Technology And Teacher Preparation In Exemplary Institutions: 1994 To 2003, Mark J. Hofer

Articles

In a 1994 study commissioned by the Congressional Office of Technology Assessment, Mergendoller, Johnston, Rockman, & Willis (1994) examined four exemplary institutions to identify their approaches to integrating technology into teacher education. A decade later, the field would benefit from a comparison of current approaches of infusing technology into teacher education to the 1994 findings. This study examines the approaches of the first seven teacher education programs to receive the ISTE NETS Distinguished Achievement Award. Current approaches to the process are outlined, including the identification of the key factors impacting their implementation. A comparison of the 1994 and the present …

Equity And Technology, Jamel K. Donnor Aug 2005

Equity And Technology, Jamel K. Donnor

School of Education Book Chapters

"Technology has always occupied an important space within the American education system. Serving mainly as an instructional aid for the teacher, technology has varied in form beginning with the blackboard (and textbook) to more advance devices such as the radio, film, television, and videotape recorder (VCR). The introduction of technology to schools in many ways is part of the discussion on the purpose of education. Debates on the purpose of education have varied from socializing students to the cultural values of American society by emphasizing the precepts of democracy (e.g., citizenship); preparation for the workforce; to the development of a …

An Exploratory Study Of The Experiences Of Gay, Lesbian And Bisexual Fraternity And Sorority Members Revisited, Douglas N. Case, Grahaeme A. Hesp, Charles G. Eberly

Journal of Sorority and Fraternity Life Research and Practice

The lead author questioned over 500 self identified gay, lesbian, and bisexual (GLB) fraternity and sorority members to assess their reasons for joining; how their membership affected their sexual identity development and intimate relationships; the degree of homophobia and heterosexism encountered; how sexual orientation affected the quality of their fraternal experiences; and the level of acceptance or rejection they faced. Many respondents were in the early phases of sexual identity development at the time they joined, and most chose to conceal their sexual orientation from their fellow members. This study details the reactions from fellow members, assesses satisfaction with the …

A Content Analysis Of A Decade Of Fraternity/Sorority Scholarship In Student Affairs Research Journals, William R. Molasso

Journal of Sorority and Fraternity Life Research and Practice

The author used content analysis research methodologies to investigate the discourse on fraternities/sororities in the two primary journals of the student affairs profession, the Journal of College Student Development and the NASPA Journal. In research published in these student affairs journals over the last decade, fraternities/sororities were underrepresented. Additionally, the published research was of insufficient depth, and focused on narrow issues. This content analysis allows us to understand better the nature and scope of fraternity/sorority research in the primary student affairs literature over the last decade.

Racialized Technology: Computers, Commodification, And “Cyber-Race", Jamel K. Donnor

School of Education Book Chapters

"When Beverly Gordon remarked that the twenty-first century would be marked by a 'battle for control over who would educate minorities within Western societies and the nature of that education' ( 1990, p. 88), I do not think she or anyone else could have imagined what would be the role of information technologies in this fight. The U.S. Department of Education in 1999 hosted a forum entitled 'The Future of Technology in Education: Envisioning the Future.' The proceedings of the forum resulted in the identification of 'emerging priorities' (p. 1 ). These priorities include: ( 1) All students will be …

Analysis Of Data -Based Decision-Making: The Perceptions And Roles Of Teachers And Administrators, Richard Byron Bishop

Dissertations, Theses, and Masters Projects

Educators are required by federal and state mandates to use data in order to improve student achievement and teacher performance in public schools. The public's faith in public schools is dependent upon the school organization's ability to respond to the data and to make changes that will improve schools. The perceptions of members of the school organization regarding barriers and facilitative strategies that either hinder or promote the effective use of data, respectively, inherently impact the effective use of data. The purpose of this study was to examine the perceptions of school staff members regarding the use of data to …

Is It Worth It? Deciding If Technology Is Worth The Time, Effort, And Money, Judi Harris Jan 2005

Is It Worth It? Deciding If Technology Is Worth The Time, Effort, And Money, Judi Harris

School of Education Articles

In this article I offer advice to help you decide which curriculum-based instructional activities to attempt to integrate into classrooms, with which students and when to do so. In making these practical suggestions, I am referring more to what is than what could be. Deciding which uses of education technologies are most worth the additional time, effort and expense doesn’t have to be guesswork. By weighing the learning outcome probabilities of new technology-based strategies against the success of existing pedagogical techniques we can decide, on a case-by-case basis, whether each new learning activity possibility is worth it.

Our Agenda For Technology Integration: It's Time To Choose, Judi Harris

School of Education Articles

One of two primary reasons why many—if not most—large-scale technology integration efforts are perceived to have failed is technocentrism and pedagogical dogmatism. In this editorial, I offer thoughts about each of these phenomena and invite you to respond.

Digital Moviemaking—The Harmonization Of Technology, Pedagogy And Content, Mark J. Hofer, Kathleen Owings Swan

Articles

Technology integration in K-12 classrooms resembles the “hammer in search of a nail” phenomenon. While increasingly powerful and accessible technology tools certainly offer promising potential to impact teaching and learning, their implementation can often be contrived or incongruent with classroom practice and discipline-specific pedagogy. Digital moviemaking provides a unique opportunity to connect powerful, yet accessible, technology integration with core content and pedagogical practice within specific academic disciplines. This paper explores the digital disconnect between student use of technology in and out of school, the typical problems with integrating technology in K-12 schools, the potential of digital moviemaking, an examination of …

Instructional Uses Of Instant Messaging (Im) During Classroom Lectures, Mabel B. Kinzie, Stephen D. Whitaker, Mark J. Hofer

Articles

Can “Information Age” learners effectively multi-task in the classroom? Can synchronous classroom activities be designed around conceptually related tasks, to encourage deeper processing and greater learning of classroom content? This research was undertaken to begin to address these questions. In this study, we explored the use of instructionally-related instant messaging (IM) discussions during undergraduate university lectures. Over the course of three weeks, students practiced with and then employed hand-held computers for brief, synchronous class discussions in response to assigned questions related to the lectures. Students were observed during these sessions, and students and the instructors were interviewed separately afterwards. The …

Framing The Role Of Leader: How Community College Presidents Construct Their Leadership, Pamela L. Eddy Jan 2005

Framing The Role Of Leader: How Community College Presidents Construct Their Leadership, Pamela L. Eddy

Articles

Presidents are one of the most studied of administrative roles, yet little research occurs on understanding how these leaders construct their own leadership. Thus, the question guiding the research reported here concerned how community college presidents cognitively framed their leadership roles. This study involved the interviewing of 9 community college presidents. Findings uncovered 3 themes. The first theme identified how the presidents' underlying mental maps guided decision-making and leadership on campus. The second theme linked the basic cognitive orientation of the presidents with on-going situated cognition in their new work settings. Learning evolved based on environmental factors. The final category …

Developmental Strategies And Styles And Their Measurement, Wenyu Bai Jan 2005

Developmental Strategies And Styles And Their Measurement, Wenyu Bai

Dissertations, Theses, and Masters Projects

Developmental styles and strategies (DSS) are preferences and repeated patterns in intentional self-development. A taxonomy of DSS based on the convergence of talent development and Sternberg's Triarchic Model of Intelligences was proposed to distinguish school learners, street learners, talent developers (specialists), and all-knowers (generalists). This study explored the reliability of the researcher-developed Educational Developmental Style and Strategy Scale, the relationships of age, gender, birth order, ethnicity, and SES to developmental DSS adoption, and the characteristics of five types of DSS adopters (i.e., street learning specialists, street learning generalists, school learning specialists, school learning generalists, the neutral group). Eighty out of …
