Walking The Talk: Promoting Middle School Philosophy By Embracing Student Voices, Rick Marlatt

Middle Grades Review

This practitioner perspective responds to recent scholarship calling for reinvigorating middle level education by suggesting that the purposeful inclusion of student voices in collaborative learning activities can help educators champion the academic and social growth of early adolescents. The recent practicum experience of a preservice candidate who prioritized the voices of her students illustrates the promotion of democratic education, innovation, and social justice in middle level education.

Computational Thinking Integration Into Middle Grades Science Classrooms: Strategies For Meeting The Challenges, Danielle Cadieux Boulden, Eric Wiebe, Bita Akram, Osman Aksit, Philip Sheridan Buffum, Bradford Mott, Kristy Elizabeth Boyer, James Lester

Middle Grades Review

This paper reports findings from the efforts of a university-based research team as they worked with middle school educators within formal school structures to infuse computer science principles and computational thinking practices. Despite the need to integrate these skills within regular classroom practices to allow all students the opportunity to learn these essential 21st Century skills, prior practice has been to offer these learning experiences outside of mainstream curricula where only a subset of students have access. We have sought to leverage elements of the research-practice partnership framework to achieve our project objectives of integrating computer science and computational thinking …

Middle Grades Democratic Education In Neoliberal Times: Examining Youth Social Action Projects As A Path Forward, Jessica Demink-Carthew

Middle Grades Review

Although democratic education has long been considered a cornerstone of the developmentally responsive middle school model, current neoliberal priorities in education pose a particular threat to the democratic purpose of education. Due to their emphasis on student voice and civic engagement, youth social action projects present one opportunity to preserve democratic education as a focal point of the middle school concept. In this article, I offer a case description of a middle grades youth social action project. Incorporating student perspectives, I then critically examine the extent to which the project was successful in its goal of promoting student voice and …

Policing And Middle School: An Evaluation Of A Statewide School Resource Officer Policy, Kenneth Alonzo Anderson

Middle Grades Review

This study investigates the effectiveness of North Carolina Senate Bill 402, Section 8.36 – Grants for School Resource Officers in Elementary and Middle Schools, which provides matching state funds to districts for use in middle and elementary schools. Using generalized difference-in-difference and negative binomial hurdle regression designs, seven years of data—inclusive of 110 districts and 471 middle schools—were analyzed to assess the effectiveness of the state-funded SRO program. “Is Sarah A Bully Or A Friend?”: Examining Students’ Text-Based Written Expressions Of Bullying, Elizabeth M. Hughes, Sandra Quiñones

Middle Grades Review

Bullying has been recognized as a complex phenomenon with potential for serious negative outcomes. For this research, we used a critical literacy lens to explore bullying within the context of language, power and context. This research shares qualitative analysis of letters students wrote to adult pen pals after reading a fictional book with a plot addressing …

Experiences Of Female Refugee Students From Burma In Multicultural Middle School Classrooms, Matthew C. Mcparker

Middle Grades Review

In middle school, adolescents are particularly focused on peer interaction to help form their identities. For marginalized students, especially refugees, peer interaction, peer interaction is especially important. To be successful in schools and gain cultural and social capital, refugee students must learn and internalize the specific norms of their classrooms. In multicultural settings, students have ample opportunities for intercultural interactions, which can help refugee students navigate their new settings and become more successful. One of the largest refugee groups entering the United States recently is from Burma. Refugee students face a daunting set of challenges, from language and cultural differences …

Qualitative Research On Youths’ Social Media Use: A Review Of The Literature, Mardi Schmeichel, Hilary E. Hughes, Mel Kutner

Middle Grades Review

In this article we explore how educational researchers report empirical qualitative research about young people’s social media use. We frame the overall study with an understanding that social media sites contribute to the production of neoliberal subjects, and we draw on Foucauldian discourse theories and the understanding that how researchers explain topics and concepts produces particular ways of thinking about the world while excluding others. Findings include that 1) there is an absence of attention to the structure and function of social media platforms; 2) adolescents are positioned in problematic, developmental ways, and 3) the over-representation of girls and young …

Crossing Mgls With The Middle Grades Research Agenda: A Guide For Researchers, Mark W. Olofson, Penny A. Bishop

Middle Grades Review

For the past several years, leaders in middle grades education research have strengthened their call for more methodologically robust quantitative research to address important questions in the field. Recently, two important routes towards addressing this call have emerged: the Middle Grades Longitudinal Study from the National Center for Education Statistics, and a new research agenda from the Middle Level Education Research Special Interest Group of the American Educational Research Association. In this paper, we conduct a content analysis of the items in the forthcoming longitudinal study in light of the extant research agenda. Results indicate that research questions in eight …

A Call For Self-Study In Middle Level Teacher Education, Karynne L. M. Kleine, Kristina N. Falbe, Joanne L. Previts

Middle Grades Review

To promote dialogue and in response to calls for rigorous, large-scale, empirical studies as the standard that will move the field of middle level education forward, a collaborative of middle level teacher researchers submit three counterpoints to the appeals for consideration by the research community: 1) the power of the insights the authors’ gained from using the alternative research method of self-study; 2) the authenticity of using alternative research methods that mirror the uniqueness of a field predicated on the distinctiveness of educating diverse young adolescents; and 3) a reframing of “generalizability” from a “results” perspective to one of generalizability …

Internationalization Of Higher Education In Turmoil, Patrick Arsenault

The Vermont Connection

The goal of this piece is to provide an overview of the internationalization of the University of Missouri using historical artifacts from the institution’s archives. As a result of bringing together these artifacts, the author identifies three distinct internationalization stages that demonstrate where the institution is currently situated. The University of Missouri’s internationalization process has been slow and cumulative, like its peer institutions, until recently. However, the author argues that current events, including travel bans and uncertainty around immigration policies, have disrupted this pattern and created turmoil and uncertainty.

Lessons From Women Leaders: The Impact Of Professional Development, Jennifer Wegner Apr 2018

Lessons From Women Leaders: The Impact Of Professional Development, Jennifer Wegner

The Vermont Connection

Professional development is learner-centered, where the responsibility to engage in further educational experiences belongs to the individual and is a critical way to prepare for career advancement. In higher education, cisgender women do not hold the majority of chief student affairs officers (CSAO) positions, which is unexpected given their representation in entry and mid-level positions (Shea Gasser, 2014). This article reviews a grounded theory study conducted to better understand the phenomenon of professional development experiences of women CSAOs and how professional development impacts career ascension of women in student affairs.

This poem speaks to more than just the field of student affairs; it speaks to anyone who is in need of hope. To you.

The Relevance Of Double Consciousness Among Black Males In College, Kevin L. Wright

The Vermont Connection

“The Souls of Black Folk,” by W. E. B. Du Bois (1903) is a means to explain the experience of the Negro in the late 1800s. Many of the attitudes and perceptions of Black people are still present today. In Du Bois’ work, he discussed his coined term, double consciousness; Du Bois indicated that it is a curse along with a gift, a most unwelcome one. He discussed the racial binary of what a Black person experiences in society compared to White people. The experiences a Black man has in a predominantly White society can mirror the experiences of a …

Where’S My Queer Bbq?: Supporting Queer Students At Historically Women’S Colleges, Sarah D. Dews

The Vermont Connection

The experiences of Queer students at institutions of higher education have long been the subject of scholarship. Scholars explored research on campus climate, experience, and identity development. In the past, scholarship on historically women’s institutions explored leadership, history, and sexuality. However, the experiences of Queer students on historically women’s campuses are largely unstudied. As a graduate of a historically women’s institution who identifies as a Queer woman, I will reflect on my own experience of being a Queer student at a women’s college, and identify where Queer students receive the support they need to succeed.

Get Out Of That Chair: How Fat Professionals Fit In Student Affairs, J.A. Silvis, A.J. Santos

The Vermont Connection

In the authors’ experiences as fat, queer, people of color, they exist in a student affairs bubble that reminds them that their bodies are abject. They are forced to sort out when is it their sexualities, their skin, or their size that is the reasoning for their silence in higher education. They force themselves to ask, “when is it about just being fat?” while questioning if their fatness can be separated from their brownness and queerness. “Get Out Of That Chair: How Fat Professionals Fit in Student Affairs” creates a dialogue and discussion about how bodies are policed in the …
