A Dakota Cultural Intervention’S Influence On Native Students’ Sense Of Belonging: A Cbpr Case Study, Heather J. Peters, Teresa R. Peterson, The Dakota Wicoḣaƞ Community
Psychology Publications
This community-based participatory research case study demonstrates how Dakota Wicoḣaƞ utilized Indigenous and feminist epistemologies to create, implement, and evaluate a cultural intervention, the Mni Sota Makoce: Dakota Homelands Curriculum, to increase Native 6th- and 10th-grade social studies students’ peoplehood sense of belonging (Tachine et al., 2017). Findings demonstrate Native students liked the curriculum and reported an increase in support and a decrease in invalidation of their sense of belonging. While the curriculum provided a source of racial-ethnic socialization, some European American students criticized the curriculum, which likely negatively impacted 6th-grade students psychological sense of school membership (Goodenow, 1993). Results …

This presentation describes a strategy for the University of Minnesota system to use in the occurrence of another pandemic, written by students who experienced the pandemic during their education in both college and high school.
K-12 Education Fostering White Fragility, Ashley Johnson
K-12 Education Fostering White Fragility, Ashley Johnson
Undergraduate Research Symposium 2023
Scholars such as Carol Anderson (2017) and Joe Feagin (1994; 2006) have written extensively about the prevalence of white rage and systemic racism in contemporary society. We are seeing this played out in real time with Florida Governor De Santis trying to enact legislation to remove discussions of African American history and block dialogues about racism in schools. Robin DiAngelo (2019) explains “white fragility” as blaming “others with less social power for their discomfort” (109). DiAngelo and others have asserted that efforts, such as that of Governor De Santis, reinforce white fragility in schools. Specifically, curricula and instructional materials that …
Approaches To Broadening Participation With Ap Computer Science Principles, Audrey Le Meur
Approaches To Broadening Participation With Ap Computer Science Principles, Audrey Le Meur
Scholarly Horizons: University of Minnesota, Morris Undergraduate Journal
The Advanced Placement Computer Science Principles (AP CSP) course framework was created with the intention of broadening participation in computing. Research has produced mixed results on whether or not the framework succeeds in that goal. Given that teachers have significant freedom in how they choose to teach the AP CSP content, students can have a variety of experiences that may or may not impact their continued participation in CS. In this paper, I compare four different approaches to the AP CSP framework by examining their impact on AP exam scores, self-efficacy and confidence, belongingness and identity, and persistence and interest, …
Successes And Shortfalls: A Comparison Of German And American Environmental Education, Sophie Wieland
Successes And Shortfalls: A Comparison Of German And American Environmental Education, Sophie Wieland
Scholarly Horizons: University of Minnesota, Morris Undergraduate Journal
Germany and the United States have very different national policies related to climate change mitigation and adaptation, a reflection of starkly different public views on climate change. Public opinions on the environment have many influences, with primary and secondary public education being a factor in the development of environmentally friendly opinions and behaviors. The differences in each country’s approach to the environment, overall methods of environmental education, and continuing problems in climate education are investigated here through a literature search. Both Germany and the US have education systems centered on regional control, and slow change of educational standards plagues both …

Participatory simulations usually aim to bring simulations off screen into a shared physical space with people acting as agents in the simulation. In this paper, we describe considerations and design decisions related to creating a participatory simulation for use in learning settings with restrictions imposed due to the COVID-19 pandemic where typical classroom interactions were no longer allowed. We describe how our design decisions might help children both “dive in” and “step out” to understand more about pollinators and the prairie in spite of various restrictions on how exactly they can interact with each other. Our simulation, Buzz About, uses …
Teaching World Languages With And For Social Justice, Max Kivi
Teaching World Languages With And For Social Justice, Max Kivi
Undergraduate Research Symposium 2021
Language learning does not occur in a political, social, cultural, or historical vacuum. To learn a foreign language is to learn another way to see the world and to gain a glimpse into another’s perspectives, history, and culture. Since their inception within the United States, far too many world language programs have not strayed from teaching vocabulary, grammar, and stagnant interpretations of culture due to a perceived lack of space in the curriculum or low linguistic abilities of their students. In the last two decades, multiple world language educators and scholars (e.g., Johnson & Randolph, 2017; Glynn, Wesley & Wassell, …

Communication, Media, and Rhetoric Publications
For several years, we have conducted blended discussions and collaborative student activities in our media studies courses at the University of Minnesota Morris (USA) and Vidzeme University of Applied Sciences (Latvia). When the COVID-19 pandemic and subsequent ‘stay at home orders’ changed the ways we could teach, like other faculty throughout the world, we kept our instructional goals and pivoted from an occasional hybrid to a completely online/remote teaching practice. We made the choice to keep the blending of our students as a core component of our curricula, and added several opportunities for students to reflect upon their perceptions and …

Dungeon Classroom Guide: Using Tabletop Role-Playing Games In The Classroom, Gannon Youakim
Dungeon Classroom Guide: Using Tabletop Role-Playing Games In The Classroom, Gannon Youakim
Honors Capstone Projects
I’m writing this booklet to show educators why tabletop role-playing games are a useful academic tool.
I have loved teaching and tabletop role-playing games for a long time. I firmly believe they are both magical. As I’ve learned and experienced more of teaching and role-playing, I’ve come to discover their synergies. The goal of a classroom is to gather minds and learn through experience. The goal of a tabletop role-playing games is to gather minds and learn through experience. At first glance, the types of learning associated between the two don't seem to synchronize. Classrooms are formal; games are informal. …

Action, Experience, And Responsibility: Using I And We In High School Writing, Corinne Mccumber
Undergraduate Research Symposium 2018
In the field of composition studies, scholars often explore and debate how educators should train students to use the general forms of academic writing. Of particular interest, a trend has emerged in high schools where students are banned from using the words “I,” “me,” “we,” and “us” to avoid sounding subjective--even though composition studies scholars consistently employ these first-person pronouns for rhetorical effect. In this presentation, I closely examine how scholars use first-person pronouns in award-winning works. In particular, I show how scholars employ “I” and “we” to introduce personal examples, to call readers to action, and to reassert responsibility …

From Awareness To Action: Teacher Attitude And Implementation Of Lgbt-Inclusive Curriculum In The English Language Arts Classroom, Michelle L. Page
Education Publications
This survey research describes English language arts teachers’ comfort levels in integrating literature with lesbian, gay, bisexual, or transgender (LGBT) themes or characters into their curricula and classroom practices. Significant relationships were found between teachers’ age, comfort, awareness of resources, and implementation levels. Although younger teachers had higher comfort levels with LGBT texts, they displayed lower resource awareness levels and static implementation rates. In addition, comfort, awareness, and implementation of LGBT curriculum materials were also correlated with teacher location and with strength of religious belief, with rural teachers and strongly religious teachers displaying lower comfort and implementation levels. Inclusivity: Universal Design Strategies For The Online Classroom, Sarah Keene, Amy Limbybliw
Innovate! Teaching with Technology Conference
The importance of inclusivity work is backed by the Association of American Colleges & Universities, who in 2005 charged higher education institutions to work toward "inclusive excellence" by promoting a positive campus climate, establishing diversity as a core component in achieving desired student learning outcomes, linking diversity with quality, and rethinking and modifying pedagogy to reflect and support goals for inclusion and excellence (Williams, Berger, & McClendon, 2005). In addition, research conducted at higher education institutions have demonstrated that the extent to which students felt their institution had a nondiscriminatory environment positively impacted students' openness to diversity and taking on …

Feeling Real: Social Presence Within Online Discussion Forums, Maggie Struck, Trish Harvey, Karen Moroz, Jennifer Carlson
Innovate! Teaching with Technology Conference
Research on effective online teaching indicates that social presence enhances learning in an online environment (Bolliger & Inan, 2012). Social presence connects students to the instructor and to one another and influences the online learning experience and perceptions of learning (Bibeau, 2001). By establishing social presence of the individual and honoring the social and historical experiences of the collective; a richer, more engaging learning community can be formed. However, social presence is not easily attained in online learning environments. Rethinking the discussion forums within the online learning environment is a possible strategy for increasing social presence. In this session, presenters …

Reusable, Relevant, Recordings: Creating Engaging & Evergreen Course Content, Susan Tade, Nima Salehi
Innovate! Teaching with Technology Conference
Research indicates that recorded course content that is shorter and more informal in both style and media format has the greatest impact on student engagement. Recording key concepts, facts, processes, principles, and/or procedures that are core to the curriculum can fully leverage reusable, relevant recordings. This session will provide a design framework for creating recordings that are granular and modular which allows you to repurpose recordings in multiple contexts. This makes the content not only reusable and evergreen but creates a recording process that is sustainable and scalable.

Proctoring Exams In The Online Environment, Chlene Anderson, Pamela Gades
Innovate! Teaching with Technology Conference
The University of Minnesota, Morris Online Learning program has a history of using proctors for off-campus online students taking paper and pencil or computer-based exams. These methods require coordination between the student, proctor, instructor, and the online learning coordinator. The program must verify proctors identified by students, safely distribute exams to proctors and instructors, and follow protocols for the occasional late or lost exam. Recently the program piloted a remote proctoring system that allows students the flexibility to test at a time and location convenient for them while maintaining the integrity of online exams by authenticating students and deterring cheating. …

The experiences of passively watching a video online and actively engaging in a lecture in person are markedly different. During an on-campus lecture, an instructor has the ability to pose questions to students and give individualized feedback based on responses. In an online environment, however, these questions are at best rhetorical, and students' ability to receive feedback on their responses is limited. As a result, students are unable to check their understanding of a topic while watching a video. Similarly, non-classroom environments may prove to be more distracting for students, and the resulting potential decrease in engagement may be detrimental …
