings suggest that the dress codes in speech pathology should consider concepts related to client perception, discipline, financial responsibility, and safety when considering their dress codes. Information related to how to use the findings to support all students is discussed.

Exploring Cultural Competence As A Best Practice In K-12 Public Schools, Twyla J. Baylor

All Theses, Dissertations, and Capstone Projects

Teachers should embrace cultural competence as classrooms become culturally diverse to ensure that the learning environment promotes inclusion. Teachers must explore instructional practices that connect to a student’s background knowledge to engage and motivate learning. By building on the knowledge that a student has, teachers create an environment where students can experience academic achievement. “Teachers who create caring classroom cultures improve the overall learning experience (Tarbutton, 2018, p.5). The student’s learning experience can also be the teacher’s lived experience to determine the effectiveness of instructional practices utilized in the classroom. This study's findings revealed that K-12 public school teachers’ ethnic …

How Backstories Influence The Way Teachers Speak To And About Traumatized Students: A Case Study, Keona Nicole Griffin-King

All Theses, Dissertations, and Capstone Projects

Many students experience or have experienced both Adverse Community Environments and Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACEs) (Alive and Well STL, 2021). When students come to school having experienced these ACEs they may be operating from the survival region of the brain. The four conditions of the survival brain are fight, flight, fright, or fawn. (Alive & Well STL, 2021). These conditions cause behaviors that may appear to teachers as misbehavior, classroom disruption, and rule breaking. These misunderstandings and misinterpretations may be due to teachers’ lack of knowledge about their students and specifically about their traumas, current and past (Griffin-King, 2022). Additional …

The Craft Of Constructing A Classroom Library: Student Collaboration In Book Selection For The Classroom Library, Meredith Murray

All Theses, Dissertations, and Capstone Projects

Reading performance has been correlated to time spent in engaged reading. Additionally, positive attitudes toward reading, time spent reading, and reading proficiency have been shown to affect employment options, state of financial wellness, and overall quality of life and health into adulthood. How students contribute to book selection for classroom libraries may critically impact reading performance and attitudes toward reading, as books selected by teachers and school leaders may not be relevant, accessible, or interesting to the students for whom the books are selected. This mixed methods study examined factors around student collaboration in book title selection for the classroom …

Augmentative and alternative communication (AAC) encompasses a wide range of tools, technologies, and intervention techniques that aim to foster and advance communication competence in individuals with complex communication needs (CCN). The individuals who utilize AAC span a range of ages, diagnoses, and cultures—but little data exists regarding prevalence of AAC use and the true nature of the population’s heterogeneity. The purposes of this study were 1. to describe and analyze the population of pediatric AAC users (birth-21) in Missouri and 2. to evaluate the preparation speech-language pathologists (SLPs) have had to serve these learners. To gather this information, a survey …

The Current State Of Collaboration Between Speech-Language Pathologists And Behavior Therapists, Elisabeth Hickle Jan 2019

The Current State Of Collaboration Between Speech-Language Pathologists And Behavior Therapists, Elisabeth Hickle

All Theses, Dissertations, and Capstone Projects

In both speech-language pathology and behavior therapy, best practice is interdisciplinary collaboration (ASHA, 2016; BACB, 2017). However, this is not always the case. Collaboration may be limited or non-existent between these two fields, which may negatively impact client outcomes (Koenig & Gerenser, 2006) as behavior and communication are correlated (Donaldson & Stahmer, 2014; Koenig & Gerenser, 2006). This is especially true in populations such as autism spectrum disorder (ASD) (Donaldson & Stahmer, 2014; Koenig & Gerenser, 2006). This study surveyed certified speech-language pathologists, speech-language pathologist assistants, as well as board-certified behavior analysts, board-certified assistant behavior analysts, and paraprofessionals certified in …

Amplification For People With Aphasia, Devin Lee Fisher Jan 2019

Amplification For People With Aphasia, Devin Lee Fisher

All Theses, Dissertations, and Capstone Projects

Deficits in auditory processing and comprehension can have negative impacts on everyday conversation in people with aphasia (PWA). Comprehension deficits observed in people with aphasia have been compared to individuals with auditory processing disorder (APD). Koohi and colleagues (2017) found that individuals with auditory processing disorder (APD) post-stroke benefitted from use of amplification as it related to their deficits in auditory processing. This preliminary study aims to determine if PWA will benefit from amplification on measures of comprehension and in a broader sense, use of amplification in everyday life. Nine adults with expressive aphasia and 5 neurologically normal controls were …

Language-Action Games: A Probing Activity For Word Finding Accuracy By People With Aphasia, Ethan Kristek Jan 2015

Language-Action Games: A Probing Activity For Word Finding Accuracy By People With Aphasia, Ethan Kristek

All Theses, Dissertations, and Capstone Projects

People with Aphasia (PWA) can demonstrate successful communication despite word finding difficulties in their everyday life. Language action games provide an opportunity for PWA to produce words and verbal utterances they may still be able to use, but they do not typically use in their everyday behavior. The lack of probing activities that mirror real life communication hinders monitoring PWA's level of successful word finding. This study was designed to examine Apples to Apples as a probing activity that provides an opportunity for PWA to demonstrate use of word finding strategies and success of word finding as measured by number …

Preserving The Sponsoring Tradition: A Study Of Catholic Colleges And Universities Founded By Religious Orders, John Michael Pressimone Jan 2013

Preserving The Sponsoring Tradition: A Study Of Catholic Colleges And Universities Founded By Religious Orders, John Michael Pressimone

All Theses, Dissertations, and Capstone Projects

Higher education in the United States was founded within the framework of Christian denominations, their beliefs and customs. Wechsler, Goodchild and Eisenmann (2007) and Rudolph (1990), discuss the role of the church and organized religion in conjunction with the state or local government in the vast majority of the history of higher education as we think of it today. This is particularly true prior to the Land Grant movement sparked by the Morrill Land Grant Act of 1862. However, the growth of the public university system did not signal the end of the founding of church-related colleges and universities. In …

The Development Of A University Library: The University Of Nebraska, 1891-1909, Sharon Mccaslin

All Theses, Dissertations, and Capstone Projects

The period of transition from a frontier university library to a modern, progressive institution is examined in terms of staff, buildings, collection, services, and administrative and financial support. At the end of this period this Nebraska library had a reputation in excess of that indicated either by financial support or collection size. Timely administrative support and pioneering professional librarians developed initial procedures in cataloging, reference, and interlibrary cooperation, which made the Library at the University of Nebraska one of the outstanding research libraries in the West.
