Mark Twain's Study Of The Effects Of Slavery And Its Relationship To Training, Sharon Faye Nielson

This paper presents a study of Mark Twain's treatment of slavery, especially in relation to his theory of training. In his novels Huckleberry Finn, Puddn'head Wilson, The Prince and the Pauper, and A Connecticut Yankee in King Arthur's Court Twain portrays the effects of slavery and training on the personality of the slave and the slaveholder. Twain deals largely with the psychological effects of slavery, which tend to dehumanize both slave and slaveholder, deeply and permanently marking their personalities.

Teachers in elementary schools often assert that they could teach more successfully if no child under six years of age was admitted to first grade. While teaching kindergarten this writer also found many parents of kindergarten age children quite concerned about the "best" age for their child to enter kindergarten. Besides age there seemed to be concern in other areas such as physical size, coordination, and emotional maturity. When conflicts involving interpersonal relationships arise within the school setting, it would appear appropriate to attempt to cope with these conflicts within the framework of the school; particularly the classroom. Many methods of modifying behavior through group procedures have been attempted with varying degrees of success. It was the purpose of this study to investigate the effectiveness of one such method; a fiIm-discussion technique. This program was developed to modify behaviors, attitudes and/or perceptions which interfere with the development of constructive interpersonal relationships within an elementary classroom.

Estimating The Readability Of Primary Books: A Comparative Study Of The Formula Method And Subjective Appraisals, Mary E. Ball

This paper surveys research on the factors that influence the readability of primary books, the efforts that have been made to measure it, and the comparative reliability of subjective judgment and objective analysis of the difficulty of certain primary books. An appraisal by the Fry Readability Graph is recommended for a first approximation of the difficulty of a book, to be followed by judgment decisions regarding concepts, interest and other considerations, to make a suitable match of book to child.

This paper presents a survey of the scheduling, staffing and housing procedures for elementary instrumental music in selected large suburban school districts surrounding the City of Seattle, Washington. Upon comparison with other available studies and a similar survey of the Highline Public Schools, basic recommendations were made for the implementation of three alternate plans for a comprehensive elementary instrumental music program in the Highline Public Schools. The preferred recommended plan involves simultaneously team teaching with instrumental and vocal music specialists.

The problem of this thesis deals with the instruction of trade mathematics. The major problem involves teaching trade mathematics to a heterogeneous group of technical students. A study designed: (1) to determine whether the building level Role Definition produced by the ad hoc Joint Standards Committee was representative of the roles performed by the media personnel, and (2) to determine the role duties of district media personnel. The study showed the Role Definition to be representative and the district level proposal emphasizing administrative and coordinative responsibilities. It was recommended a future study be conducted to further the knowledge of the role/duties of district media personnel.

Two experiments were performed to discover the affect of equalization of positive and negative instances in the presentation of stimuli for Attribute Identification and Rule Learning problems. 56 student volunteers from CWSC were used as subjects. Stimuli were presented to them either according to the traditional truth table representation (four classes for every four trials) or by presenting an equal number of positive and negative instances. The results showed that tasks requiring identification of the relevant attributes among stimulus characteristics were performed better if the stimuli were equalized for positive and negative instances.
