Focused on communication departments in higher education, this article considers Theory Z as a framework for administrative management during periods of limited resources. It describes Theory Z as an approach grounded in participatory decision making, egalitarian relationships, delegation, shared philosophy, and attention to human resources. The discussion links these principles to communication administration by emphasizing consensus, quality circles, departmental self study, consumer definitions of program quality, and long range planning. Concern over career opportunities for speech communication majors frames this survey of departmental practices for preparing and marketing undergraduate students. Addressing interdisciplinary cooperation in communication education, this article discusses obstacles and practical possibilities for linking speech communication instruction with English composition. It situates the issue within departmental traditions, curricular authority, faculty appointments, enrollment pressures, and earlier efforts to connect communication with other fields. The discussion then describes a local arrangement in which fundamentals of speech communication and English composition were scheduled in consecutive hours, required simultaneous registration, and coordinated assignments without changing course listings, faculty loads, or formal departmental structures. Recruiting Communication Majors: Tools Used By Selected College And University Departments Of Communication, Claudia L. Hale, Dennis E. Warnemunde

Using survey responses from non-doctoral speech communication departments, this article examines departmental involvement in recruiting undergraduate and graduate communication majors. It situates recruitment within declining enrollments, changing labor markets, and concerns about how marketing may shape academic identity. The study asks whether departments are actively involved in recruitment and which tools they use. Findings suggest that many departments reported stable or increasing enrollments, often connected to mass communication offerings, flexible curricula, career orientation, and departmental reputation. Common recruitment tools included mailers, high school visits, phone contacts, forensic programs, advising, and advertising. The article emphasizes that departments should participate directly in …

Amid reductions in federal and state support, this report describes a communication department strategy for expanding graduate assistantship funding through campus and community partnerships. The department solicited nonprofit organizations, selected businesses, and university units with communication related needs, offering graduate students’ assistance with public relations, speeches, news releases, photography, brochures, newsletters, and related tasks.
