Sex Workers And Hiv/Aids Education: Adult Learning As A Sociocultural Experience, Robert J. Hill

Lave and Wenger’s situated learning paradigm offers that learning is a function of the activities, context and culture in which the learning occurs (i.e., it is socioculturally situated). This study explores HIV/AIDS education for and by sex workers from the perspective that learning is a sociocultural experience that fundamentally involves identification with a community of practice. Sex worker learning communities not only use HIV/AIDS education for safer sex, but as opportunities to make sense of larger life experiences, to resist moralizing discourses, to practice counter-hegemony, to supplement mainstream HIV/AIDS education, and to circumscribe who and what comprise appropriate authority.

Mentoring relationships are socially constructed, and the power that mentors have and exercise within mentoring relationships can be helpful or hurtful to protégés. The purpose of this paper, therefore, is to explore mentoring literature and models from the fields of adult education, general education, and human resource development, examining issues of power in mentoring within this literature. Ways of planning for and promoting mentoring programs that account for power differentials and enhance adult learning and development within mentoring are discussed.

In this paper we explore Alberta’s Out Is In project, which is an arts-informed community education project that we developed to focus on the individual development, social learning, socialization, and inclusion of queer young adults. We discuss activities including a summer 2004 leadership and learning camp that used informal and nonformal learning approaches to achieve the project’s goals.

Abstract: This comparative case study examined docent training programs, at a history museum and art gallery. Data were collected through interviews with museum educators, training and promotional materials, and observations of training. Analysis revealed that the learning theory docents are encouraged to use with visitors is not applied by museum educators during docent training.

This paper presents findings from the first attempt in Malaysia to investigate the participation of adults in informal learning outside workplace and formal educational setting. The study finds participation in informal learning is high. Informal learning through reading activity seems to concentrates around matters related to religion.

The paper argues that a reconceptualization of adult education around lifelong learning and globalization requires a rethinking of curricular and research issues. The paper highlights curricular issues involved in creating in such a reconceptualization. It does this by juxtapositioning the objectives and goals of this “new " focus with the CPAE’s Standards for Graduate Programs. Objectives and goals are suggested that revolve around integrated notions of learning that account for the impact of globalization on learning as inseparable from political and social processes.

Study examined the pivotal factors of a CMS course, which shaped the learners’ development. Disability has been isolated in the specialized applied fields where specific disabilities are overemphasized as explanatory variables and organizing schemes. Using specific disability as an organizing variable continues the objectification and medicalization of disabled people silencing voices and perpetuating invisibility (Linton, 1998). Adult educators conduct research based on specific impairment such as HIV/AIDS (Courtenay, Merriam, & Reeves, 1998), learning disabilities (Jordan, 1996; Ross-Gordon, 1989), Deaf/Hard of Hearing (Clark, 2002), and heart disease (Wise, Yun, & Shaw, 2000). A study was conducted at twelve manufacturing facilities. The data from this study indicated the response of blue-collar workers to imposed technological change can be conceptualized as having seven factors: Disgruntlement, Job-security concerns, Accommodation, Informal learning, Resistance, Discussion, and Formal learning. Cluster analysis of the data identified three types of blue collar workers: Complainers, Team players, and Loners. In this study, membership in the Team players cluster increased as a function of age.

Adult education instructors and administrators, who typically are not members of the hip hop generation, often have little knowledge and understanding of rap music (a.k.a. gansta rap) and hip hop culture, and consequently do not take the black popular cultural phenomenon seriously as it relates to adult education.
