In 1951 the Department of Educational Administration and Supervision of the University of Tennessee in cooperation with the Southern States Cooperative Program in Educational Administration (succeeded in 1956 by the Associated Programs in Educational Administration) initiated a research project designed to improve the preparation program of the Department and to provide a basis for improving the selection of students. The research staff at the University of Tennessee has largely centered its activities around an attempt to define the characteristics needed for effective educational administration.

Summary: The purpose of this study was to reduce some of the confusion that appeared to exist in the areas of industrial arts. It was believed that some of the confusion may be contributed to traditional forces, but many of the difficulties stem from confusion within the more basic elements surrounding the nature of man and the nature of society. If an understanding can be conveyed within this realm, much of the existing confusion could be eliminated.

Generally speaking, the central aim of the project was, and is, the improvement of educational leadership in the Southern States Region. Statement of the Problem: The problem in this study was to attempt to identify patterns of behavioral characteristics of selected effective and ineffective practicing school administrators. The study in part attempts to answer the following question: Do selected effective practicing school administrators exhibit patterns of behavioral characteristics which tend to differentiate them from selected ineffective practicing school administrators? The purpose of this study is to identify and appraise those phases of the elementary school curricular experiences that can best be realized in a camping situation. Educators are on the alert to find methods, procedures and experiences for providing enriched learning experiences that contribute significantly to the total growth, development and adjustment of boys and girls. Some feel that the classroom is too confining and the program too stereotyped to adequately prepare children for participation in modern society.
