He served as professor of Bacteriology & Veterinary Science at the University of Maine from 1889-1932. The Bureau of Labor Education (BLE) at the University of Maine is a state-funded department of research and advocacy for Maine laborers and their issues. First established in 1966 by the Maine Legislature, the original aim of the Bureau was to foster education about the history and current issues of labor in today's techno-capitalist society, as well as advocate on behalf of labor. The Nelson B. Jones Stein Collection is on display in the Oakes Room at Raymond H. Fogler Library. The theme of steins is inspired by the popularity of the Maine Stein song made famous by the singer Rudy Vallee.

In May of 1962, the Governing Board of the Memorial Union, with the urging of Nelson B. Jones, the first director of the Memorial Union, formally authorized the creation of the permanent stein collection, which in 1977 was renamed the Nelson B. Jones Stein Collection. The collection was originally housed in the Memorial Union before being relocated to Fogler Library.

Both wars had a strong effect on the university and its students; the desire to honor those who had served and to memorialize those who had died led to various activities on campus. James Norris Hart was dean emeritus of the University of Maine and professor emeritus of mathematics and astronomy. He was born in Willimantic, Maine, in 1861 and died in 1959. He received a B.C.E. degree from the Maine State College in 1885 and a C.E. in 1890. In 1897 he earned a M.S. degree from the University of Chicago.

Hart was an instructor in mathematics at the University of Maine starting in 1887 and dean of the University in 1903. Hart was awarded for his service to the University of Maine with a degree of doctor of science in 1908. …

The University of Maine Honors Program began in 1935 and transitioned into the Honors College in 2002. In 2002, the Honors College relocated from the original Robert Thomson Honors Center, constructed in 1975, to the newly renovated Center on the first floor of Colvin Hall. The Center had been named in honor of Robert B. Thomson in 1983. Thomson was the director of the Honors Program from 1962-1977. Following a pilot project in Aroostook County, Maine in 1992, the Maine Center for Student Journalism was established in 1993 to stimulate and assist the study and practice of journalism in Maine secondary schools. The Center provided students with an opportunity to work with, speak to, and learn from professionals in the field of journalism. The Center hosted an annual student journalism conference and regional roundtables that supported high school teachers and students journalism projects. The Center also organized an annual statewide newspaper conference and published a quarterly newsletter.

Cecil John Reynolds (1903-1998) was born in Chelsea, Massachusetts. In 1927, he won a Rhodes Scholarship to attend Oxford University where he earned Bachelor of Arts and Literature degrees in 1930. In 1935, Reynolds began teaching at the University of Maine and in the 1940s, founded an English honors program.

This collection contains textual information created and curated by Reynolds including copies of his autobiography and various essays, manuscripts, and lecture notes.. Holdings include photographs of Reynolds.

Marie Christiansen Mengers was born in 1905 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania and died in Orono, Maine. She was a professor of French at the University of Maine from 1947 until her death in 1965. Mengers was educated at the University of Nebraska, Wellesley College, Columbia University, and the University of Toulouse, France. She attended summer sessions at Harvard and Chicago Universities. Her doctoral dissertation was on the life of French symbolist poet Henri de Régnier. The purpose of Maine Day has evolved over time and in 1973 became a day for students, faculty, and staff to participate in general community service projects.
