The University of Maine at Fort Kent was founded on February 21, 1878 as the Madawaska Training School under the supervision of Vetal Cyr. In 1955 the name was changed to Fort Kent Normal School. The name would change three more times, beginning in 1961 to become Fort Kent State Teachers College and then Fort Kent State College. The institution changed its name to the University of Maine at Fort Kent in 1970 and is part of the University of Maine System.

The 102nd Maine Legislature in 1965 established the University of Maine at Augusta (UMA) as a community-based institution offering associate degrees under the auspices of the University of Maine at Orono. UMA offered courses in the arts, general studies, liberal studies, administration, data processing, criminal justice, and nursing. In 1971, soon after moving to its present location in Augusta, UMA became an autonomous institution, the seventh campus of the University of Maine System.

The University of Maine at Brunswick Campus was located at the Naval Air Station in Brunswick, Maine. The Campus was established as an annex to accommodate an increasing number of University of Maine students who the Orono campus struggled to support. In 1946, the Class of 1950 became the first class to use the Campus, with all the students war veterans. In 1949, the Campus closed.

Edmund MacMillan "Ned" Sheppard was born in New Rochelle, New York in 1933. He earned his B.S.E.E. in 1956 at the University of Miami, S.M.E.E. in 1958 at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, and Ph.D. in 1962 at Purdue University. He taught at M.I.T. and Purdue before becoming a professor at the University of Maine teaching electrical engineering in 1962. While at the UMaine Sheppard served as the faculty representative to the University of Maine Board of Trustees. Sheppard retired from UMaine in 1997 and died in 2016 at the age of 82.

The Office later merged with the Instructional Systems Center becoming the Office of Innovation & Communications & Instructional Technology. The Office had a broad charge to assist in the planning and introduction of new technologies both on campus and throughout the state including those that would support instruction and presentations. The Abenaki Experimental College was an open educational center serving people in the Bangor, Orono, and Old Town Community. The College offered course on a range of traditional and non-traditional subjects such as folk dancing and basket making. The College was an approved University of Maine student organization and students and faculty as well as community members were involved in its establishment and administration. University of Maine student Roy Krantz was one of the key organizers in the College's establishment.
