Disspelling A Myth, Judi Harris
Disspelling A Myth, Judi Harris
School of Education Articles
Students can learn to spell better by recognizing and applying letter patterns, instead of memorizing twenty new words each week. Andover's Integrated Reading System (AIRS), a mastery learning language arts program, contains a spelling module called "structural skills" that helps children learn in this way. It is based upon the generalizations of eight structural skills: plurals, derived words, possessives, contractions, root words, hearing syllables, syllabication, and prefixes/suffixes.
Turtling Around In Circles, Judi Harris
Turtling Around In Circles, Judi Harris
School of Education Articles
If children experiment with the idea of a circle containing 360 degrees while in a Logo environment, they will understand how to use those ideas as tools that they can apply to other problems over their lifetime. It will provide a long-awaited "aha" of comprehension to students, and the intuitive recognition of a very powerful idea.
Taking Stock In Vocabulary, Judi Harris
Taking Stock In Vocabulary, Judi Harris
School of Education Articles
How redundant do your students' vocabularies seem now that school has begun again? Are you looking for ways to motivate them to use new words in their writing? If so, perhaps you might encourage them to take stock (quite literally) in certain of their favorite words. A simple set of Logo Writer tools would take the tedium out of a stock market simulation share maintenance process, allowing students to concentrate on using new words and phrases and exploring probability and mathematical problem-solving strategies.

Over the years, Logo and turtle geometry provided a rather durable transitional object. When Logo first experienced tremendous popularity, there arose a debate as to whether Logo was the only valid transitional object that could exist on the computer. This might be termed the phase of Logo as Religion.

Have you ever wondered why more men don't get manicures, or why only women go through menopause? Might it be more appropriate for women to get womencures and go through womenpause? Perhaps some playful awomendments to our dictionaries may encourage students to experiwoment with syllabication and new vocabulary words in pure Logo fashion.
Euler And The Turtle, Judi Harris
Euler And The Turtle, Judi Harris
School of Education Articles
Wise teachers capitalize upon childrens' natural interests and preferred activities. Why not make a set of polygons that can be drawn to Euler's specifications? Challenge your students not only to solve the puzzles with the turtle, but to try to see the pattern in the "magic". Most importantly, encourage them to create Euler puzzles of their own for their classmates to solve.

Prior to the team offering brief couples psychotherapy for assistance in the resolution of the pain problem, the team needed to assess the pain couples' relationship variables. Adherence to health care providers' recommendations is typically minimal unless all participants agree that specific treatment is warranted. There appears to be a lack of understanding among patients, their …

The importance of participation in budgeting for managers and its relevance to job satisfaction has been the subject of a number of studies over the last several decades. The second hypothesis predicted a significant relationship between the leader behavior variables, consideration and initiating structure and the job satisfaction variables, supervision and work while controlling for the effects of the demographic variables age, sex, race, educational level and length of service. The theoretical …
