The purpose of this study was to compare black and white females' perceptions of verbal aggression. Eighty black and 80 white female participants read a short dialogue of two female college roommates engaged in a verbal interaction. One of these women was arbitrarily selected as the identified aggressor; the other, the target. Pilot studies had established that participants similar to those used in this study thought that the dialogue contained verbal aggression and that each of the persons was equally verbally aggressive. The identification of children who are gifted is common in schools of the United States. High I.Q. and achievement scores are traditionally used. This study explored the adequacy of these variables in mathematics education. Based on the Renzulli model for giftedness, the study assessed problem solving ability, and task commitment. Only students identified as having above average general ability were selected as subjects. Eighty-seven sixth graders were selected from three Knox County, Tennessee, middle schools to form six groups. Mathematics educators and psychologists blame "math anxiety" for affecting mathematics learning, performance, and enrollment, and, subsequently, choice of college major and career. Researchers have yet to agree on prevalence, stability, and effects of math anxiety.

This study (1) investigated the prevalence and intensity of math anxiety in college students (as a whole, by major, and by sex), (2) determined the stability of math anxiety over time, and (3) investigated those background and experimental factors related to its occurrence in college students, using data gathered on 173 college students in mathematics, education, and English classrooms. Functional properties of Thual hull-less whole-grain barley flours milled from barley grown in two locations were studied. Proximate composition of Tennessee-produced barley flour approximated that of whole-wheat flour; flour milled from Alaska-produced barley had reduced protein and increased carbohydrate plus ash levels. Alaska barley flour had higher levels of the amino acids detrimental to loaf volume, whereas higher levels of amino acids related to increased loaf volume were present in the Tennessee barley flour. Photomicrographs of flour components revealed a bimodal starch distribution. Starch granule shapes approximated those of wheat. Adhering matter was present.

Regulation of transmethylation by lowering the molar ratio of S-adenosylmethionine to S-sdenosylhomocysteine (SAM: SAH ration) was studied. Reduction of the ration in vitro caused a decrease in the activities of rat liver thiopurine methyltransferase (TPMT), thiol methyl-transferase (TMT), and protien(lysine)methyltransferase (PLMT). Furthermore, rats injected with D,L-homocysteine thiolactone had a reduction in the hepatic SAM:SAH ration, as well as a decrease in the activities of TPMT and PLMT, but not TMT, in liver.

Reduction of the hepatic SAM:SAH ratio in rats fed a pyridoxine-deficient diet resulted in a decrease in the activity of PLMT, but not TPMT and TMT, in liver. …

Teacher shortages are predicted in all areas of public education. These shortages are already a reality for science and mathematics. The overall purpose of this study was to identify major workplace variables that affect job satisfaction within educational organizations. Once identified these variables were utilized to construct an intervention framework grounded in the principles of the Quality of Work-life (QWL) paradigm. The purpose of this study was to investigate some of the basic tenets of the Neuro-Linguistic Programming (NLP) eye movement model which state that specific eye movements are indicative of when a person is thinking visually, auditorily, and/or kinesthetically. Forty-eight graduate and undergraduate students from educational psychology classes were interviewed and were asked to concentrate on a single thought while their eye movements were videotaped. They were subsequently asked if their thoughts contained visual, auditory, and/or kinesthetic components. The purposes of this study were to determine if there were any consensus among superintendents, chairpersons of the boards of education, and principals in North Carolina relative to the perceived importance of teaching competencies for the secondary teacher and to identify the competencies considered most and least critical to secondary teacher job performance. The North Carolina Teacher Performance Appraisal Instrument competencies were used for this study. The 34 competencies were grouped under 10 major functions which were also analyzed for this study.

The purpose of this study was to examine the feasibility of developing a decision support system--a set of computerized information management tools to collect, store, analyze, and report information--to aid in the selection of classroom textbooks. The study was designed to assess the economic, technical, and operational feasibility using a management information systems model. Teacher Time-On-Task: An Analysis Of Classroom Time Use For Two City School Systems, 1985, Suzanne Thomas Richards

Teacher use of classroom time was the focus of this 1985 study. An analysis of on- and off-task behavior of 38 randomly selected elementary teachers in grades three, four, and five comprised the data for the research. The effect of interruptions, both inside and outside the classroom, were analyzed as well as teacher on- and off-task percents by system and across grade levels.

The study showed that a majority of teachers were on-task over 70 percent of the instructional day, averaging just over 74 percent of on-task behavior. Interruptions accounted for a substantial portion of off-task behavior for some teachers …

The purposes of this study were to: (1) identify segments displaying different information search patterns among employed purchasers of apparel; (2) to determine the consumer, situational, product, and market characteristics that correlate with each segment; and (3) to develop an exploratory framework of the processes which produce characteristics of information search patterns.

A random sample of 3,000 female consumers, age 25-44, was sent questionnaires resulting in a 47 percent return rate (n=1410). Only employed women were used for this research (n=1034).

The main purpose of this study was to test for possible differences in the level of self-actualization of counselor trainees who are at the four levels of counselor development as described by the counselor complexity model (Stoltenberg, 1981). Secondary questions involved the relationships between level of counselor development and the variables of trainees' perceptions of themselves and amount of trainees' counseling experience. To examine the relationships between self-concept and food- and nutrition-related behavior, information was collected from 153 single women ages 18-35. Participants were contacted through their places of employment and represented a variety of occupations. Each participant had an educational level between a high school diploma and a four-year college degree.

Participants completed a questionnaire requesting information about demographic facts, attitudes toward self, attitudes toward the importance of food and nutrition, nutrition knowledge, and health habits. Mathematics achievement scores of Chapter I students receiving only traditional instruction were compared to mathematics achievement scored of Chapter I students using computer assisted instruction. The effects of the level and duration of feed restriction on the in vitro activities of hepatic drug metabolizing enzyme system were examined in male weanling Sprague Dawley rats fed ad libitum or feed restricted at 15%, 30% and 45% for a period of one to five weeks (Experiment I). Increasing levels and duration of feed restriction resulted in significant progressive increases in hepatic microsomal protein, cytochrome P-450 content and the in vitro activities of microsomal aniline hydroxylase. p-chloro-methly-aniline(PCMA)N- demethylase and p-nitrophenol UDP-glucuronyl transferase activities were unaltered by the feed restriction while cytochrome c reductase activity was significantly decreased. A person's quality of life has been assumed by some researchers to be related to material and achieved status or to the material conditions of life by other researchers. Individuals' perception of the quality of their lives, however, is an experience of satisfaction. Weanling female rats were fed diets containing one of three levels of Ca (0.3, 0.6 or 0.9%) and one of four levels of Cd (0, 1, 5 or 10 ppm) in the drinking water. One half of each group was bred first as adolescents (55 days) and the other half as mature (110 days) females. Approximately 10 animals from each group were sacrificed after the first pregnancy and the remaining animals after the fourth pregnancy. High speed melt spinning of linear, branched, and high molecular weight poly(ethylene terephthalate) (PET) polymers using a pneumatic drawdown device was carried out in this study. Characterization of the structure of final spun fibers of each polymer and the structure development along the spinline for different mass throughputs and take-up velocities were studied.

The final spun fibers were characterized with various techniques: birefringence, density, wide angle x-ray scattering (WAXS), differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), shrinkage, and tensile testing. Top rounds from steers fed grain 0, 28, 56, or 84 days were removed and flaked in a Urschel Comitrol containing a plate with 1.9-cm openings. Fat (beef plates approximately 55% fat) from animals fed grain was finely ground. Flaked meat and fat were mixed and formed into 227-g restructured steaks with 15%, 20%, or 25% fat. Steaks were cooked in a microwave oven on a preheated browning dish or broiled in a conventional oven to an internal temperature of 73oC ± 2oC or 73oC, respectively.

The lipotropic and hypolipidemic effects of carnitine and its precursors, namely lysine (Lys) and methionine (Met), was examined in male Sprague-Dawley rats fed ethanol as 36% of the total calories for a duration of 56 days (Experiment I). Ethanol produced significant hepatic steatosis and hypertriglyceridemia as evidenced from elevated concentrations of total lipids, triglycerides, cholesterols, and phospholipids. Supplementation of the ethanol diet with 1.0% D,L-carnitine and 0.5% L-Lys plus 0.2% L-Met significantly reduced ethanol-induced elevation of the various lipid classes with the exception of free fatty acids. The triglyceride contents in liver and plasma were inversely related to the concentrations …

This study investigated the response of premature infants to parenteral amino acids and related that response to gender, amino acid concentration at birth, amino acid status prior to infusion, postnatal age, caloric intake, weight, intake of individual amino acids, and gestational age. Plasma samples were collected from 21 premature infants (gestational age 31. 2 ± 2.3 weeks) before the initiation of amino acid infusion and after 24 hours of infusion. Mixed umbilical cord samples were available from 10 of these infants. Energy and time conservation in food preparation is of concern to consumers and the microwave oven is one appliance that has been credited with energy and time savings. Although consumption of fish by consumers has been increasing, little has been reported on the microwave-cooking of fish. Therefore, an investigation was designed to compare the energy requirements of, the effects of heating on, and the acceptability of turbot, an underutilized species of fish, cooked in a microwave oven with that baked conventionally.

Specific attention was also given to a select group of sociodemographic variables.
