Teacher preparation programs prepare teacher candidates (TC) with clinically rich field experiences. These programs prepare teachers to teach groups of students that are culturally, racially, and linguistically diverse. The TCs that participated in this study were in the first semester of the elementary program and were concerned with an experience that would be remote. COVID-19 impacted the experiences of the TCs by removing the field component during the Fall 2020 semester. The candidates were not provided access in the elementary schools to complete the practical experiences due to the districts’ pandemic guidelines. Due to the lack of …

Honorable Mention Winner

ABSTRACT The OER-Immersive Multimedia Materials Project aims at the design and development of Open Educational Resources (OER) in the classroom as a model to integrate community-based learning and undergraduate research in lower and upper-level courses of the Spanish Program at UNF. It specifically involves the design of immersive educational materials with a focus on Virtual Reality and reading accessibility. I approached the project from my specific interests in literature for young audiences and reading accessibility in the context of educational technology. Following Mayer’s Principles of Multimedia Learning, a theoretical framework that provides guiding design principles for the …

Diversity In Higher Education Administration: The Need For Student Perspectives, Drew Albritton, Aaron Leedy Apr 2021

Diversity In Higher Education Administration: The Need For Student Perspectives, Drew Albritton, Aaron Leedy

Showcase of Osprey Advancements in Research and Scholarship (SOARS)

Honorable Mention Winner

Diversity within higher education benefits students and institutions alike, creating a more relatable experience for students as well as a more beneficial work environment for faculty. While university student bodies are slowly beginning to represent the diversity in the communities which they serve, university faculty and staff have yet to catch up. This is especially the case with the administration at an institution’s highest levels. Eighty-three percent of college and university presidents are white (American Council on Education, 2017), and seventy-seven percent are male (Tarbutton, 2019). With an administration misaligned with its student body, students are at …

S.M.A.R.T Technologies For Students Who Are Deaf With Disabilities, Logan Silverman, Caroline Guardino

Showcase of Osprey Advancements in Research and Scholarship (SOARS)

In 2017, Drs. Guardino, Cannon and Mr. Logan Silverman presented the different types of technology that may assist professionals when working with students with disabilities. Last year, in November 2018, Dr. Guardino gave a keynote presentation at the Florida Educators of the Deaf and hard of hearing annual conference addressing the various strategies professionals use when serving students who are deaf with disabilities (i.e., autism, learning disabilities, attention deficit disorder). Within the presentation, a live poll was taken to ascertain and share the exact strategies used. Interestingly, many of the professionals responded to the poll by offering their use of …

What Is The Impact Of Positive Feedback On Student Academic Achievement?, Ashley Rader, David Hoppey

Showcase of Osprey Advancements in Research and Scholarship (SOARS)

This research project focused on how positive feedback affects student’s academic achievement. To begin, I researched different types of positive feedback, how to use it, and the outcomes of other studies focusing on the impact of using positive feedback. My study was done over the course of three months and four students who were struggling in math were selected to participate in a small group. While working with the students on math content standards I also intentionally embedded positive feedback into my lessons in several different ways. I would give feedback during instruction, for example saying, “great question” and “good …

The research detailed in this project surrounds the idea of relationships. Relationships are the basis of education in every aspect of the profession. In this scenario, a Professional Development School (PDS) partnered with a university to develop a mentor coach as well as teacher candidates. The PDS in question, Orange Park High School (OPHS), partnered with the University of North Florida (UNF) in order to train a new mentor coach while also training a teacher candidate and observing the impact it has on the Algebra I students of OPHS. The organization of this partnership was orchestrated by a Resident Clinical …

How Does Student Self-Efficacy Affect Achievement?, Meghan Taylor, Deborah Reed

Showcase of Osprey Advancements in Research and Scholarship (SOARS)

This presentation highlights the systematic integration of teacher inquiry within the undergraduate special education program at the University of North Florida. Inquiry is embedded across courses each semester and put into practice in a variety of ways in our PDS network. In all, inquiry serves as a tool for capturing student learning as candidates collaborate with mentor teachers to intervene and meet the needs of diverse learners. During the Fall 2019 semester, I implemented high leverage practices, collected and analyzed data of my students’ learning, and presented outcomes to my peers. By focusing on data-based decision making and designing instruction …
