Umaine Names Valedictorians And Salutatorian, Joe Carr

Four valedictorians and one salutatorian represented the University of Maine Class of 2001 in the 198th Commencement. Valedictorians included Kristi Carver of Beals Island, Maine, a landscape horticulture major; Scott Cookson of Glenburn, Maine, an engineering physics major; Jill Fuller of Dixfield, Maine, a communication sciences and disorders major; and Gerti Pellumbia of Tirana, Albania, a business administration major. Rebecca Rozario of Bangor, a mathematics major, earned the title of Salutatorian.

The Black Bears will go forth without offensive force and 2000 America East Player of the Year Sara Jewett, who graduated after a stellar four-year career. Though it’s impossible to replace a player of Jewett’s caliber, Coach Smith expects better offensive production throughout the lineup to make up for the loss.

The Maine Writing Project will hold its summer professional development program in southern Maine to reach and accommodate educators in different areas of the state. This summer's institute in Cumberland represents the first time the intensive program for exemplary Maine teachers has been conducted away from the University of Maine campus. "As Maine's official National Writing Project site, we have a mission to serve the entire state" said Maine Writing Project founder and director Jeffrey Wilhelm, associate professor of literacy at UMaine. "We want to offer programs to as many people as possible."
