Students can learn to spell better by recognizing and applying letter patterns, instead of memorizing twenty new words each week. Andover's Integrated Reading System (AIRS), a mastery learning language arts program, contains a spelling module called "structural skills" that helps children learn in this way. It is based upon the generalizations of eight structural skills: plurals, derived words, possessives, contractions, root words, hearing syllables, syllabication, and prefixes/suffixes.

If children experiment with the idea of a circle containing 360 degrees while in a Logo environment, they will understand how to use those ideas as tools that they can apply to other problems over their lifetime. How redundant do your students' vocabularies seem now that school has begun again? Are you looking for ways to motivate them to use new words in their writing? If so, perhaps you might encourage them to take stock (quite literally) in certain of their favorite words. Wise teachers capitalize upon childrens' natural interests and preferred activities. Why not make a set of polygons that can be drawn to Euler's specifications? Challenge your students not only to solve the puzzles with the turtle, but to try to see the pattern in the "magic". Most importantly, encourage them to create Euler puzzles of their own for their classmates to solve.

Have you ever seen a piece of "ASCII art"? They're pictures made up of text characters. You've probably heard that one pictures is worth a thousand words. In this case, a 256 x 192-pixel graphic is worth (at least) 350 text characters, which, in turn, can facilitate many new logo connections.
