Exploring The Perspectives Of Infant/Toddler-Pk4 Teachers On Attaining An Associate Degree In Early Childhood Education, Isabel Lainez Furutan
Exploring The Perspectives Of Infant/Toddler-Pk4 Teachers On Attaining An Associate Degree In Early Childhood Education, Isabel Lainez Furutan
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
AbstractResearchers have found young children’s academic skills and life outcomes are correlated to teachers’ postsecondary education. Despite this, 60% of infant/toddler-PK4 teachers who work in center-based settings in the District of Columbia do not have postsecondary education beyond the high school level. The purpose of this basic qualitative study was to explore the perspectives of infant/toddler-PK4 teachers from the District of Columbia working in center-based settings on the challenges of attaining an associate degree in early childhood education and the support needed throughout the process. Guided by Lewin’s three-step model of change theory, the perspectives of 12 participants with a …
Stories Of Licensed Counseling Supervisors Who Identify As Wounded Healers, Carolyn Litteral
Stories Of Licensed Counseling Supervisors Who Identify As Wounded Healers, Carolyn Litteral
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
Although a large percentage of counselors who are wounded healers eventually become clinical counseling supervisors, little is known about the effects on clinical supervision. Counseling supervisors have the responsibility of gatekeeping, managing client care, and modeling counseling for counselors-in-training; the process is likely affected by woundedness as is the counseling process. The purpose of the current qualitative narrative study was to identify the stories of wounded healers as clinical counseling supervisors to recognize how supervision is affected and influenced by being a wounded healer. The data were analyzed using the theoretical lens of existentialism and the conceptual framework of the …
High School Teachers’ Perspectives On Formative Assessment In The Virtual Learning Environment, Tiffany Mcbean
High School Teachers’ Perspectives On Formative Assessment In The Virtual Learning Environment, Tiffany Mcbean
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
Formative assessment in the virtual learning environment is a beneficial complement to teacher pedagogy and student learning. But there is little research on high school teachers’ perspectives on the use of formative assessment in the virtual learning environment. The purpose of this basic qualitative study was to address this research gap. The conceptual framework was Black and Wiliam’s theory of formative assessment. Two research questions guided the study. The first addressed high school teachers’ perspectives on formative assessments in the virtual learning environment. The second addressed how teachers used formative assessment in the virtual learning environment. Semistructured interviews were conducted …
Viewpoints Of Classroom Teachers On Educational Issues Of Students With Interrupted Formal Education, Farah Merzier-Baudin
Viewpoints Of Classroom Teachers On Educational Issues Of Students With Interrupted Formal Education, Farah Merzier-Baudin
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
AbstractMost research on students with interrupted formal education (SIFE) and English language learners (ELLs) documents their struggle with higher attrition rates and behavioral issues in high school. This qualitative study was conducted to examine high school teachers’ perspectives working with SIFE/ELLs in the classroom. Vygotsky’s sociocultural theory (SCT) indicated that students benefit from classrooms with high social interaction among all classroom participants and appropriate scaffolding of learning materials. Although SCT and most research focused on the students’ perspectives, this research focused on teachers’ perspectives. Data were collected from semistructured, open-ended interviews with 20 participants who teach or work with SIFE/ELLs. …
Employer Perceptions Of The Skills Gap In College Graduates’ Written Communication, Julie Minnaugh
Employer Perceptions Of The Skills Gap In College Graduates’ Written Communication, Julie Minnaugh
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
U.S. employers have reported that many college graduates are underprepared in written communication when hired and that lack of preparedness hinders these graduates’ employment success. Higher education institution (HEI) administrators need information regarding which writing skills should be taught across the curriculum to improve student outcomes. The purpose of this study was to investigate employers’ perspectives on the written communication skills gap that hinders college graduates from being successful in their professional practice. Swales’s six characteristics of a discourse community provided a conceptual lens for the study, as graduates commencing employment represent newcomers to a discourse community. A basic qualitative …

Adult Learning And Motivation Of Students Previously Involved In The U.S. Criminal Justice System, Saudia Krystal Mohammed
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
Motivation is an important factor in the overall success, achievement potential, and capabilities of students, especially adult learners. For individuals who are currently in the criminal justice system, motivator is a key factor in degree obtainment, research shows. However, there is limited research on adult learners who have previously been involved in the U.S. criminal justice system and the motivational factors that led to their academic reengagement. The purpose of this study was to gain a better understanding of those motivational factors. The theoretical framework that underpinned this study was the transformative learning theory, which centers on how learners make …
Effect Of Single-Gender Education On Girls' Success In Math, Joseph Moody
Effect Of Single-Gender Education On Girls' Success In Math, Joseph Moody
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
Prior research suggested that all students were not treated equally in the educational setting and that boys perform better than girls on standardized tests. The purpose of this quantitative study was to examine how class composition affected performance on the math section of the Educational Records Bureau (ERB) test and Preliminary SAT (PSAT) among girls who took single-gender classes and girls who remained in coed math classes. Gender essentialism and gender constructivism are important to the study of single-gender education because the foundation of single-gender education is in understanding brain development to design a classroom that allows for differences to …

The purpose of this qualitative interpretive descriptive study, guided by Duchscher’s theory and the technology adaptation model 2, was to understand the experiences of new graduate nurses who transitioned to practice utilizing video-based conference software for nursing orientation. Twelve new graduate nurses were interviewed using virtual conferencing software. Data were analyzed using interpretive description and then were …
Financial Aid As A Predictor For Retention Of First-Year Black Male Community College Students, Malcom Jamar Morgan-Petty
Financial Aid As A Predictor For Retention Of First-Year Black Male Community College Students, Malcom Jamar Morgan-Petty
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
AbstractBlack male students are retained in higher education at less than half the rate of their Hispanic and White counterparts. At Southwestern Community College (SWCC, a pseudonym), there were indicators that the amount of financial aid received was related to retention; however, the extent of the relationship was unknown. The purpose of this nonexperimental quantitative correlational study was to examine the relationship between the amount of financial aid received and the retention of first-to-second-year Black male students at SWCC. Bean and Metzner’s model of nontraditional undergraduate student attrition provided the theoretical foundation. The research question sought to clarify the extent …

University Interdisciplinary Linked Block Schedules And Developmental Student Success, Linda S. Reeves-Wymer
University Interdisciplinary Linked Block Schedules And Developmental Student Success, Linda S. Reeves-Wymer
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
Developmental education is the starting point for many 1st-year college students, especially from underrepresented, low-income, and first-generation populations. One such 1st-year program linked block-scheduled academic skill-development courses with a required interdisciplinary general education science course where instruction was provided simultaneously in a lecture format to college-ready nondevelopmental students and developmental students in three skill-development courses: reading, writing, and combined reading/writing. Although this program had existed for over 20 years, the effectiveness of the program, meaning whether the linked skill-development courses were associated with academic success, had not been assessed. Guided by Tinto’s integration theory, a causal comparative design with the …
